Playing a pad gives more bounce , I find to play a snare to increase finger strength. Any feedback ? I played acoustic drums and I had Tama electronic on my floor toms. It seemed that my action on the floor toms was much faster
Great! Personally I’ve found it helpful to practise on different surfaces - practise pad, snare, floor Tom, and cymbals to get a good range of surfaces with different feels and rebound amounts. Hope this helps!
As a new drummer (about 4 months), this is great. I'm taking lessons, and this lesson in control has eluded me. Thank you from a new subscriber!
Thanks for watching! Glad you found it helpful, and best of luck on your drumming journey!
For a relatively small channel, the production/editing of this video is insanely good. Great info. Subbed.
Thanks for watching and subbing! Really appreciate that :)
I've been playing drums all my life. Since I was 2.5 years old. ive had shoulder surgery carpal tunnel surgery. I've always played big drum kits on gigs . I didn't know that I would damage my shoulders and arms playing I played metal music,
Hope all the injuries are healed now! Best wishes
The most concise well filmed and explained study on finger technique I've ever seen,, congratulations ,this really is outstanding . I have been practicing finger technique for about 12 months with limited results ,but I am sure this will make a huge difference . Finger technique really does require a lot of patience and dedicated practice , I'm glad you mentioned this ,as it can be very discouraging and frustrating to not realise how difficult it is to gain control . Thankyou very much 😂😂
Thank you for the very kind words! Really appreciate it! Thanks for watching and best of luck practising :)
@BetterDrumming your welcome ,also I've noticed that having dry skin can cause sticks to slip and a little hand cream helps .
@nickturnbull4105 Nice! Will have to give it a try!
Great video! Just a question. What do you think about moving your fulcrum to the middle finger rather than the index?... Thx so much
Great question! I tend to do this in German grip sometimes where I let the index fingers relax to the side of the stick (middle finger as the fulcrum), and in French grip when playing the jazz ride cymbal pattern, sometimes I relax the index finger slightly so the fulcrum is more the middle finger, but a lot of it is personal preference and whatever feels right for you :)
@@BetterDrumming yes, today I found that it's necessary to change fulcrum... index for singles and middle for doubles... feels comfy that way... thanks heaps man! keep up the good work
Sounds great! Glad that’s working for you :) thank you!
this is an awesome video with solid information. i have an additional tip if you struggle to activate your fingers outside of a french grip context: try the finger isolation exercises in this video with the fulcrum between the middle finger and the thumb. basically, try to gain control over the stick without using the index finger. i find that the angles and motions translate to a bunch of different settings where your grip is more lose/german
This is a great tip! Thanks for sharing :)
Very informative bro ...great job!!!
Thank you! Thanks for watching :)
I really like this because when you balance brushes on the rims of the floor or the snare, it is quite easy to knock them off. And if your floor tom is 14 inch and the stick is 15" then the sticks can easily roll off the floor tom.
Glad you found it helpful! Thanks for watching :)
A GOOD NOTE...would be to see you incorporate this technique on the Hihats and Tom's to see it being used...Hihat and Ride would probably be played More with this technique..😊
Great suggestion! Will keep this in mind for future videos :) Thanks for watching!
As a 100% left hander, I was taught to play drums right handed. Would love to play open handed, but at my age it would be like starting over. My right hand is much less cororinnated. Do you think with enough practice do you think I can match my right hand with my left?
@badhabits25 I am left handed too! Learned drums right handed. This is a topic I’m super interested about, I’ve dabbled playing open handed and would love to dive deeper into it, I think it’s definitely possible and would be interesting to see how quickly it is learned after playing right handed, might give it a go for a month and document my findings? 🤔
Outstanding video, loads of useful information in this. Very clear. Thanks for your hard work in putting this together and good luck with your channel. Subscribed.
Thank you very much for the kind words! Really appreciate the Sub! Thanks for watching :)
I've been learning for about 1 year now. I haven't started working on rudiments yet tho. Do you have a video on what to start on and a good way to progress in an order that makes sense? I've just been learning everything from TH-cam and I seem to jump around a lot rather than focusing on certain things.
Thanks for watching! This is a great idea for a video! I would definitely start with learning the 4 control strokes which are the one of the fundamental techniques for learning the rudiments! I have an older video named ‘4 drum strokes every drummer should know’ hopefully that can help you get started and I’ll look into making a follow up video soon! Best of luck on your drumming journey!
It's my dream to drum as well as you one day 🙏 ❤
Thanks for the kind words!
For me the worst issue is the angle, especially in American grip. I can barely do it 45 degrees, and that's with fulcrum on the middle finger (German grip in your video 30:00), slow, can get to 90 very slow. On index finger (American 30:30) getting to 45 degrees slow seems like an impossibility right now. I guess gotta stay on french grip, although not many uses on kit for me except ride.
Definitely takes some time getting used to each grip! I find I tend to use different grips depending on the style of music and what ideas I want to play.
