Hi, I'm a keen Wellington based outdoors person and school teacher who spends a lot of time exploring the remote parts of Wellington and the Wairarapa. I have been involved in many outdoor activities over the years, however I'm mainly focusing on 4x4 camping, diving and fishing these days along with a bit of hunting. I am putting a series of videos up showing newcomers to the outdoors some of the sites and advice about access and tracks etc.
My current wagon is a 2003 Mitsubishi L400 Delica hi/low 4x4 van with a V6 3 ltr petrol motor and auto trans. It is similar to a Triton ute but with a people mover body on it. Modifications to it include torsion bar lift, 32" muds with upgraded rear springs. Most of the seats are out of it and I have a semi permanent bed, toilet, sink and water tanks so it's fully self contained. It's ideal for 1 and 2 night coastal camps. It's a very powerful and capable 4x4 however being narrow and high I have to careful about speed in tricky country.

Dirt bike rides around the greater Wellington region
มุมมอง 7703 ปีที่แล้ว
Over the last two years I have used bikes to get to many of the remote places along with the van. Many of the trips are with bike clubs on to private land much like the 4wd club trips, also a few quiet rides with friends. Here is a collage of a number of them.
Terawhiti Station Club Dirt Bike Ride 2020
มุมมอง 2153 ปีที่แล้ว
This was a very interesting trip through a closed station last year with the Wellington & Kapiti Motorcycle club. It happens once every two years. Several thousand gold miners used to live here about 120 years ago. It was New Zealand's 10th largest goldfield at the time. There are plenty of gold machinery relics around also several gold mines that I was last in about 25 years ago. The trip star...
Tukino Ski Field Track
มุมมอง 5835 ปีที่แล้ว
This is a must do track if you have a spare hour through the Desert Road. About 14 ks on a rough gravel access road to 1600 mtrs. Some lovely big drop off around the middle of the track but it's quite wide and safe. When I went up in mid October '19, there were people doing allsorts of tramping and MB activities. It's also popular to do in new snow.
Dirt Bike Timber Towbar Carrier
มุมมอง 4385 ปีที่แล้ว
After putting my 4wd van in some dangerous situations over the last year I thought I would start carrying a lightweight dirt bike to some of the more tricky spots like Stonewall etc. I can set up camp then get onto the Desert with a more appropriate vehicle. While I could tow a trailer I thought I would look at a towbar carrier. The only new one in NZ was about $400 or so but I don't think it w...
Takapari Road 4WD drive in Ruahines North Island late April 2019
มุมมอง 6K5 ปีที่แล้ว
This is an interesting drive in trip to the tops of the Ruahines starting about 20 minutes from Ashurst. Most std trucks can get up there. It is mainly loose gravel and clay pans. You end up over the Hawkes Bay side above the Wakararas and Dannevirke. If you catch a good day your views alternate between the Manawatu and the Hawkes Bay. There is a rough A frame hut a fair way along which is mark...
Otaki River Mouth South Bank and Access Tracks
มุมมอง 4775 ปีที่แล้ว
This is an update to last years Te Horo Beach video when the beach was a bit easier. A few minutes after heading north on the Tehoro Beach it starts to get very shingley with the main track going through constant shingle piles if the sea is high. These would get very difficult to drive over in a stock vehicle. I ended up sliding backwards off one of the drift and getting cross axled. I remember...
Mitsubishi Delica L400 2003 Upper Ball Joint Spacer Install

Hokio Beach to Ohau Beach to camp
มุมมอง 3115 ปีที่แล้ว
This is the trip from Hokio Beach at the beginning of Levin through to Ohau beach which is accessed from the beach only these days. It's quite important that you keep an eye on the tide heights if you need to access the beach on high tide. A typical tide 1.8 tide might give you a sliver of driving access in a stock off roader but it is quite hard work through 10 or so ks if you have to be crawl...
Mangahao Dams Shannon - drive in. Jan 2019

This is a basic video of the trip to the second dam. The beginning part of the river is used for national white water comps. Unfortunately I was having resolution and connection issues however it will give you a general idea if you are heading that way. The dams are popular for hunting access however I would plan your trip beforehand as there are a lot of blind tracks. The side track need car a...
Foxton Beach to the beach lagoon around the point
มุมมอง 2695 ปีที่แล้ว
This is a short vid showing the beach trip along Foxton Beach around the point to the lagoon. The lagoon is great in a blustery NW as you get a fair bit of shelter and quite reasonable fishing. The lagoon is only about 5 - 10 minutes walk from the camp ground so it makes it an ideal place to go.

Back up the Rock Garden at Stonewall. October 2018

The full journey is videoed last year. Nothing much has changed other than a small washout on the farmland. This private recreational access corridor starts at Cape Palliser and finishes about 3/4 ks and 3 gates at Stonewall DOC rec area. You are allowed through here to do what you need to (dive/fish/drive etc) other than camp. Camping needs to be a Stonewall. The access is half rutty farmland ...

