    I bought 5 from Lowes in the DFW area last year and 4 didn't make it. The lone survivor is barely hanging on. They were planted in a row about 3 feet away from the front of my east-west facing home and get the most intense summer sun between 3-6. Do you think it may be overwater or underwater? How often do you water yours? Technically variegated plants are prone to damage when exposed to intense sunlight and these have white new growths.

    can you go over more of the design of the catio? I am going to be doing something very similar coming off a porch. 11' wide by 32' long. Did you dig post holes and put those posts in the ground?

    • @matticus6339
      @matticus6339 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Also more detail on what you did for the roof support. looks like 2x6x12s then perpendicular braces between them?

    • @blazinblooms5785
      @blazinblooms5785 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@matticus6339 I dug post holes every 8 feet, with horizontal supports in between that were not dug into the ground. I used 2X4 for the roof, 2X6 would of been better for preventing sagging and warping. I nailed supports perpendicular to the joist to support the wire fencing on top.

    My all stars this year were Serena Angelonia and 'Summer Jewel Red' salvia. The summer jewel salvia I grew from seed (super easy even though the seeds are tiny) and it was covered in flowers and pollinators from late spring until now. Supposedly it is a perennial in zone 8 but I'm sure it dropped so many seeds that it will come back next year either way. I bought 2 flats of the Angelonia but you can also grow it from seed (I tried but had marginal success which is why I bought some more). It bloomed from early summer all the way to now and is a sometimes perennial in our area but also drops tons of seeds so should come back either way. Obviously lantana (new gold, miss huff, and the purple trailing variety) did fine this year despite the heat. All my paniculata hydrangeas (little lime, limelight, limelight prime, and moon dance) performed poorly despite being all stars in prior years... just too hot for them apparently. Abelias did ok (rose creek, kaleidoscope, radiance, twist of lime) but underperformed compared to prior years. The abelias did look great once it cooled down and we got some rain. Roman Candle Podocarpus is also looking great although it does best in part sun, especially with protection form afternoon sun. Rock rose (pavonia lasiopetala) didn't notice the heat at all either and performed well. All my profusion zinnia did great, most of them I grew from seed (via park seed, which also has the summer jewel red salvia). Belleza dark pink gaura also did very well... it is a short lived perennial but easy to propagate. The foliage is very showy and it produces tons of flowers as well. Also gets much bigger than the 1-2 feet claim on the label, mine grew to nearly 5 feet from the tiny 3.5 inch pots I got on clearance at Lowes last year.

    Just wondering if you guys have tried smooth hydrangeas and I even have a hard time with oak leaf ones but I’m still trying I’ve been wondering buying all kinds so last month I bought 1 Incrediball and 3 annebelle ones Have you by chance know about how they will do So Far so they have not died yet and they are supposed to naturalize they were cheaper and I don’t have to buy any more right now but I want to still try for the panicule golly I wrote a letter

    • @blazinblooms5785
      @blazinblooms5785 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's the heat that kills Hydrangeas in our area. Hydrangeas need just a little bit of morning sun and no more. Anymore than that during the summer and they will burn up. We hope to increase the shade in our garden, so we can try more hydrangea varieties. Best of luck.