Great vid bud, such a pro! 🤙
Thank you! Appreciate it :)
Thank you. Very informative.
Thanks for watching!
Wow ! I needed to hear that bit on the end . ( Don't forget to have fun) Been too focused on technical lately. Thanks for the reminder - great video 👏👏👏👍🏼
Glad you found it helpful! Thanks heaps for watching!
Love to see it.. I was a great youth drummer who everyone said I had to keep at it csuse inwas a prodigy.. got in a motorcycle wreck right after hs..and my hi hat and double bass foot was wrecked.. now I play drums and guitar for jst fun cause I'll never be the new hotness. Took alot out of me to have talent literally ripped off my body
Really sorry to hear that! Awesome you’re playing guitar and drums! Wishing you all the best with it :) thanks for watching!
Can't believe it took me this long to find this video! Easily the best tutorial for finger technique I've ever seen! So helpful, even for a long time drummer with stubborn muscle memory! Thank you!
@@joberman_pinch_ya786 Thank you for watching! I really appreciate the kind words :) have a great week!
The stick moves around so much in my hand causing my grip to end up to high on the stick. But when I try a tighter grip I don’t get as much rebound as I’d like. Any tips how to keep the index finger and thumb firmly in the position you want on the stick?
@@luke_kiid Keep experimenting tightening and loosening your grip, there should be a sweet spot where the stick shouldn’t move and you don’t hinder the rebound. Stay tuned, I’ve got a video coming out very soon discussing this problem!
@@BetterDrumming thanks a mil. :)
@@luke_kiidno problems! Thanks for watching :)
Digital? what's that? This is old skool ×analog× "Noise Gate", "DeTuner" + "EQ" at its finest 👌 my drummer back in the day, would have squares of folded rag taped to the tom heads + snare (definitely stops any unwanted ringing), and would either have a small blanket bunched up in the kick drum or if nothing else available he'd just throw his jacket in there (ours too!) ... great tips my friend. Cheers 😎💓🥁
@@sidmcmillan926 thanks for watching! These are some great ideas! I’ve definitely used the ‘throw a jacket’ trick before! Really appreciate the kind words and ideas. 😀🥁
As soon as you said "this exercise is good for finger control..." at 11:35 mark, my left hand dropped the stick on my head LOL
@@calvinpham5547 Completely normal! It takes some time to get used to, I have dropped the stick many times when working on this technique!
@@BetterDrumming Ha, I was like the hell?...Long way to go Calvin
@@calvinpham5547 you got this!
I have 3 questions: How long did it take you to get to this level of finger technique efficiently? What about using bigger sticks for this exercise or maybe turn the stick and practice the blunt end? Left hand stick is creeping, will it go away with after awhile? Thank you for your video tutorial
@@calvinpham5547 Thanks for your questions! I learned this technique years go, but if you’re consistent with practise you can definitely learn it in a few months! Bigger sticks can help as they are more forgiving, you can use them to help you get the feel for the technique, then use your normal sticks again. I haven’t tried using the blunt end before, I’ll have a go! Try slightly tightening the grip on your left hand to secure the stick from shifting! Hope this helps :)
@@BetterDrumming Thanks a lot bro. That's a quick reply. i am practicing at this moment right now 👍
@@calvinpham5547 No problem! Good luck with it! I’m currently making a follow up video talking about some of these issues! :)
The power of playing slow is real, I remember the first time my friend who plays the drums told me to play to a BPM of 30. Absolutely broke me hahah but has brought me a long way in terms of my quality. Not saying play at 30BPM, but practice and ace it slow and then progress. Thanks Ryan!
So true^ no problems, thanks for watching!
Do the fingers have to be in touch with the stick all the time?
When I play my fingers are in contact with the stick for roughly 90% of the motion, that last 10% or so is when the tip of the stick hits the drum head and for that small portion the bottom end of the stick loses contact with the fingers, then immediately bounces back to the fingers for the next stroke. Hope that helps!
Thanks 👍
Thanks for watching!

I appreciate the very kind feedback! Thanks for watching and subscribing!
Hey man at the beginning of the video you are in German grip and then you teach the technique in French grip for the rest of the vid. Is there any change in technique between German and French?
Great question! I find the movement to be similar between grips with German grip playing more into the palm of your hand and French grip playing more towards yourself/towards your body. Practising both grips with help the other! Hope this helps!
@@BetterDrummingthank you!

Hey man, i watched your finger technique video a year ago and got some time to get back into practicing drums now. I love your approach and im very happy to see you shifting towards more conceptual stuff aswell. What i wanted to know or what i have been wondering is, how to improve vocabulary and how to really get creative with it, as i find myself mainly using the same 5-10 stickeings whenever i approach a drum fill. Improvising whilst staying in the pocket is another big challenge for me. I know this might come late and ill definetely chekc out your videos. Just wanted to give you some ideas and wishes from an active audience member. :) Cheers for all your awesome content ! 💯
