A Probation Officer - Essential Readings MUST HAVE BOOKS FOR CRIMINOLOGY GRADUATES CAREER
I’m currently studying geography and sociology at uni, I’ve been applying to graduate schemes and researching jobs. Watching this video has really helped me out, I’m really interested in becoming a probation officer. Thank you!
Thank you so much for all these videos, it's really helping, I've just started as a case administrator/ assistant to a probation officer manager. I am working my way to being a qualified probation officer.
Definitely not the most dangerous job in the UK however let's look at some statistics properly. Probation service can be a dangerous job, primarily due to mental health risks and potential physical dangers when dealing with offenders. Officers face high stress levels, heavy workloads, and the risk of encountering violent individuals. While specific danger statistics are limited, the service suffers from severe understaffing (up to 35% vacancy rates in some regions) and excessive caseloads (officers managing up to 200% of normal workload). These factors contribute to increased risks for probation officers. Every probation service inspected over a 2.5-year period received a failing grade, highlighting systemic issues. Although not universally considered the most dangerous profession, the job involves significant challenges and potential risks. Going off topic, but I do believe there needs to be more men in the service because I believe women are to risk of averse all the time and that's not always a good thing.
Absolutely agree haha😊l
I didn’t have any experienced and I’m now through to the final stage:)

Not trying to be rude, but if people don't know what to expect from an interview bearing in mind it's all laid out on their website so if they still don't know or they don't do preparation work then they shouldn't become probation officers.
Not trying to be disrespectful, you need to get rid of the music it’s taking away what you’re trying to achieve with this video
Curiously enough, I managed to progress through the entire process without mentioning any relevant experience whatsoever. Although it was not disclosed during my application, I had previously worked as a residential social worker some time ago. My roles included supporting individuals with learning disabilities and working within children’s services. It is rather perplexing that I advanced to the final stages, given that I did not possess any up-to-date skills. Certainly, this situation did not evoke feelings akin to imposter syndrome.
What are good questions to ask at the end of the interview if you are already a PSO?
Here’s some examples: Can you describe the typical caseload for a PO here, and what support is provided to manage that? (Get a feel for their reaction and how they answer your question) What opportunities are in place to support career development What are some of the biggest challenges currently facing PO’s in this area? Hope it goes well 🙏🏽

To be frank, I would recommend that individuals pursue a degree in social work-or its master's equivalent. This qualification tends to offer superior career prospects, as was previously the case in probation services. However, the probation field has become rather specialised, which has led to a discrepancy in Scotland and Northern Ireland, where a social work degree is a mandatory requirement.
Once you’ve survived the 15 to 27-month training gauntlet (yes, that’s longer than it takes to grow a decent beard), you’ll be raking in the big bucks - £35,000 and up! Time to upgrade from Tesco Value to Tesco Finest, eh? If you stick around long enough and don’t lose your marbles dealing with offenders who think community service is a new type of mobile network, you might even hit the jackpot of £38,000+. Champagne and caviar for tea, anyone? Well, maybe just a Greggs sausage roll and a cuppa. But wait, there’s more! You’ll get a pension that’ll have you living it up in Benidorm when you’re 80, enough holiday time to actually use that gym membership you keep forgetting about, and the chance to climb the career ladder (just don’t let any of your clients nick it). So, is it “relatively good for what you do”? Well, if you fancy spending your days trying to reform people who think breaking and entering is a legitimate career choice, all while earning less than a London barista with a man bun, then yes, it’s bloody marvellous! Just remember, the real reward is knowing you’re making a difference… and that you can always supplement your income by flogging contraband Hobnobs to your colleagues. Cheers!
I say, it seems I didn’t quite catch why you left the service, but after having a good old nose around and watching a few videos, it’s become rather clear. The job appears to be a bit of a pressure cooker, doesn’t it? Quite a hefty workload for the pay packet, and some rather tricky situations to boot. I was actually mulling over joining myself, you know. Made it to the final hurdle and everything. Mind you, I’m coming from a fairly well-paid gig, but I fancied the idea of giving something back, as it were. Thought this might be just the ticket. But blimey, based on what you’re saying, it doesn’t sound like a career for everyone, does it? Yet, at the same time, you’re sort of championing folks to join up. Bit of a sticky wicket, that. One might end up feeling rather knackered and disillusioned before too long. Statistically speaking, it’s not painting the rosiest picture, is it? Still, I suppose it takes all sorts, and some might find it rewarding despite the challenges. But cor, it does make one think twice about diving in, doesn’t it?

Do you have an idea how it works if you do the part-time programme? Like, how are the 30 months divided (like you said now 6 + 9), how much do you work per week, can you request to work specific days, etc.? I've applied to start in March 2025, fingers crossed!

Music ruins it.
I love the point you make about transferable skills in life after Probation. Following leaving Probation I have ended up working as a self - employed entertainer specialising in working with people with dementia and learning disabilities. I'm really busy and still going strong aged 69 years. I love what I do. Your video is so refreshingly sincere and honest and I love the way are so open about yourself. I loved working in Probation in many ways but got worried about workloads and the sense of direction we were going in.
@@JohnEbrington-d7b thanks for sharing your experience John and thank you I appreciate the comment, nice to hear what people move onto after, workloads are extreme they think that’s normal it’s so sad
@@HowtobeaProbationOfficer I love your You Tubes ! Well done.
@@HowtobeaProbationOfficer I have recently published a book and doing You Tubes as a way of trying to promote my book. The You Tubes have been attracting comments from service users who have complaints about Probation. I think you mention that you have experienced the same. Some of the messages are quite disturbing.
