A few sounds from Oberheim Matrix 6r including unison sound. There is a tiny bit of reverb just to give a bit of space but no delay, the LFOs on this synth make it sound like its going through a delay pedal. I absolutely love the sound of this synth, would love to see an A/B with an OBX or a new OB6.

This is so worth it. You can change out the firmware to make it do all sorts of things. And if you have a Retrokits RK008, you can edit parameters on the polymux without even needing a computer through using loopback w/ MIDI
hoping to see Retrokits rk002 firmware update to support TWO separate parts ( twice 4-note polyphony ), leveraging more channels on the Digitakt 2 !!

Greeat examples! So do you just insert both ends of the cable into the digitakt? Or do you need another interafce or something?
Yes, you can! You could also use this cable with an external MIDI keyboard, but part of the fun is using Digitakt’s own MIDI sequencing capabilities, as shown here

I think the important step that you didn't spell out is that once you've enabled Program Change messages on your desired MIDI track (FUNC + encoder D on the SRC page), that encoder controls the amount of polyphony. You did demo changing the polyphony, but not how to enable that. Hope this helps anyone trying to replicate this setup.
Are you using any sort of LFO tricks to make the unison not sound all phased out? And how do you turn on mono mode???
I have two problems before I can pull this off: 1. My MIDI ports are already occupied; I guess I could use a pair of MIDI splitters to allow the necessary MIDI cabling to happen (if I understand correctly, one connects the RK-002 in loopback mode). 2. My RK002 is programmed for a different instrument (Korg Volca Sample 2), so I'm going to have to reprogram it with the Digitakt firmware. Do you know if I can use the DT itself as the MIDI interface for that purpose?
Note to future self: use your Blokas Midihub to reprogram your RK-002.

Hey Andy, really like what you're able to make with the Matrix 6! I have a Matrix 1000 myself and I've been wanting to try out the Matrix 6 factory banks to see what I can make from the patches there. However, the only way I've found to load those is through some old mp3 recordings of casette backups, which can only be loaded onto a Matrix 6 or 6r, so if possible would you be able to help out with this? If you could load the banks from the mp3 files and them convert them into syx files that'd be very helpful!
I came to a point where I used only oscillator one in unison mode. That got rid of the bad chorus/flanger sort of sound.
So nice! I am looking for a polyphonic sampler for live band use. The sample playback engine in my Nord Electro 5 is too limited. The added cost of a Nord Stage is silly in my opinion. I didn’t gel with the Akai MPC One. I love Elektron stuff, but never really pulled the trigger because of the lack of polyphony. When I heard about the RK002 cable I was somewhat intrigued, but presumed it would be too much trouble needing to load multiple tracks for each sound and that when changing cutoff, I would need to do that for each individual track every time. In your video, it seems that changing sounds for each track is actually very easy and that you’re able to control release, cutoff, etc of all tracks simultaneously. Is that correct? That would be great. BTW, would you be willing to make available some of your Oberheim samples/sounds? This is almost exactly the type of sound I am after.
Can you show how it work with an external Keyboard? Would be great

Bought a Matrix 1000 installed the tauntek firmware and will order the Stereoping controller which is a brilliant piece of kit. Wicked sounds ! Midi mono.

Hey Andy ! Great video ! I am fighting with my stereoping controller, it does not work. matrix is in firmware 2,13. Where does your 2,15 comes from ? tauntek ? glibly ? and one more thing; I love the sounds in your matrix ! would please send them to me ?
Hi mate, yes you have to upgrade firmware. I got mine on ebay, I think tauntek, will have a check, cost around £15. controller works perfect after upgrade. Do you have m6r or m1000? I will try and send sounds over next week.

Fantastic choice, such amazing sounding instrument. I have a Tom Oberheim sem pro but actually prefer the sound of the matrix. Stereoping controller totally opens the m1000 up in terms of programming. These synths sound way better than most modern stuff although would really love to hear a new ob6 compared with matrix 6 / 1000

Hey Andy, I’ve just bought one and am having a bit of trouble getting audio from the unit with my Arturia Keystep Pro. I’ve tried changing the midi channels on the keystep as it’s default is 10 but still nothing. Any suggestions?
Hi Angus, have you got it working yet? I use key step with mine, works fine. Make sure matrix is not in split mode, make sure midi channel matches key step channel and use left/ mono audio output. Really powerful synth. I’m hopefully going to make some more handy tips vids soon.
Thanks for that, it actually turned out that the main serial cable had come loose inside the unit so I had to open it up and discovered this, plugged it back in which fixed this issue :)
I just returned to your channel to write to you, I think you should try the DSI Tetra. Compared to my M1000 they sound quite similar, I mean not exactly but it's the closest thing I have heard. They have much of the same structure and I think perhaps also the CEM's are closely related, just a though for you in case you feel adventurous. The Tetra have a couple of nice sub oscillators as well, it's something about the tone and the way the oscillators work together

Yes you can, digitakt is incredibly powerful machine. Expensive though!

Hi Julian. I have some nice synths and sample directly from them. Oberheim SEM, Oberheim Matrix 6r, korg ms 10, Behringer Cat. I also have a Roland boutique jx03 and to be honest this sounds as good as the other more collectible proper analogues that I have. The digitakt is a great instrument especially with addition of rk002 cable. You can also get amazing results by just sampling random stuff from TH-cam and mangling it up, old nature documentaries from 1970s or old tv idents for example. I don’t ever use sample packs as I prefer to make my own samples from random stuff. Also recording random stuff from around the house or outdoors is fun. Checkout Dave Mech channel, he does some really interesting stuff with digitakt.
Basically I think a digitakt plus 1 inexpensive, interesting synth like say Behringer Cat or Roland jx03 is all you need to have a lot of fun making music.

Hi Paap. I’m pretty sure it is. I haven’t tried yet but there are lots of posts on Elektronauts forum regarding rk002 and it seems that midi through is still usable. You can also play digitakt polyphonically from an external keyboard like atruria key step.
Hi, actually I just tried midi thru and couldn’t get it to work. It’s not an issue for me but might be a nuisance at some point. Others on Elektronauts forum state that it should work.

Hi Kesniel, I would definitely recommend getting rk002 cable but perhaps learn the digitakt for a while first then add the cable a bit later on. Digitakt is such a powerful machine, you will be able to sequence the Opsix polyphonically but I am finding that playing poly samples on Digitakt just sounds so good.

Hi Fabio, yes Matrix 6 is amazing synth.I have owned since early 90s. I have firmware 2.15 so can use with stereoping controller. I programmed most of my patches without the stereoping though. I can email you wav file of my patches if you like so you can see how I programmed the unison patches. I think these patches will work with any firmware.

Hi Daniel, I had matrix 6r for years and programmed sounds from the front panel, just recently got the stereoping controller and it really brings the synth to life being able to control envelopes and filter in real time. It’s an amazing sounding synth, once you know the programming tricks it’s pretty quick to get great sounds. Trouble is they have gone up in price as people realise how good they are. Very good build quality too.

Yeah, underrated synth. Once you know a few programming tricks those fat sounds come flying out! Unique sounding beast.
