Not gonna lie, I'm like 5 hours into the game and the amount of dialog has made me skip the story.

Tartare's voice is terrible in the English dub. He sounds like a haughty noble in some period piece british soap opera, instead of a grizzled veteran that lost everything that mattered to him before becoming an amoral tool for his Theocratic country. Hamilton sounds almost the same age as Denam, without any gravitas and doesn't sound like an old soldier. Same with Leonar, he is 27, but sounds almost like Denam, who is supposed to be a teenager. Denam is great, the problem is that Leonar should sound older, more conflicted and more deceiving in certain routes. Andoras sounds too old and should have a different accent. Not necessarily an African or Jamaican one, just different than the rest since he comes from a conquered land. Ravness sounds too old for being a 23 year old. The VA is good but not suited for the character. Same with Arycelle. Honestly, the voice acting was more miss than hit for me. The only ones I thought were truly fitting were Denam and Ozma. Everyone else was either OK, bad or terrible.

what is that horse shape Item at 5:13? I play many time that game and I never saw that item.

I"m not sure Matsuno would approve of them trying to tie the plots together, but he has flipped flopped on things in the past, but doesn't necessarily mean this. It's a very odd choice to have a sharp contrast in the main's personality from what we know of the dark knight. Yes, you can change a lot from a 15 year old, yet it seems more fitting to have separate stories. One that has defeated an angel is going to be far more into themselves and have some of those past connections aiding him.

Good criticisms. Good video. For me though, the game is a masterpiece in that "the good outweighs the bad by too large of a degree" way. I'll always have extremely fond memories of the little GBA game where I had to force all my depressed friends back into their horrible nightmare lives for some reason.

What about giving up the Rosell in chapter 12 though? Does that change the game? Pretty sure it makes Federica leave earlier.

4:25 no. The ffta games dont have the replay value from fft early job unlocks and setup variety because everything is tied to weapons. 4:54 no charge time for spells too, though I admit fft implemented that poorly, especially cloud and spells slower than holy. Swiftness was a pain and forced a black mage setup to keep attack magick. Jail was a pain too, though ffta2 just takes away rewards at least.

I personally adored FFTA. It was my first tactical RPG and one of my first JRPGs ever (having been introduced to the genre by Pokémon Red, Silver and Golden Sun). I regret so much never actually owning it physically. I don't mind the kiddier or simpler plot because having never played FFT and being a kid at the time it being my first Isekai story and being such a good one (it and Escaflowne which I saw later are still my favourite takes) felt pretty advanced writing for a game at the time for me. It's mission structure, music and spritework also felt so incredibly cozy that I didn't even consider I was missing any more serious plot or structure. I wish we got a remaster of all FFT as well as new iterations of the franchise apart from Triangle Strategy. I've also always dreamt of tactics spinoffs with this graphical style but based on worlds such as Spira with its own species.

The very first Let's Play I ever watched on TH-cam was CoffeePotato completing every Ogre Battle game using only faeries, starting with Knight of Lodis. Seeing you get the Don Quixote award for how weak they were really brought me back to the early days of TH-cam.

I... Hate that they took an established setting, gave us an iffy 'this might actually all be a dream' isekai with it, and then cleared nothing up (did this actually happen in Ivalice? Is the original Ivalice also some fakeness? Are we REALLY playing a Square game about a Square game?) when it ended. Then they released the sequel (and War of the Lions) which made everything even more confusing. Just... Give us stories in the world you spent all this time creating. What the hell was this

I agree with your opinions on the law system being very cumbersome and obtuse. Why doesn't it, nor the sequel, warn you when you're about to break a law? Then there's the fact that the penalties are too severe. You lose your character for multiple battles, and you can even have permanent stat reductions. Ridiculous! This has resulted in me resetting the game countless times. And, agreed, having a limit on the number of items that you can hold is frankly dumbfounding. I think that the mission structure in this title works well but the sequel definitely has stories with more meat to them. I disagree about most criticisms leveled at the story. I don't think it really needed to be any deeper than it is. Perhaps a little more battling with Ritz, Marche initially enjoying the fantasy before coming to the realisation that it is all fake, Donad pulling a few more mischievous acts throughout the game would've upped the stakes (he appears far too late in the game), and a few more conversations about the hardships each member faced in the real could've made it a little more emotionally impactful. But overall, I prefer this plot over the original Tactics. That title has less fleshed out characters and more political ideologies in human form. I think more time could have been spent talking about the actual battles in this review. Particularly how you acquire abilities. My thoughts are that it takes way too many fights to acquire skills and abilities permanently. One thing to warn anyone going into this for the first time is not to level up too much, as it means that story missions become a cake walk. I did my first playthrough with almost no grinding for the first time ever, earlier this year, and it was a lot more enjoyable because of it. This title definitely needs a re-release, with improvements made to increase fluidity and the length of time needed to get the best skills.

