SHe Was Brave Solo Show January 28 -March 9, 2024
Emily-Kate Berger, a multi-disciplinary sustainable artist, has embraced art as a fundamental mode of expression throughout her life. Drawing inspiration from Pablo Picasso's adage, "Art washes away the dust of everyday life," Berger finds in art a profound escape. It serves as her sanctuary, a place where the constraints of the present, past, and future dissolve, leaving a canvas for unbridled creativity and expression.
Berger's personal battlesartistic, particularly her fight against breast cancer, have profoundly influenced her path. This challenging phase in her life didn't diminish her artistic spirit; instead, it redirected and intensified it. Art became more than an outlet; it transformed into a source of strength and resilience, fueling new directions and perspectives in her work.
The show’s title refers to Emily-Kate’s tension between societal expectations and genuine selfhood. The quote “She is brave and strong and broken all at once” from Anna Funder underscores the duality of being lauded as a "warrior" yet confined by these labels, with strings stitching together a denim version of herself and fellow cancer survivors to symbolize both the supportive and restrictive forces in her life and speak to the physical pain that still lingers from her journey. The stitches illustrate the literal scars left by breast cancer. The words in her pieces to express pain that can’t be visualized. Every piece is made from recycled materials. Collectively, Emily-Kate's figures compose a family that exudes compassion amidst their evident struggles.

Vegas story.... 1980 14yrs old, first family holiday abroad (from UK). Mum had old school friend in Odessa, Texas and cousin in LA. Dad decided to hire car and drive from Odessa to LA and back. The Specials were like gods to me, I took some cassettes but none of the US kids I met were impressed at all, it was all rock for them back then. Had tickets to see The Specials when I got back, turn out to be the best gig ever, backed up by US band The GoGos. Anyway, stayed a night in Vegas along the way. we booked into hotel in the evening. Just before we went out I switched on TV to the immediate start of Too Much Too Young live on a US TV chat show. Couldn`t believe it, they never made it in any way in US back then. Must have been a rare promotional push and I caught it by chance on live TV.
They are one of my alltime favorite bands and now my 16 year old son, a bass player (upright and electric) and a Jazz major at performing arts high school loves them as much as I do. After he played his own sold out Jazz show on Friday I got to take him to the sold out Specials show. We were right up front. At one point I looked back and I did not see him and then he popped up from the pit in his ska tie and suit with the hugest smile on his face :) It was a great night
Bring back JB. There must be a way.
I wish, I did not even know he had passed :(
