June with Otto Preminger: Anatomy of a Murder
มุมมอง 10K3 ปีที่แล้ว
Nominated for seven Oscars, including Best Picture, Best Actor, and two Best Supporting Actors, Anatomy of a Murder was a huge box-office success and, in the words of Preminger biographer Foster Hirsch, "one of the great American movies" and "the most poised work" of Preminger's career. Jimmy Stewart plays a cagey small-town lawyer; Ben Gazzara is the volatile soldier who's accused of murder; L...
June with Otto Preminger: Bonjour Tristesse
มุมมอง 8K3 ปีที่แล้ว
Credited with funneling 19-year-old lead actress Jean Seberg directly into her iconic role in Jean-Luc Godard’s Breathless two years later, Preminger was here giving a second chance to the young Iowan actress who played his Joan of Arc in the ill-fated Saint Joan in 1957. Better suited to Bonjour Tristesse’s role of the spoiled rich girl Cécile, daughter of the enablingly rich Raymond (David Ni...

April Fulcis: Don't Torture a Duckling

Chronologically the first of the five Fulci films we’re presenting, Don’t Torture a Duckling has gained esteem when looking at Fulci’s career in total, and is often cited as his masterpiece. The film starts with an M-like jumping off point of a town plagued and made paranoid by a killer of children, this time specifically young boys. Chief among the suspects are a local witch and a rich city gi...

April Fulcis: The Beyond
มุมมอง 2183 ปีที่แล้ว
Second in the Gates of Hell trilogy and, alongside Zombie, one of the films most responsible for Fulci’s reputation, The Beyond is lifted by unusually strong production and sound design, used in the service of surrealist flourishes, more fun eye trauma and surprisingly vocal tarantulas. Here our gateway to hell comes in the form of the Seven Doors Hotel just outside of New Orleans, newly inheri...
April Fulcis: City of the Living Dead
มุมมอง 1443 ปีที่แล้ว
The first film of the Gates of Hell trilogy, City of the Living Dead opens with a priest committing suicide in a cemetery. This sacrilegious act results in the Gates of Hell being opened, at which point the plot hinges on whether a reporter and a psychic can get them closed before the dead rise on All Saints Day, just three days away. On the way to achieving this goal, our heroes encounter all ...
April Fulcis: Zombie
มุมมอง 1193 ปีที่แล้ว
Initially released in Italy as Zombi 2, an in-name-only sequel to George Romero’s Dawn of the Dead (released in Italy under the title Zombi), Zombie was an instrumental film in garnering Fulci international attention. Taking cues not just from Romero but also King Kong, Jaws, and others, Zombie retains its potency for a host of reasons, not least of which an instance of eye trauma rivaled by on...

Fassbinder February: Ali: Fear Eats the Soul
The film is the Broadway adaptation of the play which opened in 1943 and ran for 503 performances. Both the musical and the film are based on Georges Bizet's opera Carmen which opened in Paris in 1875. I have seen the opera and I have the film on D.V.D. The basic story is the same. Carmen in both the opera and the musical sings the opening song warning that she falls in love very hard but falls out of love, so beware. The cast is all African American because during that period 1940s and 1954 producers would cast an interracial cast. The lyrics for the songs were written by Oscar Hammerstein. Because the cast was African American he wrote the opening song Dat's Love instead of That's Love. I find the insulting, but it was done a lot during the 1940s with Show Boat [Can't help loving Dat man of mine] and Cabin in the Sky. In the opera the opening song [same melody] is L'amour est un oiseau rebelled "[Love is a rebellious bird"] In Carmen Jones, she falls in love and out of love with the soldier Joe. In the opera, she falls in love and out of love with Don Jose. In the film, Carmen wants to go to the club Louie Paster. In the Opera, it's just Paster.
Hi
This great presentation thank you for posting on TH-cam
Read: Style and Meaning: Studies in the Detailed Analysis of Film - Chapter 7 : Revisiting Preminger Bonjour Tristesse (2005 Manchester University Press)
In April 1957, famous French author / screenwriter Françoise Sagan, whose love of dangerous driving forms part of her life's legend, sustained severe head injuries when her Aston Martin DB2 crashed at high speed near Milly-La-Forêt in France. Sagan also drove a Gordini type 24, an AC Bristol and both a Jaguar XK120 and E-type sportscar.
A very enlightening and clear presentation. Thank you! I learned a lot about the film.
