Zen and Christian Parables
มุมมอง 495 ปีที่แล้ว
Zen is a complex pedagogical method for teaching how to be in the world. Zen parables (or Zen allegories) offer lessons or morals through simple stories which are intended to illustrate some truth to the audience. In order to understand how these parables function, create rhetorical triangles and analyze the relationship of the speaker's identity (ethos) with the audiences' emotional needs (pat...
Aristotle, The Art of Rhetoric, Book 1, Reading and Analysis
มุมมอง 13K6 ปีที่แล้ว
Aristotle (384-322BCE) was one of the great ancient Greek philosophers along with Socrates and Plato. A polymath of extraordinary genius, Aristotle was able to lay forth a method for analyzing and utilizing rhetoric that is still in use today, over 2300 years after his death. The thumbnail is a section of The School of Athens (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_School_of_Athens) by Raphael, 1509-1511. P...
Iliad, Book 9, Phoenix and Ajax Make Their Appeals (part 4 of 4)
มุมมอง 2536 ปีที่แล้ว
In the final portion of the Book 9 reading, Phoenix, Achilles old teacher, and Ajax, his reticent comrade in arms, make their appeals to Achilles to rejoin the battle and save the Achaean forces. Are they successful? Who is the most successful, and who is the least? Finally, keep in mind how Phoenix uses a parable, a rhetorical strategy that uses a simple story to illustrate a moral or lesson. ...
Iliad, Book 9, Odysseus' Offer and Achilles' Response (part 3 of 4)
มุมมอง 2106 ปีที่แล้ว
Odysseus is the most skillful tactician and orator in all of ancient Greek literature. In this video, we will see whether his gift of the gab is enough to convince the mighty (and mightily angry) Achilles to save the Greeks from the Trojan forces that will attack and kill all the Greek forces if he does not. Consider Achilles position as we read from lines 220-522 in Book 9 of the Iliad, as wel...

Iliad, Book 9, Introduction (Part 1 of 4)
มุมมอง 1906 ปีที่แล้ว
In this video, we will step back into the distant past, perhaps 4000 years ago, to the bardic traditions of Homer, great orator of the epic poem, the Iliad. Important to remember is that this was told in a complete different context, as a recited story, as writing was not used to record stories at this time. So the reading strategy will be to suspend your point of view as a 21st century listene...

Hello. I study Aristotle's work. Your presentation is THE BEST I have found so far. Great work, please go on. Aristotle is in high demand now because of his search for facts. Maybe if you package that material in some form then you will present us all with a great gift. And it will be a rewarding work for you too. Please, consider that.
