just here to talk about media, pop culture, psychology, and current events! a lot of the things I discuss are particularly through the lens of asian cultural themes and phenomena-hope you'll join me :)
Is Japan Really Experiencing an Overtourism Crisis?
Japan has been attracting millions of tourists within the past few years, much due to the help of government initiatives and visitors posting about their trips on social media. But while visitation numbers have rapidly increased, is the country actually on the brink of overtourism? Or is it all being exaggerated?

The Confusing Marketing of Global Girl Groups: A Case Study of Katseye
มุมมอง 3.1K21 วันที่ผ่านมา
I love Katseye, but it seems like a lot of people (myself included) are confused with HYBE/Geffen's marketing of the group. I just wanted to talk a little bit about it since I watched the documentary a couple weeks ago! tags: #katseye #hybe #hybelabels #geffen #popstaracademy #commentary #kpop
Countries who are actually experiencing an overtourism crisis: France Spain Italy Turkey Countries who complain they are experiencing an overtourism crisis when they actually aren't: Japan
Exactly! There are a lot of countries now that don't need a tourist visa to go to Japan and still the tourists from those countries didn't increase 😂
A little correction. The lack of garbage disposal containers in public places and bringing your trash home with you are not Japanese cultural norms. There used to be garbage disposal containers everywhere. However, a rash of terrorism incidents involving garbage disposal containers in the mid 90s resulted in the removal of most of them and the concept of bringing home your trash was born. However, nobody has ever liked it and with the influx of tourists now, garbage disposal containers in public places are happily reappearing again.
When the yen was strong, the US had more japanese tourists. People want to see new things on the cheap.
Japans economy is terrible rn, no such thing as overtourism.
*how* it's terrible is important and tourism doesn't immediately fix things.
@@neutral139 of course it doesn't by itself but considering how bad the economy is Japan can't afford to be picky. They simply should have some changes to adapt to the demand, then it'll be really helpful.
And it's going downhill, soon even India will surpass Japan.
Oh no im going in literally 3 days haha. I promise to be good.
@@emeraldb1690 hahaha as long as you’re respectful it’s nothing to be stressed out about! have a fun and safe trip 💓
@@freshfaithed wdym i’m british of course everyone speaks english 😸
Sorry guys correction at 3:51 I meant to say 35 million! That’s the projected number of inbound tourists by the end of this year, which would a record number.
PD Bang’s “selling” katseye as Kpop when all their songs r in English ..he’s using K-pop’s new popularity to push his group.. not a fan
La Lisa is no longer Kpop either… she should not receive music awards in the Kpop category…she takes away from true Kpop groups
As an Americian & BTS army ..I don’t think PD Bang has Kpop best interest in Mind..he is ruining Kpop to the point of EXTINCTION. He just wants the money
I’m Japanese-Korean (Korean growing up in Japan), I live in the Shinagawa city, and it’s hilarious there is lots of foreigner everytimes I go to the train station, from Spring to Winter there is overcrowd amount of foreigners (summer is like as if half of the people in the city are foreigners).
Gosh I’ve only been to Japan in the summer once a very long time ago, but I can’t imagine what it’s like to live amongst that level of crowding 😭 I was already overstimulated by the amount of people around in the wintertime
my flights on sale in the UK were £600 booking over 6 months in advance (so around ¥117,000) which is frankly insane prices. Then combined with the weak Yen as a whole it makes it so much more possible to travel. That being said, as someone who adores Japanese culture and how respectful its people are to their history and their environment now, I wish more tourists would be as respectful to Japan and its people when travelling. The rubbish thing is such a pet peeve to me, as I'd assume these tourists are staying somewhere, so keep it in your bag and dispose of it at the hotel etc. at the end of the day. Also, this is the first time I felt like having to state "いいえ、私はイギリス人です" (No, I'm English), so I think there is a lot of anti-American tourism going on that is being driven by social media.
right I think it’s wonderful that more people are being exposed to Japanese culture and customs, but at what cost 😩 I think the individualist vs. collectivist culture difference also makes for particular friction with some Western tourists as well (although of course not all visitors are disrespectful)
Yes, yes we are. Weak yen and shitty social video coverage. Low quality people are now coming through.
tourist overflow is like drinking salt water. you drink to get even thirstier. it's a loop that feeds itself. it's a curse that makes the lives of locals miserable. mediterranean/balkan friends will understand what I'm saying. Let me give an example. I'm from turkey. Right now in Antalya (mediterranean city) there is a strong russian/ukrainian diaspora going on. They own businesses, they have their tourism networks, they have their properties and large capital. Locals have to move out because the area has gotten ridiculously expensive. It's a clear example of what tourism has potential for. Locals are normal regular humans but these blondes bring expensive luxury stuff where they go so local people are at misery.
