I feel Radiology, not just MRI, is lacking awareness and respect from the community. If the community respects what we do/say then could develop MD's that respect Radiology protocols.

I have been a Radiology manager, MRI tech for over 25+ years, and most of that time I have simultaneously worked in the capacity of MRI safety officer. MRI safety is so complex and there are little things that you did not discuss that when combining The Joint Commission and ACR Guidance is so crucial. Many hospitals only rely on The Joint Commission and that alone is not enough. ACR can fill in the gaps to compliment The Joint Commision for MRI safety and operations. MRI workflow has to be so efficient and guarded with best practices in place. I too have given lectures and have learned a lot from one of the great pioneers in MRI safety. I did notice you emphasize heavily on The Joint Commission, but that's not enough for overall MRI Safety and training. MRI Safety Officer should come up with MRI safety policies and procedures and signed off by the medical director. MRI safety policies and procedures should not alone come from the medical director. The Joint Commission has documentation on MRI safety on hearing damage. When management sets time limits for MRI procedures can inherently increase MRI safety issues and should be reviewed by MRI safety officer and medical director and give feedback. Remember people, The Joint Commission is not the only source for MRI safety. MRI policies should include The Joint Commission, ACR, and best practices that may go above and beyond. I designed MRI suites from the ground up, policies, procedures, worked with MRI technologist, all the way through with approvals and got 100% with The Joint Commission and they even indicated they would like to use our sites as best practices. There are many things that were not discussed with MRI safety in your lecture that are very important where accidents really come from. Remember folks MRI Technologists are the gatekeepers to zone III and zone IV, and providers and other facility employees will challenge the rules, but MRI Technologist must not back down and speak up for the voiceless, the patient. One more thing: MRI safe crash carts does not mean they are safe, since there may have items within the crash cart that may not be safe.

When I got my first 3t mri I was like 15yrs old and know a lot about mri, I asked the tech if he had like a tennis ball with metal in it to show me the mri magnet strength, it flew in their and I pulled it out and it was crazy to see first hand that kind of power. I can only imagine watching a gurney or big item zooming in the magnet.