Love this game! I know its got its naysayers, but it's a lot better than critics give it credit for. I have no doubt it would benefit greatly from a remake to really make it shine (unlikely but still haha). Great video as always!

While it does have its shortcomings, I really enjoyed FFTA as a teen and can appreciate the themes it was trying to convey as an adult.

Great video! <3 Playing VS now in 2024 - for the, maybe, 20th time. It never bores me. Everytime I play it I enjoy new details of the scenery/character/dialogues that I missed the previous times. It's so fun to look up at old/medieval words to find new keys of reading the game dialogues. Like, for example, I recently realized the "milk of the poppy" of Samantha's faith monologue, actually refers to the potent painkilling potion that is present in some folklore (bleating for your faith as though it were milk of the poppy). After having fun with maximizing damascus weapons with affinities and scores (it gets boring after a while as you one-shot anything except Asura and Death), I'm now aiming to turn the rapier you get at the beginning of the game (from the first undead) into a damascus rapier. Sacrificing a Holy Win at the Godhands workshop, for a rapier. Sounds crazy and fun! xD I think your point on Ashley (Ashleigh) name being connected to the (ash) tree in his memories is totally amazing. I really never thought of that! Did you know Rosencrantz and Guildernstern are two characters from Shakespeare's Hamlet? About Joshua... I've always believed he is Sydney's little brother (and the kid in the painting and in Merlose and Ashley's visions is young Sydney). Any hint on how Sydney "gave up his limbs to the gods"? That is a powerful, intriguing line I'd love to know more about. But - alas- there are so many mysteries in this game I would love to find out! Like... Grissom's fate. Why did he have to turn into a cold one? How does it end with Tieger? So many questions! Regarding the connection between VS, 12 and FFT, I believe it to be true. There is clearly a small region somewhere near Dalmasca called "The Greylands", and theoretically, Lea Monde lies somewhere near ruined Nabudis and the Dead Swamp of Nabreus. A fitting place for the Dark indeed, though I don't how the single stories are set up on a time line. It is said FF12 comes millennia before VS. Strange to believe that airships, nethecite and near sci-fi technology comes thousands of years before a medieval world like Vagrant Story's. Another VS link in FF12 could be found at Bur-Omisace, the holy mountain of Kiltians - another word that is present in VS. Speaking of merchandise... I own a solid silver Iocus Rood pendant, inspired by Tia's necklace (which is the necklace Ashley has). It's not official merch., I had it made as a custom work. I didn't know about the wine really existing! That thing left me wide-eyed! I wonder now - which of the four wines would that be... Valens, Volare, Virtus or Prudens? Cheers mate! It's so nice seeing other VS fans out there! A good chunk of my life lives thanks to this game. <3

God I loved this game. I remember seeing it in Nintendo power and for some reason being captivated by it and when I played it, it was really confusing because I was little, but ended up being an amazing story and experience one of the coolest games ever for me

On my 5th playthrough, revisiting the Golden route now that I have a full cast. Benedict's ending was my first ending and I agree it felt most logical vs Roland's almost felt cringe, a bit season 8 Dany Targaryen. Frederica's voice acting saved Roland's ending tbh. During Benedict's ending I enjoyed seeing Gustadolf on our side, motivated to play his part, and although a bit of a harsh of a leader he wasn't a liar. This is a masterpiece of a game and I hope they make a sequel.

I will use the name Paume as in French word for the inside part of the palm. And there is a God Damn reason I am using this so yeah, as an SF enthusiast those names mean what you have discovered is my bet. I am thinking to link one crucial chapter dealing with a theme of failing to see in the world the presence of or a track of a higher power and palm of a hand with the name of my protagonist. I think that "trope" is a thing every writer has in its mind. The names always mean something, outline some idea in a story. Your observation is in such accord with the way I as a writer thought from the beginning of my writing process that I would bet that was something done intentionally. If they ever do the remake with fast load times there will be a mass flood of VOGS Vagrant Original Story players bousting ;P I like this honey sunlignht in the thick glass style of your video.