Hey man, cool stuff, the place when you were above tera whiti station? Where is that and what would i type into google maps to get there to do the trail ride, thanks mate
Hi, the bay is Oteranga Bay (cable bay). It's strictly private, has been for 20 years, managed by Meridian. The Wellington MC club gets on there about every second year for a fund raiser. The only other ways you could get on there is if you know someone who lives on the station or has a service contract with Meridian
Sorry, minor mistake, I was thinking of another vid. That exact spot on the vid is on another fund raiser ride with the same club, but through south karori rd, through to the bach village. It's above bach beach, between windy bay (north) and tongue point (south). You can get around the beaches legally there, but the farm tracks above are only open on the official club rides. There is another ride (kinnoull station) on the 22nd I believe Contact facebook.com/kapitimotorcycleclub
South makara rd, not karori. Also the Kapiti and Well MC are the same org
@@stevedevine6463 Hey man, Oh ok algood, do you have any other spots that are similar to cable bay that isnt to busy. Thanks man! appreciate the replies.
What size are your tires, and do you have a lift or is it on stock height? thanks Steve.
your so sigma sir
very cool!
Samezies
Went to Pekapeka beach for the first time and tried to drive to param but got told off by locals saying I wasn’t allowed to because there’s a bird sanctuary or something
Sorry, should have got back to you earlier. You can only drive south from pekapeka to oliver grove waikanae about 3-4 ks south. Basically all of the waikanae beach south from there is completely off for vehicle access other than boat launching. Yes. There is a bird sanctuary on the waikanae/paraparaumu spit. Also zero beach driving on paraparaumu beaches other than boat launching. Theres plenty of eyes/cams on the beach and regular doc and police floating around
great video!
@12.38 is now about a 7ft high drop
Best of luck getting past the first hill these days
Is that doc land all the way in along the road?
You don't need jack for the top arm , just slacken off the torsion bar. And the sway bar bolt has an allen key in the end of the bolt.
Ok I’m going to be a bit critical here but please don’t take it badly: I have zero idea how to do this job as your video is mainly you talking and virtually no actual doing. One minute the springs are on the floor and the next they’re in the van - I have zero idea how they got there. I really appreciate all advice and tutorials mate I really do so I did get something from this vid but had to go watch others for the actual process.
Thanks for sharing. I’m heading down there this weekend, good to get a heads up on the track
Unfortunately the high track between corner creek and mukamuka washed away about a year ago, then again recently so only walking after the surfers point now
@@stevedevine6463 thanks mate
I saw This video(4th Dec 2022) 1 day after I visit Cape Palliser , I was curious about what's beyond the gate but didn't go through because it says Private Property. so we came back . May be next time will go there, thanks to this video. 🙂
It is private property, but you are allowed to use it as a recreational corridor to get to the stonewall doc camp about 4 ks north. You are allowed to do all the usual activities in the area - such as fishing and diving, also take 4wds and dirt bikes. But just not camp until you are at stonewall. It only is closed if there is a slip, which does happen some years.
@@stevedevine6463 Thanks so much Steve.
great video quick question do you need new shocks or just the stock ones
How can get lift up spring & how much
They are fairly common part with the large suspension suppliers worldwide (except in the US). These are dobinson c109 from memory. About $300 to buy
Landover spring are also a common replacement
Are you able to list the places please? Looks awesome!
Hi, basically the gravel beaches at the earlier is ocean beach/muka muka, also otaki. The flat beach is waitarere. The bush tracks and orange hut is akatarawa with various bikes and club trips. The big trip was a club trip near foxton. Mx was open day near martinbourgh. Final ride with drz was a club trip over the souther coast. All trips either welly/wairarapa/ beaches near foxton

