I was present at the Canadian Warplane Heritage Museum on Sept 22 1988 for the first flight of our Lancaster. It was a very emotional day to see her lift off so gracefully for the first time. There were many veterans there, including a few in WW2 uniforms of the RCAF. She is wonderful to watch in flight - it's amazing that such a huge aircraft can be so graceful in the air.

If I may ask: Did you make your uniform yourself? I am trying out a pattern by a German company (which started in the late 1920's and still exists today) called Lutterloh. They publish little 3 monthly pattern booklets and in 1941 in one of their booklets was a riding outfit (civilian version with loud and colorful fabrics) but the trousers were these obvious horse riding model (bulbous at the upper leg and more tight fitting on the lower legs / tucked into the boots. I wonder if the civilian 1930's riding breeches were any different than the Wehrmacht riding breeches...

Mein Name ist Müller (Miller in German) und mein Pferd heisst Dunkle Stürmische Nacht. Phonetically: Mine (the German mein sounds pretty much like the English mine and means the same too) Name (the a as in the a in extra - e as in uhhh) ist Müller (ü as in mule - so should sound like Mule-er) und mine Pferd (the e as in the i in Minnesota) heisst (ei as the i in ice) Dunkle (u as the ou in you) Stürmische (the sch as in hussing someone sjj - ü as in true) Nacht (a as in the a in extra). Hope that helps... What also helps is to try and find a way to watch some German television.. just to get a feel of the rather special way Germans tend to pronounce words... the Umlaute (ä ë ü ö) are very specific to German. As a cavalryman you may want to learn das Panzerlied (made famous by its use in the movie The Battle of the Bulge - youtube as some clips of it) which is/was used many decades after ww2 until Ursula von der Leyen (yes that von der Leyen who was Minister of Defence somewhere in the 90ś I believe) banned it from modern german military song booklets...not that any cavalryman gives a horse's rear end about that ban though... Whether it storms or snows, Whether the sun smiles upon us, [Whether in] The day's scorching heat, Or the ice-cold of the night, Dusty are the faces, But joyful are our minds, Yes, our minds. Our tank roars there, Along in the storm winds. Kind of what you have going on with your horse now don't you agree?

I visited the museum many times during this restoration. The amount of work that went into this by volunters was staggering. I know I asked, but can't remember why it wasn't restored to taxi or air worthy condition. Was it funding? I believe that the engines weren't beyond repair but there was a problem getting access to a piece of equipment for extracting the cylinders. Apparently the Smithsonian had the only one of these tools. Also, the undercarriage was a mock up in steel because the original was made of magnesium that had desolved away over the years in the waters of the fiord.

Beautiful plane, wonderfully preserved and more importantly USED ! We thank all the Canadians who built, flew, serviced and especially those who paid the ultimate price with their lives on the Lancasters. It's a great pity there are only two left flying, hopefully in about four or five years ( writing this in November 2022 )Just Jane NX611 will be brought up to airworthiness by the Guys and girls at the Lincolnshire heritage aviation centre at East Kirkby Lincolnshire here in the UK

I finally got to go through this aircraft a couple of years ago after having watched it fly around the area for so many years. My Dad was a member back when it was first acquired and I remember seeing it sitting in the old hanger sans wings and tail when it was still painted in its Air Sea Rescue colours. Someone had spray painted a "D" on the end of Rescue. I always love seeing it fly over my house and I can recognize it by the sound before it ever comes into sight.
