The main problem this show was that he chugged a bottle of Wild Turkey before going on stange.
You're killing s Southern Belle...
Fuck.
Rest in peace buddy. Life is a cruel bitch.
Is he doing this in front of the pyramids
To be fair, his music isn't easy to play....but this is like watching a bird try to fly with broken wings....
No matter how fucked up you are"you don't play no pay"
This video is like a poem
Heartbreaking yet wonderful . I saw him around this time
Even if this was a rough show for him, the way he sings "maintain all them in" here at 0:53 is just stunning.
The way he delivers that "Not the name that you call me with" is just out of this world. The best performance of Biggest Lie just because of that moment, imo
What year was this
2001/02 I reckon
I felt like he was staring right at us.. Miss you elliott..
One of the best from this show
😂🤣
whats funny
Elliott was best with his full band.
We all know Elliott was an amazing guitar player and songwriter 💙
Dude forgot the lines on purpose. .real lost art
Oh man poor guy, this song is beautiful, the vulnerability i wish he could have healed his lack of self worth. Ive hit the bottom a bit myself, its crippling without self love you cant give properly. I can be so needy as a kid my boundaries felt out of place. I felt unsafe like i had to be someone i wasnt for my parents. They are lovely people i dont know why this happened now i feel so vulnerable to share feelings and emotions. And then they end up coming out the wrong way too intense delayed and broken. At the moment the only thing i find healing is music. I love people so much but cant show or express it to them in a healthy caring way.
man... this... THIS. I can see myself in every word you just wrote. I really hope Elliott is in a better place now. And i hope you take care of yourself aswell my friend
WOW...never heard someone describe my issues so well too.
He should have been playing with his full band.
heartbreaking. I don't know much about Elliott Smith, my introduction was "L.A.". but this is just heartbreaking...
Who are the mom and dad who downvoted this?
Elliott is 10 times more entertaining than any live performer, even when he's sloshed. WHen he says "that song is old" you can see immediately he's drunk by the gaze he gives. A very drunken gaze haha. Poor Elliott, I bet he wanted to go home so bad this whole set. He tries to get off near the end, early, and as he's walking off, Jennifer whispers something to him, probably told him the set wasn't done, a bit of encouragement maybe, and Elliott comes back, and stumbles through a few more to finish it off.
Looks like Val tho
*039 here, love runnin into you pal
@@j.b.8546 Haha so weird. Hope all is well. just getting ready to do a live downtown
Looks like Willie Nelson
That hair lol
pretty sure that was his intention :')
I cried watching him try to perform his own songs at this show. He looked so incredibly sad, lost, and fucked up. It is beyond painful and heartbreaking to watch. One of the saddest things I've witnessed.

i feel i should go away sometime,, far far away. See a live set, were he now stay. My favorite of all time. Love you Elliott
Did someone really say "you suck!" if so they're better off dead.
I saw this performance along with a couple hundred shocked fans at the Sunset street fair. I don’t remember him finishing a single song. Maybe he did. A girl next to me cried in disbelief. The audience instead of booing him off tried hard to be encouraging hoping he’d get it together. Most had walked away shaking their heads long before he gave up and left the stage... I had seen him in ‘99 at St. Andrews Hall in Detroit just before I moved to LA, and the difference in 2 years could not be believed.
Lol that girl pissed at the guy recording
:(
Fuck man he was wasted on that new york junkkkkk. Love ya elliott fly high man
Qué afortunado fuiste si estuviste en ese concierto
what was the year of this performance?
If you are a fan, this is amazing. Thanks for posting.
Pretty Mary K
Are they supposed to be the same melody but different lyrics? Sorry. Confused and actually comparing the two studio recordings now. Got sidetracked by this infamous live performance.
@@Iznessmaurer yes
@@Iznessmaurer yeah, different key too, but same progression
@@xxmyharturhandzxx Thank you 😊
This video must not have been uploaded, that's not like him. He was great most of the time, here he was just having a hard time, and we all know why. Too sad!!
Rest in peace Elliott Smith. Truly one of the best singer song writers of all time.
"Kill everyone? That's not my song" Idk if he was even joking but that was funny
"I'm too high in heroin I can't play" classic Elliott
Lol We'll be here all night The girl screamed Poor Elliott
hopefully that was meant in a positive way, like "we're not going anywhere anytime soon"
This whole show is the saddest concert I have ever seen (I wasn't there, but I watched the videos). Huge Elliott Smith fan and I hate to see how bad he was struggling at this time in his life. He did turn his life around for a little while though, and that must have been very hard to do so props to him. The fact the he came back with an album and toured after this is amazing. If you read some of his interviews, he really had a lot of problems after Figure 8, so I am impressed that he was able to return and offer such great music.
i wouldnt call it a bad performance, but not his best. go back to the xo tour and youll see the differene. ofourse this was the begininng of the end for the poor guy. spending $1,500 a day on crack and heroin will do it to you. Such a great talent. i really liked how they ccame out with new moon in 2007
despite his state, in my opinion his voice sounds amazing in the clips from this gig
We love you...... tears!
Actually, we are few...
What year is this from?
4 years late but 2002, not totally sure but I think this show is from early-mid 2002 during the height of his problems. He only played 3 shows that year :/
That girl at the end of the song is Valerie Deerin, Elliott's girlfriend at the time.
He should have stuck with her instead of going with Yoko Jr.
@@konundrum3678 i've heard some conflicting stories about valerie so i wouldn't be so quick to assume that she was much better...
She's Joanna Bolme.
@@michelebergamini5175 that's not Joanna. He and Joanna broke up in the late 90s; this was early 2000s. The woman in this video was Valerie Deerin.
"ITS THAT CAMCORDER IN YOUR FACE!" .... shit, cameraguy
@dhjenkins72 what? you never been a mess before?
I think it's them braids that's making you all cry
