Thanks. My long time hobby is to design unofficial but realistic Lego versions of real world's transmissions. My education in mechanical engineering helps and Lego transmission skills have developed during years. So I try to help Lego MOC builders to get more realistic Lego vehicles by offering ideas for that difficult transmission part. TH-cam is full of beautiful and advanced Lego MOC trucks and other vehicles but realistic Lego transmissions are very rare. 🤔😀

@@A77uros I can relate! Often when I want to make a proof of concept for a mechanical idea, I reach for my Legos :D. BTW, your site content is amazing. I feel like I'm looking at a lost scroll from the Library of Alexandria when reading through it. I'm master of science in mechanical engineering (struggled heavily in my studies but finally finished it) and did my master thesis about vehicle transmissions. So I use my education to Lego transmissions and try to design unofficial but realistic Lego versions of real world's transmissions. I started my Lego transmission hobby about 2009 so skills have developed during years. 😀

Lego model and pictures are created with program group called LDraw (modeling with MLCad and pictures with LDView), info sheet with ratios and shift pattern and other texts for pictures are simply created with Paint, and slide show from pictures is created with Iobit iTop Video Editor. And this my original and unofficial Lego design, if you see this exact design outside Lugnet pages or TH-cam someone has copied this. 🤔😀

(Sorry I needed Google Translator...) I'm afraid I don't have enough time to make building instructions for these transfer cases. But pictures of these transfer cases are available in section "C. Transfer Cases", page www.lugnet.com/~3813/gearbox1 (ad blocker recommended). Loading and looking all pictures at the same time show current transfer case in different angles so they should show how to build it. Hopefully this helps a little. 🤔 But these only transfer cases ideas, you need to build main gearbox and whole lego vehicle around them by yourself. 😀

Nice! If I remember this transmission right, conversion can be done quite straight-forward, there are no special gear pairs. Can you upload pics or TH-cam video or slide show about your design? I'm curious to see it. PS. While you have transmission now you need lego Volvo truck. 😀

It's old 24 teeth crown gear. It's mainly for bevel gear pairs but here it's to make sliding gear shifting easier than in normal spur gear pair. Can be replaced with normal 24 teeth gear but shifting to low can be more difficult. 🙂

Thank you. I was quite complicated to design this while I couldn't build it because I don't have enough studless lego parts. I'm so old that I'm more familiar with old school lego bricks (check for example slide shows about "Lego 4x2 truck 16-speed" from my TH-cam videos). 😀

Nice. My lego transmission ideas are playable but they always need modifying before they fit to lego vehicles. So I usually give only transmission ideas where creative lego moc builders can start from. 😀

Design is brand new but it looks old while I'm not young anymore and have used parts I'm familiar with. 😃 (But there are also modern 20 tooth clutch gear and 28 tooth gear in this transmission.) Actually design should be possible to build with modern studless frame, but overdrive top gear's 16-8-12 gear train must be replaced with 16-16-12 gear train and use special 1,75 stud axle base (put technic cross block on the axle 0,25 studs away from half bush). 🤔

Yeah, it's high speed motor with very little torque so top gear needs total ratio about 86:1 for smooth driving. Actually, while ratios are copied from real ZF transmission whole low range is too slow for this lego truck. Lowest gear you usually need is 4H (direct range change from top gear 8H). But you can say you have real truck transmission in your lego truck. 😃

@@A77uros as someone who struggles with building Lego transmissions, I am really impressed that you built an 18 speed with its real life counterparts ratios.

@@jjlane9191 earlier university studies in automotive engineering allow me "weird" hobbies like lego transmissions... 😄 If you need lego transmission ideas it's worth to take closer look to my Lugnet profile or TH-cam channel. This way you get halfway through when you don't need lego ratio calculations, only problem is to fit lego transmission and vehicle together.

Unfortunately no, I don't have usable equipment for movies. Digi camera I used for this pics has quite low quality movie recorder. 🙁 But I can say that top speed is in middle range: not the slowest and not fastest lego vehicle. And while ratios are copied from real heavy duty truck transmission first gear is very slow. 😃

Go kart, are they those small racing cars, which are usually your first racing cars to get familiar with tracks and racing? Unfortunately I don't know enough about their transmissions. 🤔 But if you know about go kart gearboxes and need more info about lego you can check my tutorials in my lugnet profile (link is above). After "table of contents" and "quick links" there's section "notes", my lego tutorials (5-speed, 12-speed & lego gear pairs) are located there. So, I can give only more info but not full gearbox. 🙂

Do you mean that you want to build lego gearbox without those red transmission driving rings and dark gray clutch gears? Then it's worth to check section "R. Sequential Transmissions" in my Lugnet profile: www.lugnet.com/~3813/. It contains some personal car, truck and tractor transmissions that use sliding axle shifting method.

Thanks! My goal was to follow ratios and gear order of real transmission without getting too complex lego design. 😀

Gear order is C1-C2-1L-1H-2L-2H-3L-3H-range_change-4L-4H-5L-5H-6L-6H. Crawler gears C1 and C2 are main gears 1 and 2 when low range and splitter's crawler position are selected. Gears 1-3 are main gears 1-3 with low range selected and gears 4-6 are same main gears but high range selected. L and H are splitter's low and high. Ratios are listed in last slide (start at 1:33). So it's like normal 12-speed range-splitter truck transmission (2x3x2 design) but with two special crawler gears. Does this help?

You can check gear ratios and gear steps from info sheet at the end of this clip 1:53 (light blue background). While this is light truck transmission gear steps are larger than in typical personal car transmission.

You're welcome... Now you need a lego truck where to use this transmission, for example old Volvos had 8-speed transmission. 😉

If you need more info about lego and real transmissions, you can make TH-cam search "ari's lego gearbox tutorial". You should find 5-speed and 12-speed lego tutorial clips, they'll give some useful information about transmissions like ratio calculation, power flow etc. :-)

Nice to know that someone builds my lego transmissions. This one keeps things simple and compact but still realistic. :-)

Unfortunately used XS(8)-Mu(20) and Su(12)-S(20) gear pairs can be only supported by studless frame so brick frame is not possible with this lego transmission. :-( All in all it's difficult to build lego 8-speed sequential truck transmission that has realistic ratios so that's why my design often have 14 teeth gear wheels. Lego 8-speed with less realistic ratios will be easier.

Well, 6-speed single sequential gearbox is not usable with legos, but I have an idea of 6+3R-speed sequential tractor transmission (3 main gears plus ranges high, low and reverse). It will take some time to finish it. But meanwhile you can check chapter "R.14. 12-speed truck" in www.lugnet.com/~3813/. Without splitter you get 6 gears (3x2) with large steps (allows low speeds) or without range-change unit 6 gears with small steps (no low speeds). Easiest is to drop out splitter. Does this help? :-)

@@A77uros that helps quite a bit! I did make a couple of your 12 speeds, I actually have your 14 speed still built, I can just drop out the splitter and have just about a 6 or 8 speed, but that 6+3R sounds good!

Unfortunately I don't have enough legos or spare time to build my every lego transmission idea so I have mainly modeled designs for others to build and test. And my camera is not very handy for video recording.