Can you still drive though and camp there?
I haven't been for a few months, but yes. The only reason it is ever closed is if there is a slip and they are waiting for a bulldozer to clear it, or DOC's camp covid policy when in higher levels. A quick call to doc is best if it's the focus of the trip. Make sure you have a bash plate or a relatively high truck
Camping is at the Stonewall doc area, after the 3rd gate - not before - even if others are. It's private rec only day access to the 3rd gate
Hi Steve, local Wainui guys here. Can this be driven with permission or public access? Cheers
Hi HAH. Yes, there is legal vehicle access from Western Lake Rd to the Orongaronga Station gate. I was over there about 2 months ago. However the green and grey slips can stop large truck access for up to a year at a time. This last rain won't have been helpful, however a call to doc can sort that out. There is debatable truck access (according to locals) through the lower big muk river bed to the doc hunting area which starts a k up. The farm manager generally gives access I have heard, but locals feel they have anytime access. Having a proper hunting permit is really important. The newest sign on the track at the muk gate focuses on having the proper hunting permit rather than truck access
@@stevedevine6463 thanks mate.
Hey mate, sweet as van. Do you have an issues opening your sliding door and wheel rub?
Hi Rowan, yes I do, however with the rims being 7" it's not too bad, as long as the van isn't parked on an angle facing the door. Eventually I will get an extension , or make one. I also took off the inner panel to save it
Mate where did you get them spacers from and how much were they
Sorry, I didn' t see the answer. I had a buddy who had an engineering shop a who made them. I will try and add the tech drawing
@@stevedevine6463 Did you manage to find the Tech Drawing? I'd be very grateful if you could! getting these shipped to New Zealand is a hell of a thing to try to do..
@@russellbowden583 They are all over ebay mate.
Was the gate locked? I've spoken to DoC and they say it's not. Just dont want to drive all the way there to find that's it is.
Well doc are responsible for the gate at the end of the farm so that should be right. I guess it's possible the farmer might shut the main road gate from time to time for various reason but they would have to inform doc of that
@@stevedevine6463 Cool, thanks for the reply.
@@stevedevine6463 Did you see any deer/sign through there?
Great videos Steve. I have the same van, Great to see the potential with help & tips from other people🍻
Wow I didn't realize people still go up there on Oct. Your video is really helpful, I was thinking a more difficult track. Looks straight forward if there is no snow.

Great to get down this part of the coast. Thanks for the video.
I've been as far at the lighthouse at Palliser so getting further along the coast was a bit more of an adventure. Very enjoyable. Thanks for the video.
Hey mate, i noticed you hadn’t changed the shock absorbers when you installed bigger springs, did you leave the stock shocks in? If so did you have any problems with them?
Hi Damon, no problems with the stock shocks even though this was several years ago now. Still handles well
How long does the whole process take to fit everything?
I know this a bit outdated and I hope you can respond to me! But is this on the Lost Coast of California?
Worst video ever!! This is not a toyota (they have thd torsion bar atatched to the upper control arm) All you need to do is lift borh front wheels ( instead of fittle with the anti roll bar) The upper control arm you can move by hand when loosen the bolts, just use a lift undet the lover ball joint to adjust pressure/angle to upper control arm
Thanks for the constructive feedback. Great to know how to do it properly if I have to do it again tbh. Generally I just video myself having a crack at a various mods and deal with the problems when they arise. Thats how I roll.lol
@@stevedevine6463 thats great.. what was your experience with the spacer installed and camber?
Probably need to lift it more to get the camber right, the spacers are designed to straighthen up negative camber when lifted. On toyotas the spacers give more lift just by installing couse the torsion bars are attatched to the upper arms. Mitsu is on the lower so spacers give zero lift them self
@@LygnirEvolution Hmmm last time i looked like just now the torsion bars on my L400 were attached to the upper control arms ?
Great ride along thank you
Hi steve thanks for the video, did those springs lift your delica much? im looking at upgrading mine but unsure what to go for? cheers mate
Hi, sorry for the delay. They lifted them about 60 - 75mm unloaded, and have worked very well for years, happily keeping up with normal traffic through a local mountain pass. However, several years on I am now hauling a dirt bike on a carrier. Even though the carrier and bike are only about 130kg, there is a bit of sag. So the springs have worked very well for 4wd lift and handling, but might not be the best for serious weight carrying
Too many idiots have ruined this track and hut
They should repair the slip around the coast...i ride from lake ferry when the lake is closed on quads can no longer go any further than the road washout.
I believe they have in the last month or two. Though it seems like a major engineering undertaking filling in the chasm

Hi Steve. According to the council's website you can drive between Peka Peka and the south entrance to Te horo beach where your video ends. The no vehicle access is between the south Te horo beach entrance and the north Te horo beach entrance (where the little stream is, Mangaone stream) Hope this helps. Here is the link to the info on the council's website - www.kapiticoast.govt.nz/our-district/beaches/vehicles-on-the-beach/
Hi there, just wondering are there good spots to park up and setup a rooftop tent along the beach? would love to bring the wife and daughter here for a weekend.
Any where is great as long as you think about the following: The main points to watch out for on any of those beaches is checking that the tide isn't going to be too high. Std high is about 1.8mtrs which leaves dozens of metres to park up, but if it is up to , say, 2.3 with a bit of swell you will be camping in the middle of of the main driving line. You can drive onto a dune track of course and park up in the dunes. Wind is a bit issue as well. One of the reasons I like Foxton is that you can drive into the lagoon area to camp up overnight which takes you out of the direct line of the prevailing northerlies. You cant do that with beaches further south.
The road turns right and goes around to the right. The steep track is for the more capable decked out 4wd's. It is about another 2km?? to very end off track. It is no harder than what you have driven already.
Thanks Keith. We had been driving for about 6 hours by then and were keen to find somewhere nice to camp as the sun was going down and it was getting cold. My research showed that that the track just got progressively worse so decided to leave it there. There were several hunters staying up there so it was easier just to leave it for another day
