The drums on this fucking album are so nasty. They just beat you on the head with a baseball bat. The fuzz just rips you ribcage open, the bass shatters your bones into fine dust. This really is THE heaviest album on earth

As someone who loves this album through and through, I agree that it's not love at first listen. I listened to it once, felt intrigued; went back to it a second time, didn't quite get it, but then... There just came a moment when 'it hit'. And since then I say that it's one of the best things that came from the "alternative" 90s.

I made a comment around two years ago, when I just started getting into them, and since then, my tastes have changed quite a lot. Here is my ranking of the albums now: 16. Greed (3/10) 15. Holy Money (3+/10) 14. The Burning World (6/10) 13. Love Of Life (6/10) 12. Cop (7-/10) 11. My Father Will Guide Me Up a Rope to the Sky (7/10) 10. The Great Anihilator (7+/10) 9. Filth (7+/10) 8. White Light From The Mouth Of Infinity (8/10) 7. leaving meaning. (8+/10) 6. Children Of God (9-/10) 5. Soundtracks For The Blind (9/10) 4. To Be Kind (9/10) 3. The Seer (9+/10) 2. The Beggar (9+/10) 1. The Glowing Man (9+/10) I might update this as I listen to their live catalogue and EPs. I absolutely love Swans, they have become my favourite band, and seeing them live last week changed my life. Much love!

I think I have a higher appreciation for The Top. Wailing Wall, Shake Dog Shake, Caterpillar, Piggy in the Mirror are so interesting and paved the ground for the mixture of pop/dark/psychedelic done on head on the door and KMKMKM. I agree with the transitional element mentioned. The top is best enjoyed after a joint honestly, and you have to be in an angry mood. I find it as intense as Pornography. Great episode guys!

The "gibberish" lyrics...lol... it actually has a technical, linguistic term: it is called Glossolalia. Just so you know. (Also, Elizabeth Fraser is the greatest vocalist of all time, IMHO). :)

Red Shoes is her weakest album in my opinion, so I agree with you. Lionheart I think is an excellent album, whether it was rushed or not. Has 2 or 3 amazing songs and the rest of it is very solid, in some ways it's better than her debut album, The Kick Inside. I'd give Lionheart at least 8 out of 10.

    • @malvanlondon8683

I usually listen to The Kick Inside and Lionheart together these days - as that combo plays like a great double album.

When anything by Cocteau Twins is uploaded onto TH-cam, this huge invisible army of devotees always begin to appear, as if out of nowhere, and it's very life-affirming to know that Liz and Robin and Simon and Will are forever immortalised by this force, so they never really ended at all, they simply became absorbed by them and then carried onward.

I do not know about changing my life, but my life would have been different if i had not listened to Spirit of Eden, at least once a month since release. Same with Laughing Stock, but i got my initiation, to this part of Talk Talk, with Spirit of Eden. Still think the opening lines of New Grass might be the best lyrics of all time.. “Lifted Up Reflected in returning love you sing” Absolutely hits me..

One of these slightly inebriated, hot summer night questions, that always pops up: If i woke up, mid examination, on an alien craft, and they demanded i justified the whole of human existence, what piece of music would i ask them to listen to? Still undecided, but probably something from Laughing Stock or Spirit of Eden, then again; Vaughan Williams’s 5 Symphony, especially the Romanza, is also a contender 😊

One group that combines the dreampop/shoegaze sound with trip-hop elements is SPC ECO. Also see the great 1996 album by Hooverphonic, 'A New Stereophonic Sound Spectacular.' It contains elements of both as well. I've been a Cocteau Twins fan for almost 40 years. Bought the 'Aikea-Guinea' EP in 1985 on a whim and have never looked back.

Lowest Common Denominator is such a perfect track; it's the one I always come back to on this album. I was lucky enough to see Unwound live this year (minus the original bassist, of course, RIP), and it was the highest energy show I've ever been to. One of my top 3 favorite bands ever, for sure.

If you fellows want a new sound, may I suggest, "Pylon," and their album "Chain." 1990. Another one I may have listened to in Iraq. Pylon came out of Athens, GA in the same span of years as R.E.M. and the B-52's.

@@shal6401 It's odd because when I got back, I stopped listening to contemporary music. I got hooked on swing, big band, jazz and classical. For some reason, say 10 years ago I started listened to them again. It did jog in memory events and images that I had tried to suppress. I was a medic and drove a M113. I had hooked up my Awai Walkman to the battery of the M113, so I didn't need AA batteries. This was 1991. Her vocals affected me as notes of liquid beauty.

Don’t know if it’s mentioned later but the trip hop comparison is quite apt because Elizabeth Fraser, the Cocteau Twins singer, is featured on 3 different songs on Massive Attack’s “Mezzanine”
