First day i got there. I was told there was a bowling alley and swimming pool. And looked like a complete idiot when I asked other people about it. Pretty much straight out of boot camp I was when I got there.
What a ride! I was aboardvin 86-90. We made the transfer around the Horn of South America. More than 12' seas there. We were part submarine. No flight quarters.
Craig Moritz I can’t imagine you and I didn’t cross paths once or twice. I came aboard in 86 (Philly shipyard) and discharged in 90 at Coronado Island (or North Island). Air Dept., waist cats. Last I heard Buzz Needham was selling real estate.
Ken McClary 1963 t0 1965 Narm war. She a wonderful ship . I work on the flite deck and drove a jeep ,provided ac/dc power for planes and the chopper. Best time of my life.
I watched the Death Tow to the breaker yard recently. As many times (while aboard) as I wished she would be cut up and turned into razor blades; watching that video was SAD and felt like losing a dear friend.
I was stationed aboard the Independence. I was part of OE division. Radar gang and moved over to ships TV systems. I also spent enough time in the ships Brigg (repairing the closed circuit surveillance system) to earn an Invitation to the Marine Corps Ball!!! 1973-1977 a crucial and formative period in my life!
I was AO3 Ron Brandt assigned to squadron VS-37 Sawbucks on this ship in 1989/90. I serviced the S-3 Vikings. I was on the Indy for only that one cruise. I loved it.
I did Med cruses from 10 -74 - 06-77. I was in 6TH division weapons department as a non striker. I was promoted to AMS 3rd class and transferred to AIMD airframes division.
The reporter should have learned some aircraft recognition before taking his assignment. The plane he identified as "another FA-18" was in fact an F-14D Tomcat.
The best carrier in the fleet. The air wing and ships company actually got along great, unlike the nukes I was on.long live the I-5 team! '93-95, VFA-192.

I was with MarDet USS Independence CV-62 from 1991-1993. On our deployment to the middle east, we were invited to participate in the 50th Anniversary of the Battle of the Coral Sea celebrations back in 92'. I recall the Drill Team from Marine Barracks came down aboard the USS Blue Ridge from Yokosuka. I watched one of their outstanding drill exhibition on Indy's flight deck during our visit to Sydney, Australia.
I was on board during this tour! I proudly served on the Indy 9/1994-9/1997!
Marine detachment 94-95 Yokosuka Japan. The only enjoyable thing was being stationed in Japan. Moreover, and going to Australia and Thailand.

This was my US Navy home from February 1971 - July 1974. I worked on the flight deck in Crash & Salvage for V-1 Division / Air Department. GO NAVY! ⚓️
Three hangar bays, the number 3 is pretty much full of gear. Also stored the liberty boats in the 3rd bay.

I was on the Indy in 1971-72 with VA-66, A-7Es, in the Med. no gyms then.
I am a plank holder and completed a med cruise before being discharged in in March 61.
