October 2024 Lagoon at Noon - Seagrasses & Seaweeds in the Indian River Lagoon (& Beyond!)
Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institute at Florida Atlantic University (HBOI-FAU) has conducted world class research in the Indian River Lagoon (IRL) and around the world for over 50 years. At this Lagoon at Noon lecture, Rachel Brewton, HBOI-FAU Assistant Research Professor, discusses variability in the abundance and ecology of seagrass and seaweeds in the IRL, and describes the role of the HBOI-FAU Seagrass Nursery in upcoming restoration efforts. She also covers what these aquatic plants can tell us about the health of a marine ecosystem and what might be driving the changes in abundance that have been observed in the IRL.

April 2024 Lagoon at Noon - Florida's Lionfish Invasion
มุมมอง 3707 หลายเดือนก่อน
Lionfish are an invasive species to Florida waters wreaking havoc on the local reef ecosystems. Because they do not have a natural predator, their populations have been allowed to expand rapidly in Western Atlantic and Gulf of Mexico waters. The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) started the Lionfish Program in 2014 to begin addressing these issues and has been facilitating...

Fine-grained, organic-rich polluted sediments (“muck”) in estuaries result from coastal development and human activities and are a global phenomenon in estuaries. Runoff in the Indian River Lagoon carries yard debris, eroded soils, and surface pollutants into the estuary, where they contribute directly and indirectly to the organic load in sediments. The IRL’s benthic habitat is smothered with ...

What about opening the Mosquito Lagoon dykes and allowing the marsh to help in the cleaning process?

I think they need to dig an inlet connecting the ocean to the lagoon.

@@timp6858 nope didn't have two hours. So is an inlet a good idea or bad idea

@@Thedude897 Inefective and cost prohibitive. We don’t see a big improvement across large swathes of the Sebastian area. It’s extremely expensive to dig and maintain the inlet itself, plus the cost of ongoing shoreline restoration along the beach that will be required. There will also be the muck flowing out that will end up on the beaches.

@@timp6858 Thank for the explanation. I used to wade fish around sebastian because the sea grass was good so I figured it was because of the inlet. Plus I was wading by port canaveral in the banana river and the sea grass was good. I stopped fishing over there because how bad the water got. I hope they figure something out.
