Hiking Mishap

Hi! My trail name is Mishap. I really like hiking long distances and uploading dumb videos about my trips.
CDT 2022 Day 163
I decide to take the Ghost Ranch Alternative. I was able to make it for dinner and pig out on the buffet there. I encountered some of the most slippery clay based mud yet and struggled with the build up on my shoes due to the recent rains. At the end of the day a huge thunderstorm came and the canyon flooded. I ended up finding a spot to camp on higher ground next to the trail. It was far from a stealth site but it was safe.

Elk galore! I saw sooo many elk in this section heading northbound towards Ghost Ranch.

Sprinkes gets me to Cuba, NM and I head northbound towards Chama! I get off trail multiple times and am visited by a large herd of elk in the middle of the night while I'm cowboy camping. I was a bit nervous about potentially getting trampled.

Whitney and 5th Course were kind enough to drive me to Calgary on their way home. I spend the night at a hostel there and the next day catch a flight to Albuquerque, NM where trail angels, Big Bacon and Sprinkles, picked me up from the airport and hosted me for a night while I prepared for my last section of trail.

I hike north with 5th course and we make it to the boarder! So many emotions spinning through me, it was such a beautiful day despite the smoke too. We both successfully cross into Canada and clear our crossing over the phone eventually. We hike into Waterton Park and get some chores done while waiting for 5th Courses partner, Whitney, to arrive. I cross paths with Atlas and Ducky and we continue north toward the border together. We get insane views along the way.

A cruisy 15 mile day into Many Glacier with stunning views. I really lucked out by getting to watch a moose with a calf grazing aquatic vegetation together. The calf came out of the water and towards us. They seem pretty used to people being so close to a tourist spot. I was able to square away my permission to enter Canada by foot forms bypassing customs while at Many Glacier.

The views and wildlife blew me away on this day. 5th Course and I end up hiking the last section of trail together. We started on the same day together, I saw him for about a week or two then we didn't cross paths again until East Glacier.

It was hard saying goodbye to everyone in East Glacier Village but I headed off for the last section of trail heading toward the northern terminus.

I take a zero at Luna's Hiker Hostel resting up and indulging on the breakfast buffet at the hotel. The following day I secured my permits for Glacier National Park then slack packed the 15 miles back to the hostel. The temperature dropped a lot from the past few weeks, it's definitely fall now. I decide to hitch into town early to meet up with friends. Allowing me to slack pack the next 15 miles, not that my pack really weighed anything but being wet and cold wasn't all too appealing if I could avoid it.

As I continue hiking north more and more smoke blows in. I'm not sure where from but it wasn't great on my lungs.

After a long hot day hiking alone with clear signs of bears in the area, both black and grizzly. I set up camp at dusk and make dinner on the other side of the lake only to come back to another hiker cooking dinner next to my tent, then hiking on leaving me to camp alone next to foos smell. This still pisses me off to this day.

I hike along the Chinese Wall in the Bob Marshall Wilderness. My old foot injury decided to show up again but I work through it.

Gluten Puff takes me into Augusta, MT and I stay at Frank's place with Man Hands and Apples making it another zero day.
Land coral seems like a great name for those.
Those elk make some curious sounds.

Spectacular even with the smoke, same this year with cold thunderstorms occasionally clearing the air. I live in brown bear country and don't fear them but I'll never be caught that close to moose.
Triple Divide area looks cool.

Glad you had fun with you quest Mishap. Sorry i was not able to be a Montana host to you but i did give several CDT hikers a rise into town. My daughter keeps telling me picking up hitchers is dangerous but i keep telling her CDT hikers are safe.

That was not very nice thru hiker etiquette, him eating at your tent area.

The Wall trail is spectacular and the elk a bonus.
Man Hands and Apples! I think I last saw them walking the road north of that ranch 10 miles north of Pie Town where the nice owners let us camp for the night. Looking forward to your next section -> I thought there was much more bear sign north of the Chinese Wall.

@@lenoredisman3192 Far out mainly. I use Avenza for off trail stuff.
The bridge didn't look like benchmark, must still be south of there. Exciting country coming up. Hike on Mishap.

And thats the biggest city park on fire.
No not lighting. Those are burn piles from some logging activities or fuel reduction. When I lived in Helena, I was told Mt Helena on the side of town is the largest city park in the nation. Hike on Mishap.
My home valley when I was a lad. Favorite sections coming up in the Bob then Glacier. Hike on Mishap.

I also live and hike within a large bear population including grizzly. I agree black bears always just run, however, I give the brown bears plenty of warning that I'm coming thru and never ever sleep with any food scents near me. Nice video Mishap.
Yeah, I'm originally from Butte and most hikers skip that loop.

Stolen by USPS. Happened to me witb electronic equipment. He had me.write down and then refused.to check. In the end nobody from USPS believed me. Guy temp and gone. Small one person office.
