Blue Heron Hill
United States
เข้าร่วมเมื่อ 22 ส.ค. 2012
Welcome to Blue Heron Hill, we sit atop a hill over looking a small bay off of Lake Ontario, New York State. With only shy of 3 acres, we are trying to squeeze in as much as we can in a sustainable way. We recently acquired 8 more acres just down the road from our main property with plans to add more garden space and areas for new animals to roam. Join us in our successes and stumbles, it's always a learning process... Summers here for the kiddos are filled with gardening, art, cooking, chickens, science, reading, swimming, and boating.
The mission of my channel has since evolved over the last few years is to disseminating gardening, cooking and animal care information to anyone who has an interest. Come and join us as we become sustainable stewards of our land leaving it in better condition than what we found it.

How long do you think this keeps in the refrigerator? I have so many sugar rush peach peppers this year!
@@crystalharrison3476 I had a bottle in the frig for 6 months , this year I am freezing the peppers and making small batches throughout the year. The taste is just as good. You can try and freeze the hot sauce and see how that hold up, it may be just fine that way too. These peppers are very prolific!
Really wonderful 😊❤
Great recipe, TY 😊
These recipes look like something I would use often. Thank you for sharing them.
I’m going to try this recipe. I have a generic recipe but yours sounds more flavorful. I’m working on cleaning the garden too. I too have a Cherry tomato that is producing. We have had a freeze but unusually warm now. Have a great day.
Still no frost or freeze here! I just cut my pepper plants down and they are growing again even a few flowers. I love to see nature pushing forward despite what is coming.
@ I know what you’re talking about. I have tiny basil and tomato plants all around where the plants once were.
Yummm!! Nadapenos
Your soup looks delicious. Thank you for sharing your recipe.
I enjoy your gardening channel, it's always interesting to see how other people do things, awesome home made soup.
Wht fertilizer did u use?
I used a fertilizer high in Phosphorus (no brand name). Or use bone meal, fish meal. that will promote root developments.
WE USED TO SEPERATE HENS DURING THEIR MOLY DELOUSE THEM AND OUGGT A VITAMIN ENHANCED FEED. Yes, the ladies are all getting special attention during this stressful time.
I hope they get their feathers soon.❤
hello again! After talking to you last season, I decided to try growing hard neck garlic this year along with my soft neck that I grow every year. We don’t have cold winters in the PNW (30”s maybe high 20’s ) so I’m not sure if the hard neck will do very well here. The large cloves would be a real bonus for me and I’m excited to try growing it. Thanks for another great video.
Good luck! To me the added bonus of garlic scapes keeps me growing the hard necked variety.
If you have a short growing season, you will need to start them indoors for two months or more prior. And the leaves are still green so they were still growing. Also, I don’t know if you dug up the entire bed or not because they could be deeper.
These slips were extras and as an afterthought I found space and put them in. So I guess I shouldn't have expected they would have had enough time. I did dig the entire bed. As sweet potatoes grow, the tubers form of the central slip first and I didn't find them at that location. Live and learn, right? Did you grow them this year? How did your crop do?
Thanks for the good information on planting garlic. For reasons I don’t understand my garlic was almost dedicated when I pulled it this year. Fortunately a local Greenhouse has garlic into November. Have a great weekend.
Sorry for your garlic crop. I've never had that problem but we try try try again.
It is my first time on your channel and I have just subscribed. Thank you so much for sharing. Keep up the good work. All the best on this journey.
Welcome to BlueHeronHill!
Good harvest. I really enjoyed watching you. Enjoy your blessings.
Bummer! Your tubs did so well I would have thought the bed would do well too! I planted slips in ground here in Oregon about the same time, so I hope it wasn't too late here too. Last year we got about 35 lbs of sweet potatoes from the same bed, but I'm trying something new this year to enhance the yield, as most of the potatoes were little fingerlings. This time, I arched some pvc pipes over the bed and clamped on some fabric row cover over it after planting. It has held in a lot more heat during the early and late shoulders of our growing season when temps are cooler. Right after planting, I measured triple digit temps in it when it was only 70 outside. Right now with so much foliage inside, I don't see quite as much of a difference but we're still getting about 10° warmer when its sunny. About a month ago we were able to scavenge a couple pounds of early roots from the edge of the bed, so hopefully that was a sign of what could be coming. Anyway, maybe you could try tenting your bed like this to get the spot a bit more warmth?
That is a good idea that I may try next year. I am revamping some of my inground area for next year and converting to raised beds but will still have some areas to use in ground. Congrats on last years harvest, hoping this years will surpass that. Let me know how this years harvest does.
I was surprised… the vines are so beautiful, I thought you’d have a big harvest. I wonder about the shade from your trees. Sometimes it just doesn’t make sense. I’m happy for you either way your containers and the outcomes.
Thanks, Emily. How's your garden this time of year?
@@blueheronhill My garden is just about done. I have a few yellow beets, lettuce, radishes, cucumbers, and potatoes. All very small amounts. I do have the sweet potatoes in a grow bag. I had surgery around my eyes and am restricted as to weight of what I can lift. I hope the sweet potatoes can hang in there.😊
@@Grammysgarden Sad when our gardens decline. Rest and recuperate, I’ve been thinking about you.
@@blueheronhill thank you, I’m doing well.
I had that happen to me 3 years ago, and if you had 2 more months they maybe a little bigger but I also live above the 45th Parallel and just a 3.5 months of Summer. What I did was add a lot of sand and mixed it with a 10-10-10 and bone meal. I also added a very big bag pr perlite. This mix really helped me grow beautiful sweet potatoes like the ones you grow in your tubs . What I believe happens is your soil without sand gets compacted very fast in the spring and dries up and the roots cannot grow down. I have watched your videos for awhile now and I really like the advice you give. You have a very nice garden
@@jameswilkerson2392 Thank you for your thoughts and ideas. Maybe the soil needed to be less compacted , sand or perlite is always an option because I don’t have clay soil. I did add a 5-10-5 and bone meal but really I think I needed more of a growing season for these slips. Stay tuned for a big transformation of this particular garden area as I ready it for the 2025 growing season.
Too bad - the vines certainly look healthy. Beautiful garden minus sweet potatoes 🍠
Great harvest!
What a fantastic harvest, can't wait to harvest mine.. thanks for sharing.
A very interesting video. I have not seen sweet potatoes rot in the ground like the ones you showed. Also the fact the other two bins were ok is pretty conclusive, something unique in that bin. I must say you have a nice harvest despite the one bin. I’m anxious for your in ground harvest.😊
Always something new to figure out. Yes a good harvest despite the one bin!
Hi, new subscriber here! Nice harvest! I just harvested my sweet potatoes, first time growing them I fared pretty well!
@@Offgridlee444 Thanks for joining me. Congratulations on growing one of the most awesome tubers in a veg garden. Stay tuned for my next harvest…
@@blueheronhill definitely, I am just finishing canning up my tomatoes as we speak!
The colors are beautiful. It’s so dry here in Missouri our trees are going straight to a yellow brown color.
As an upstate NY gardener (I am in southeast Madison County, zone 5b), I really enjoy watching vids from other NYS gardeners. We love our sweet potatoes as well--just harvested our entire crop, all 130+ pounds of gorgeous (mostly) tubers. Would have had more if the rodents had stayed away! Love your garden vids and your cooking/baking vids and tips. Happy gardening!
@@bobbethillhomestead Every year I cross my fingers that the voles don’t return to feast on my tubers. I hope that I have a good harvest too.
Hello, I enjoyed your sweet potato treasure hunt. You have some nice ones. Your dogs look very sweet. I will be waiting for your in ground sweet potatoes. Have a wonderful day.

