Okay I am trying to make a sweater right now and I’m supposed to make 50 rows of 1 hdc in the THIRD AND BACK LOOP of every st. What exactly does this mean?
Without seeing the pattern that is hard to answer. I would suspect you insert your hook in the back loop of the stitch and then into the 3rd loop behind the stitch. I’d suggest maybe messaging the designer to ask for clarification.

after the first 3 rows it's says not to fasten off so do I just start my chain 70 immediately after so all 4 strands are one piece of yarn

I'm sorry I didn't see this earlier. In the case I just Hdc in the chain space in that last stitch.

Thanks for the video! It helped a LOT. One word to anyone getting ready to make this scarf, don't try it in black for your first attempt. I did not take my own advice, and thought I was going to go cross eyed and blind! Stitches are very hard to see in black. Finished product looks great!

If I count the chain 2 as the first stitch, I only get 68 across.

watched the video and still have a little problem with the back loop - is there a still picture showing where it is? thanks
If you look in the original pattern there's a good pic under row 3. Your looking for a horizontal bar on the backside just below the back loop. If you're crocheting tight it will be hard to see and get into. Crochet loose on row 2.
Corrine could you tell me if you stitch the braids together with the next set of braids to make the cowl sit better or can you give me any advice please? Xx
I do. I stack them How I want them to appear and then stick in a few places to hold them together as One piece.

how do you braid for the cowl
when it says to do the 2nd chain 86 and do the pattern all over well what's the extra chains for?
The lower braid is slightly longer (86) which allows for layering.