Basically, I agree with your consideration. I love Japan. So I don't want their culture to be destroyed by tourists. The number of trash cans should maintain the status quo. I think it should be regulated by law like in Singapore so that some Japan and tourists who cannot follow the rules will also follow them.
It’s really not that hard to understand. Yall are making it hard to understand.
People are complicating things. Do you like the group? Do you like the members? Do you think they are pretty? Do you like their aesthetics? Do you think they're talented? Do you like their music (so far)? Do you like their dance videos? Do you watch them in social media? Do you feel the need to watch when there's a new uploaded video all about KATSEYE? Then follow them. Don't overcomplicate things. It doesn't matter what kind of group they are. If you're a "kpop stan" but KATSEYE is a Global Group, then so what? You can still like another foreign group even when you're a die-hard kpop stanner. If listening to KATSEYE lifts up your mood, then just follow them. EASY. This is not quantum physics, or your infuriating crush giving you mixed signals. 🤦♂
It was really interesting hearing your take on this group…wondering if you’re familiar with Blackswan and if you can take sometime to share your opinion on them. I really like and support them and it’s always interesting to hear other people’s perspectives
*#Katseye** as Disney Princesses* 👸✨️ Manon as ARIEL Sophia as RAYA Daniela as CINDERELLA / BELLE Lara as JASMINE Megan as MULAN Yoonchae as SNOW WHITE ❄️✨️
*Katseye Cinematic Universe 😻✨️ (KCU)*
Katseye will be different! they will become huge! I will go as far to say they will become the next Pussycat dolls with KPOP flair to it.
12:09 that's the same in other things too like sports teams ,but doesn't mean they won't choose players from other countries because they're worried about the reason you stated
I think KPOP is a promotion of Korean culture like language, attire or you are a Korean citizen who become an artist who might sing English or Korean. I think of this because I think blackpink Lisa should no longer be on KPop category. She is not Korean and does not promote Korean culture she is more on Pop without a K attach to her and I think it is unfair to the Korean artists. If she is on Blankpink group then she is under Kpop category. So I think Katseye is on pop category. Many asians like Japan, Thailand, China and Philippines is using the Korean methods on idol groups so maybe after 5 to 10 years it will be an Asian Pop category.
I just loved your points. i'm really intrigued about how they gonna make it out this kpop bubble. I'm assuming that starting with the asian press made everyone confused. It seems that they took a break and i think they might do some US press this year, they already announced the jingle ball festival
Kpop is sooo confusing XG girl group is Jpop but handled by Korean Company is WHAT????
Their company is a subsidiary under avex a Japanese conglomerate. Simon who runs it is mixed with Korean & Japanese.
@@User-gftfbiu3454 so are they kpop or jpop?
@@Dgrtag Actually none of their songs are categorized under kpop or jpop. They put each song in the actual genre they’re singing in. Whether it’s pop, r&b, hip hop, etc. They don’t even have Korean members, they perform wherever they can. Japan, Korea, the states, anywhere. I believe they typically call themselves a global group. So like katseye. I don’t think they want to be limited by their ethnicity/nationality?
@@Dgrtag And XG was actually promoted as a global group also, which is why all their songs are in English.
7:55 the bsides are definitely are authentic to them even if they didn’t write it , the only songs that don’t really relate to them is touch and debut personally
Maybe you dont understand the Word "Kpop Methodology".
xg and vcha is global girl group list?
Weather you like it or not katseye is all rounder katseye is kpop katseye is the pop group, what's wrong with being labeled as kpop group feel threatened 😂😂
I think Hybe needs to loosen their grips on Katseye because it's obvious that it seems like they're focusing a bit too heavily on the asian market. I also think they should stop uploading their music videos on the Hybe youtube channel and even putting a Korean title on their music videos, this makes it confusing for the new audience to distinguish who their market is
Wdym they should stop uploading on hybe channel? When literally Hybe is the one who promotes them in Asian country? with a big subscriber, that's a huge advantage tbh. And there's Giffin record for their western promotion.
From what I’m hearing they will do more western activities, but they’ve already done a good bit. Good morning America, Kissfm, iheartradio, in style, z109 radio, teen vogue, fashion week, etc. They’re only missing late night shows and festivals. But it’s still early in their career. Right now they are reaping the benefits of being a collaboration between both hybe & geffen. Why wouldn’t they upload onto a channel with 75million subscribers? I feel like the pros vastly outweighs the cons. If it was hindering their careers I’d understand but it’s not. We’ll see how they further progress into the western side. But I think it was a good decision laying the groundwork for a proper fanbase in various parts of Asia early. By building rapport, and establishing their image in the public eye.
@@User-gftfbiu3454 Also, adding to your statement, these girls only have 3 songs out right now lol They’re still fairly new and all of the opportunities will start coming as they grow in their respective industry. Very well said!
