Avery Burton - ISDTA Solo Guard 2019
มุมมอง 11K5 ปีที่แล้ว
This is my senior year color guard solo that I choreographed myself for the 2019 ISDTA (Iowa State Dance and Drill Team Association) State Solo Competition. The competition took place on November 2, 2018 and I placed fourth. The song is "The Sword and the Pen" by Regina Spektor.
I’m in the process of making my solo and I need you to know you are so incredible and amazing!!! I loved the part where you held the silk and kicked the flag with your foot and the spin around your neck as you slid!!!
Um ate !?!?!?!?!

This is just a lost of moves that look doable to me. 0:07 0:28 1:03 1:18
Holy crap congratulations
THAT WAS SO BEAUTIFUL
Thank you!
Wow! You've inspired me so much!
I love making rifle and flag choreo, but I cannot for the life of me do dance. 😂 That was beautiful.
@SpintronixGuard What is the trick at 0:50 called? I really want to learn it
I absolutely love this song and as soon as the music started I got so excited. you did not disappoint! this is beautiful. performances like these help me remember why I joined guard
I have a technical question. When making a toss is reaching for the pole mid toss normal?
It is "normal" (aka your body naturally wants to do it) - however it's a habit that many (if not most) instructors dislike. It's typically better to hold your "free arms" (whatever your arms are supposed to be under the toss) for as long as possible before moving at the LAST second to catch the pole. What I do now is count through the toss. (Let's say it's release on 1 catch on 4) I'd count it 5678 Out 2 3 & catch) On "&" you move from your free arm position to your catch position. Always follow whatever method your instructor says though.
The 7 people who disliked this are obviously blind. They can't tell amazing choreography if it hit them in the face
IM LOSING IT THIS IS ABSOLUTELY INSANE WHAT THE HECK, EVERYTHING IS SO FLUID
How do you get over your fear of preforming a solo in front of people
For me, I love performing and it's something I've done since I was little, so it doesn't make me that nervous anymore - the more you do it, the easier it gets. But everyone gets nervous from time to time, so these are some of the things I do to calm my nerves. Before I go on, I will do a visual run where I run through my routine in my head. This gets me in the mindset of "it's just me and my equipment" and sets me up for how I want the run to go. I also do a thing called box breathing. You breath in for 4 counts, hold for 4 counts, exhale for 4 counts, hold for 4 counts, and repeat. This helps me slow down my heart rate and center myself. When I'm on the floor, I try to look/perform to where the wall meets the ceiling or sometimes there's words or a logo or something on the wall above the bleachers. I look at/perform to these because it helps with projection, and it's right above everyone's heads, so I don't really see everyone in the stands. I don't have many of these, but it helps a lot of people I know to have a "pre-show ritual". This could be listening to a song, holding/tapping/rubbing a certain object, a mental pep-talk, anything that will help you center yourself and put you in a place of "it's just me and my equipment and I'm going out there to do something that I know I can do". Most importantly I think, is remembering that everyone in the audience wants you to do well. They're supporting you, cheering you on, ready to watch you do something you love. An audience can be scary, but remembering to breathe and have fun is what it's all about 💛
I had to preform my solo today and I only dropped twice
Me trying to learn the moves so I can impress people
where did you get that dress! Its absolutely stunning
Thank you! I think I found it at goodwill actually

Thank you!
Oh my word! I don't get notifications for this and didn't realize how much interaction this had gotten! Thank you so much everyone! Sorry for the VERY late responses, and even though it's late, hopefully some answers may still be relevant.
I believe so many ppl love this song and you killed this performance I love it and my wifi is crashing rn so I’m commenting while it loads so I can finish watching it 🥰🥰🥰🥰
Hello anyone know the flag kick toss name or know a tutorial
That's something I figured out how to do on my own. I hadn't/haven't seen anyone else do it (but that's not saying it hasn't been done by others). I used a 5 1/2 foot pole and it works the best. I've gotten it to work on a 6 foot pole, but it typically doesn't flow quite as smoothly. As long as you have your hands right, the flag does most of the work for you :) You can adjust the playback and slow it down to watch how my hands are placed. Rather than trying to kick the tip of the pole, I find it easier to kick the silk on top of the pole, but it's mainly trial and error :) Hope that helps, let me know if you have anymore questions :)
Perfect 😿👌♥️👑👑♥️♥️♥️
THIS IS AMAZING!! OMG THE EMOTION AND PASSION WITH THE ELEGANCE OF HER MOVEMENTS IS SO FLAWLESS THAT IT BROUGHT ME TO TEARS!!!!! 😭😍😍😍😍

