percussion knapping a complex spall
this was an extremely difficult and complex reduction destined to solidify my status as a premier "lithic influencer" on the world stage. probably. i know one thing - i couldn't have done it without me. watch it, you'll see. it's super speshul. i whacked the heck-fire maynard out of that hunk of silica. sincerely, freeze cracked.
p.s. - any resemblance of the cortexed side of that spall to a potato was purely coincidental. i would never hit an innocent potato.

why did i pick *this* rock to hit?!
มุมมอง 2.2Kปีที่แล้ว
poor judgment and a desire to not waste good flint on youtube videos, i guess. don't know. i can't say that it seemed like a good idea at the time, cuz it didn't. maybe i've just gotten to an age and stage that i think looking ignernt online doing percussion knapping chaos is kind of amusing. but then again - i'm freeze cracked.

hi. i mainly am posting this to illustrate the sort of rock you should never even take home, let alone hit, and then i realize halfway through hitting it that i'm making such slow progress reducing the chert (that thinks it's granite) that i'll probably end up with an ugly point in maybe three weeks of continuous effort, so i switch rocks and hit some more, and then at some point mercifully end...

this annoying little nodule came from the tougher part of the texas hill country. i mean, it isn't that the material isn't consistent - it's just that it's consistently tough. i think i knap troublesome rocks on video as an excuse to keep from attempting to make something gee whiz and super good where i'd have to think and be organized and talented and such. the main drawback is all the times i...

direct percussion ultra-tough cobble
มุมมอง 4.3K2 ปีที่แล้ว
ok this may not have been my worst idea ever but it was definitely not my best idea. crowleys ridge cobbles come from northeast arkansas and are semi-indestructible. this of course is what led me to attempt to destruct one. it was kinda like death by laborious ineffective bifacing. you should watch it so that i won't have suffered alone.

whacking and talking (as usual) on a flattened nodule of pedernales area texas flint. i stopped this video sort of near the end of my use of direct percussion but at the end show the "finished" point that i made from the biface using mainly indirect percussion and then edges finished with pressure. thanks for watching if you did :) freeze cracked

    I have learned the most obvious fact about fluting. If a knapper chooses to make a fluted point, use high quality silicate material. A knapper can thin lesser quality rock by following ridges, preparation of platforms, etc., and hard strikes of lesser quality rock and make a point. But a point that requires finesse either with notching or fluting will see greater success using good material. That little “snap” tinkle or crack sound from a rather gentle using direct or indirect strikes is the material needed for fluting in particular. A thinned point, particularly a point thinned by Indirect Percusión having a flat rather than a pronounced convex cross section, cannot withstand power strikes unless angles are absolutely perfect. You videos are really, really good. I wish I had found them years ago.

  • @arvilmogensen1945
    @arvilmogensen1945 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

    I watched this video in the year 2024. Interesting to me, I did everything as shown learning on my own progressing through trial and error. Indirect Percussion thins the preform and creates “flat surfaces” because that is the end result of thinning flakes (NO convexity). And EXACTLY as described in the video invariably “humps and bumps” created by thinning flakes sure enough stalls the flute creating short flutes. Get aggressive creating a heavier nipple thinking a deeper longer flute and SNAP, …… another broken Clovis. Boo Hoo !!!

I have to ask and waste your time sir but we are recovering from a total loss uninsured fire and most all materials and tools are a loss. My 14 year old girl has been knapping with me for 5 years now. Is there a classifieds type market on materials and maybe used tools? Every penny is being pinched right now but i dont want my girls interest to be lost due to me. She loves the materials and tools you use ss do i. Where can i find those and how costly are they. • @freezecracked8382
      @freezecracked8382 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      indirect percussion understanding has evolved quite a bit since i was first experimenting with it. my concept now is to usually stick with whatever minimal punch diameter is required to get the contact surface i want on the platforms and then have the punch set fairly deep in around a 1"-1 1/4" delrin rod so that i can use various percussors and strike fairly close to the punch. this allows me to control the momentary storage/delivery of energy into the work, and scale or alter the energy by switching percussors. but basically, if you achieve a high level of understanding of indirect, scaling it up or down isn't a huge switch. you can even use large copper spalling hammers as punches and hit them with larger spalling hammers if needed. but indirect will always be different from direct so i use my experience to know which will be best for the particular things i'm trying to do.

    Thank you. My pressure flaking sucks. End up with steep 45° edges and then next pass is just a copy of first, same angle but flakes no longer, but now the point is narrower. Particularly right now on keokuk. I can do better on obsidian or glass. Same results w antler or copper hand flakers. I have the strength, just not the knowledge yet. I’ll work up an Ishi stick and also work on the edge prep/platforms. Hope you are well.

      it sounds like you at least understand the issues needing to be addressed, which is good. hopefully watching more video and practicing just the basics will help. what delays a lot of progress is the strong desire to make finished work as opposed to learning to control and get the individual flake that's great.

    How do you limit bulbs of percussion?

    • @freezecracked8382
      @freezecracked8382 ปีที่แล้ว

      the bulb is temporary distortion off of a straight run of the crack due to the high initial energy load into the platform before the crack initiates and the energy is released into the run. factors involved are the strength of the platform, whether it's isolated, toughness of the material, rigidness of the support, mass of the percussor, speed of the percussor, and angle of the strike. so if you work raw material with well isolated platform and go with larger, slower force at a more downward "peeling initiation" angle, and bridge with support underneath to redirect the energy into lateral run, you won't get much of a bulb. but basically, if you mess with even one of the variables it can help. with indirect the issue is magnified because indirect can focus way too much force super fast on a small spot. some very experienced direct-percussion knappers can't figure out what they're doing wrong with indirect because they're blowing through platforms and getting bad runs due to just too much force too fast.

    • @NarheimArmoury
      @NarheimArmoury ปีที่แล้ว

      @@freezecracked8382 Thanks for taking the time to explain. Concavity caused by bulbs has become my main limiting factor, indeed mostly when relying on indirect percussion. I'll try and play with those variables.