Beautiful potatoes! I love watching potato harvest and your sweet potato videos were how I found your channel, well over a year ago. Have a good weekend.
Yes! Sweet Potatoes are next, when are you digging yours? Loved your harvest last year.
@@blueheronhill I keep looking at them, I only have a grow bag due to jars on the shelves from last year. I think they will be ready in two to three weeks.
@@Grammysgarden I’m eagerly awaiting sweet potatoes!
@@blueheronhill your reveals are very interesting. I like the way you show ways of growing in different places such as totes etc.
Hello Sue, Your dilemma is one I have had, just another variable. I admire your knowledge and also showing what others might be facing. It seems each year I have another challenge in mine. I think your idea of weed barrier and raised beds sounds good. Take care

loved seeing. Your haul! I grew North Georgia Candy Roasters this year. The deer kept eating the ends of the vines no matter what I did so I’m only going to end up with 5-6 but they are HUGE. I read they are so sweet and delicious I can’t wait to try one this winter. I don’t have a lot of room for winter vine squash either so I can’t plant it inside of the deer proof gardens we have. I love your varieties. So pretty. I don’t grow pie pumpkins. Instead I grow Cinderella pumpkins for pies. One pumpkin can weigh 25-30#’s but the meat is sweet and not dry or stringy at all. So I only need one for just the two of us. I like to be able to bake it all up at once and get it done and in the freezer. Thanks for the great tour. I love winter squashes. I just need more room and fewer deer. Ha!
@@trishsmith2811 I’m with you on the deer problem! We have lots of them around this property but so far they haven’t found the squash patch, probably next year. I did think of the Cinderella pumpkins, I’ll try those next year too. And the Candy Roasters are new to me, I’ll make space for those too, thanks for your suggestions.
you might try sweat meat an old northwest squash variety.
@@MartinAxford-d9y I will look it up and maybe add it to my new varieties to try, thanks for the tip!
In Cameroon like most parts of Africa, we only consume the leaves and tender terms. I have never known that they consume the fruits
The fruits are not very tasty, that's why they need to be cooked plus added sugar.
Your tomatoes are beautiful, I am glad yours have done so well.
Thanks for sharing that recipe with the processor. I am thinking of quite a few things I can add that mixture to!
Hi Sue, thank you for the tips. I always learn something from you.
That looks beautiful
Im growing these now. Im excited to give these a try in either pie or jam. I have alkaline soil and haven't been able to successfully grow blueberries. Garden Huckleberries may be a perfect replacement.
Good luck with the process, I still have one packet of the processed berries from last year.
I’m sorry your basement flooded. You got so much done, that Sloopy Joe sauce looks great.
You are so good on camera. A natural. I've never heard of adding zinc. Have you done a side by side comparison on the color. Zinc vs. no zinc? I might have missed it getting coffee.
Side by side @4:20. There is a color difference! One on right is without zinc.
I learned from you today. I didn’t know about blanching the celery. Thank you 😊
Thanks for the tips 😊
I love it!!! I ADORE people that do this so that others can share in their bounty and get good, fresh, food instead of what is at the store.
Awesome ❤❤❤
I'm not aware of that, but it darn sure a good idea when your plagued with mater eating grasshoppers .
You're actually supposed to pick them the very minute they start changing color.