@@velky_reeds Oh wow a South Korean company making titles in korean?!?!? how dare they?!?! Be serious, nobody is confused and if somebody is, google is free.
This videos is so pointless. You made a 14 min video about katseyes ,the global group, but everything you said about them in the video also applies to every kpop idol. Its been like that since the first idol group that i liked which was snsd. You just blabbed the entire video.
Fifth harmony was the last big girl group to make it from America. I think that katseye can definitely fit what 5h left off in the states. They are gonna have to get the right writers & the good promotion & theyll be fine.
Me personally I see katseye as a pop group like fifth harmony and little mix. The promotions are a little bit different but they have the best of both worlds since they’re managed by both a korean and american label so they have access to more opportunities than other current pop groups that are sadly flopping right now.
Vcha survivals how is better I ....it's free in yt (survival show is called a2k)
😂😂😂😂
Oh no, not this joker again! 😂 this person posts mean things anout katseye on every katseye video. They literally go out of their way to bash the group. They must be exhausted!
@@strawberrylime33 babe it's not mean but it's the truth
@@strawberrylime33 ermmm seriously u know even katseye top vocalist Lara can't sing check the Mr removed 👀
@@Arkv-o1n it's the truth 😂
Well no cause other western artists have fandom names like Little Monsters - Lady Gaga, KatyCats- Katy Perry, Navy- Rihanna, Smilers - Miley Cyrus etc
I do like katseye and the other trainees music but idk why katseye is labeled k-pop. I understand the training is from the k-pop genre BUT the songs they have rn have no k just pop😅 I feel like they should say they wanna make the “first” global girl group. It reminds me of fifth harmony but more aesthetic.
Allen like you said they don’t have a “theme” and that is a part of k-pop. And we NEED to talk about the sexualizing yoonchen (not the company the fans) its gotten to a point where when I see comments like that I go out of my way to tell them she’s a MINOR they just reply “how old is she…oh just a few years”
Nobody is labeling KATSEYE as K-Pop. From the beginning it was said it would be girl global pop group but with korean training. They were never labeled as K-Pop not even by their own companies.
@@brandonx543 they said “we are going to make a global k-pop group.” A direct quote but okay
@@Toxica_Jade666 I vividly remember them saying " we want to take the k out of kpop, and make it global". But hey, I could be wrong.
@@COOL-CAT_00 i remember that but they still are advertising as k-pop (and ik im no one but just a conversation yk) if you were to wanna take the k out of k-pop why are the hire ups still calling them a k-pop group (yes ik they are Korean themselves)
I like the fact that Netflix showed how hard they worked to become Katseye but it was just for a year or so, but we all know how korean kpop group spend years and years. I wish them all the best but it's gonna be very tough and will take many years to get to the top level - I have seen how NOW UNITED grew but still struggled .
Saying that they want to create the biggest girl group in the world, that’s where I closed the door. The chance for that to happen is at 1 percent with katseye especially if they want to compete with Kpop girl groups( newjeans,Aespa, Babymonster, le sserafim all of them has bigger fanbase) and don’t forget the Queens ( blackpink and twice) are still there and you are promoting in Kpop territory I understand touch is popping rightnow because everything new people get connect with it but it’s hard for them to stay, so they need to do something and come out of that shadow if they want to compete with those other groups I said on the top in terms of sells, concert, streams and views, cause that’s what they said as success
this is such a pointless comment lol. Saying they want to make the biggest X in the world is such a classic statement in reality TV. Like no duh they know they probably won't be the #1 in the world. It's just a thing people say
And the crazy thing is, you don’t know that. KATSEYE is extremely popular right now, and they are not just appealing to a korean audience. They have done showcases everywhere, they were just in the Philippines and their debut music video was filmed in Colombia. They are NOT K-POP.
people can’t have goals anymore? lol and how do you know if the next big girl group will be from kpop, katseye has potential of becoming the next big thing the group is very talented.
Lol they have high chance to be on top global market than aespa, newjeans, leseffaeem baby mons aswell people don't want to stuck with kpop they wanted their own global group which makes them feel it's theirs and katseye has high chances to be on global level than any kpop ggs because of their diversity and they are western group and their market is bigger than kpop for real hybe wanted to show their training and development with western group that's how it poped that's what it makes different than any kpop ggs hard to stay😂just by their one single album they are under top 120 on billboard charts, 10.5 million monthly listeners just by 3 months of debut western world wanted the group that works and train like kpop methods but just kpop groups trying to be western katseye has large way of opportunities than any of kpop ggs in that note they'll be more popular in one year just wait to be on billboard is not easy for kpop groups lol getting popular in Korea and kpop fans adn be on top western market is different so katseye aiming for that where so much group you mentioned are dieing to be on charts
Entering kpop territory 😂😂 fool have you seen how nobody is complaining when that nonsensical groups try to enter us market they even got awards for being so called biggest groups 😂😂