This is one of the worst flag performances I have ever seen. Awkward, clunky, lacking any semblance of grace.
And you had to comment that becausee????
@@mariahfrancis8211 Because it needed to be said. It gives color guard a bad name.
@@tengod6458 you know there's WAYS to use words when your ADDRESSING something that's "wrong" it's ok to POINT OUT something that's it's lacking and you don't have to sugar coke anything BUT there's way to address thing if your wanting them to be BETTER you didn't even offer tips on how she could do certain things better or not your comment was still irrelevant
@@mariahfrancis8211 I wasn’t in the market for an English teacher, but perhaps you should be. The phrase is “to sugarcoat,” not “to sugar coke.”
Troll.
cool
This is the best solo choreography on flag I’ve ever seen wow
this was beautiful, amazing performance
You should have placed first!
What size is the flag? I can’t tell if it’s just me or if it looks like a five foot
My school spun 5 1/2
This inspired me to work even harder on my colorguard routines
I fell in love with all these tricks ❤️❤️ I love this preformance so much I would be so honored to learn it!
Breath-taking.... wow
That was beautiful. Your amazing
This gets me so hyped up for my senior winter season you're such an inspiration❤

This is amazing! I was wondering where you got this cut of the song?
Sorry for such a late reply, I didn't know there were so many comments! I cut the song myself
Aahhh this was so beautiful!!! Just out of curiosity, what did you place? :)

This is really good😍any tips for a 7th grader for tryouts?
Elaine Albright first, make sure you are aware of the hard work and dedication this activity requires. it would be awful for you to suffer doing a whole season of something you dread. after you know for a fact you want to audition for colorguard, maybe start doing basic workouts and stretched at home to get a head start. i, unfortunately, did not get a head start and was sore for several weeks after practice. if you are doing sports right now, you should be fine. you can find plenty of beginners stretches and basic workouts on youtube. make sure they are beginners, especially if you don't do physical activities that much, you don't want to injure yourself right before the season starts. next, know that you will struggle. its practically impossible to pick up a flag for the first time and toss it properly. usually the first thing you learn are drop spins, which will take some getting used to. just remember, Thumbs are down when the flag is down, Thumbs are facing up when the flag is up (if you have no idea what im talking about it will make sense later lol). do not be afraid to toss the flag. you will never catch the flag if you are always thinking of ways to drop it. its inevitable you will get hit a few times, but nothing major ever comes from it unless you're like, the hulk, or something. you do not want to be the girl who never lets go. a couple years ago we had a new girl who literally never let go of her flag or rifle, even at the end of the season, and it was really frustrating for everyone, especially the instructors. next, you will want to make sure you have proper workout attire, such as at least 2 or 3 pairs of athletic shorts(please for the love of god do not be the kid who wears jean shorts to practice). you will also want a few athletic t-shirts or tank tops, whichever you prefer. also invest in a good pair of tennis shoes, and break into them before practices start! you'll thank yourself later. also, converse, Vans, etc. are NOT athletic shoes, hopefully your instructor tells you guys that. and maybe even buy some cool new socks, and don't wear white socks if you're doing dance indoors, as they will get dirty very quickly from the probably unswept floor. you will also want a nice water bottle for practices and band camp. for regular practices, depending on the length of practice, just a standard sized water bottle should do it. usually the ones that keep your water cold are the best, nothing is better than cold water during a 30 second gush-n-go. for band camp, though, you will want at least a half gallon, if not a gallon jug, like the big ones you take hiking and stuff like that. if you have long hair, make sure to put t up into a ponytail, braid, bun, or whatever to keep it out of your face. if you wear glasses, you should buy one of those strap thingys that you attach to them to keep them secure so they don't fall off. (I have hit myself one too many times in the face and have knocked my glasses off a lot) sorry I have no idea what they're called. ALSP FOR THE LOVE OF GOD DO NOT FORGET SUNSCREEN AND SUNGLASSES FOR BAND CAMP ESPECIALLY IF YOURE PALE ONE TIME I DIDNT APPLY IT FOR A WHOLE DAY AND I GOT 1ST DEGREE BURNS. other than that, I can't really think of any thing else to inform you about. i hope this helps (it better bc I spent 20 minutes on it lol) and i hope you have a great season and i promise you will love it. tell me how auditions go!!!
Thank you, thank you, thank you! I really apprecitated this!!! and I'll make sure I tell you how tryouts went:)
Hey:) I’m back I had the flu the day of tryouts and I had to be out the entire week:( He said I could tryout next year, though.
Elaine Albright oh that's too bad, ive been sick a lot recently, as well. good luck at auditions!!!!!
Elaine Albright All I can say is you'll do great be yourself and be friends with the flag not enemy's ...trust me I learned the hard way😂
