The story of the the blind man is given more detail in St Marks gospel, chapter 10. His name is Bartimaeus, and apparently he was famous in his day as a adult begger, likely he was badgering everyone who passed by daily, and thus why he was told to be quiet, he was just part of the landscape. But he persisted. Christ passing through this city of Jericho is type of how God becomes incarnate and walks literally through this “city of sin” as it was known in history, and brings humanity sight and salvation, we follow Christ on this road to our own salvation. We are blind Bartimaeus. We must ask ourselves if we know what we want Christ to do for us....

“Drink water from the spring where horses drink. The horse will never drink bad water. Lay your bed where the cat sleeps. Eat the fruit that has been touched by the worm. Boldly pick the mushroom on which the insects sit. Plant the tree where the mole digs. Build your house where the snake sits to warm itself. Dig your fountain where the birds hide from the heat. Go to sleep and wake up at the same time as the birds-you will reap all the days golden grains. Eat more green - you will have strong legs and a resilient heart, like the beings of the forest. Swim often and you will feel on the earth like the fish in the water. Look at the sky as often as possible and your thoughts will become light and clear. Be quiet a lot, speak little - and silence will come into your heart, and your spirit will be calm and full of grace.” -Saint Seraphim of Sarov
