    I can see white corners on your paper cards, also some of them had edge snow flaking. Centering was the biggest issue I saw with you getting 9's...I think you got tunnel vision on looking for 1 thing and missed some of the obvious...I make that same mistake too...I end up after its slabbed seeing a lot of issues I missed...You really have to be confident with paper cards. The edges and corners will get you every time...Panini chrome baseball cards are notorious for surface issues, you may not be able to see it right away, but a couple of yours had print/roller lines. keep on ripping, dont get down on it! I have been ripping/collecting/grading/flipping/selling since 1988, i still make mistakes...1993 Upper Deck was Jeters Rookie Card FYI...Good Luck on your journey!!

    2 points.....1996 upper deck is not a jeter rookie, and 1996 also is not vintage. Cards are not like cars where after 20 years it becomes vintage. Vintage was an era, roughly 1940-1980.

    I didn't look at the scans of every card, but of the ones I did look at that had a low grade, I'd say the common factor was corner damage. There were several cards which had multiple corners with white showing. The Mike Trout /99, for instance, came in as an 8. I'd say that's because of the bottom edge and corners on the front. Both corners show white and the bottom edge has some minor wear. Wherever you have a solid color like that red, and there ends up being some of the white base color peaking through, PSA's going to hammer you. The Jackson Merrill, which was a PSA 6 was off centered left to right on the front, but the biggest issue I saw was on the back. The bottom corners both show white. In fact, the bottom right looks like the damage was so bad that top layer of ink is missing, at least in the scan on PSA's website.

    Do you inspect the corners and edges of your cards using a 10x loupe? If not, using one might explain some of the wtf grades. Hopefully, your next sub goes better for you. Take care! #TheHobbyist

    90s basketball is my favorite. You're overlooking flaws on cards, my friend. I took a look at the scans SGC shows on their site and here are a few cards I took a look at with my notes. 1991-92 Fleer Dikembe Mutombo SGC 7 The grade was warranted. The top to bottom centering was approximately 32% (top)/68% (bottom). The bottom right corner was well worn with a lot of white showing. The top red border has two visible print defects which are commonly referred to as fish eyes in the hobby. They're two circular dots which look like the eyes of a fish, hence the name. The bottom left corner and bottom edge has a fair bit of white showing, indicating some wear or damage. There's also a vertical scratch to the right of Derrick Coleman's head. It could be on the case. It's hard to say. 1992-93 UD McDonald's Michael Jordan SGC 5 I couldn't see anything from the scans, so I imagine it's a surface-related issue, such as a wrinkle. I personally submitted 34 copies of Shaq's card from this set just two weeks ago and every copy graded 9, 9.5, or 10. So I do know this set well. There has to be a surface issue, likely on the back. I can't say for sure without seeing the card in person. 1991-92 Fleer Michael Jordan #220 SGC 8 The grade of an 8 was warranted. The right edge has a couple of spots where white is showing, indicating some damage. It's on the bottom half of the card. Also, the card is off centered, left to right. You want that right, blue border to be a similar width as the width between the left edge of the card and the name of the player. In this case, there's a very narrow gap between Michael Jordan's name and the left side of the card. I hope you find this useful. Good luck with your next submission.

    So more you grade. The more you look at your cards and others to match how they receive their grades, the better you get in time. It is a learning process . I started my experience nearly 30 years ago. So I saw watching your video centering issues and some corners. Next today, graders and tech. Nice cards harder than before old wax stuff gets it by cardboard imperfections. Like tiny small indents . All a learning process . You will get it. Also, yes, colors issues on the card can be a hit on grades. You did well. Nice video

    You also have to consider the surface on cards. Any kind of scratches or marks brings the grade down. Cards in the 80s & 90s were generally of poor quality. I think SGC is usually very accurate.

    When I pre-grade my cards, I do it when the cards are outside of plastic protection so there's no penny sleeve, top loader, or Card Saver distorting my view. With a lamp and a magnification of 8x, I look at the surface, tilting the card every which way trying to find dents, print lines, or other defects. I like the magnification mostly for finding small fish eye print defects which tend to show up on my 80s and 90s cards. My aging eyes struggle to pick them up on their own sometimes.

    I'm certainly not saying they are inconsistent, but when submitting to PSA look especially hard at the corners. Nobody grades corners tougher than PSA. I used to bust junk wax & submit to make a few bucks. They certainly grade harder now than a decade ago, but corners are the big thing.

  • @JChamberlin
    @JChamberlin 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

    I mostly grade late 80s-mid-90s cards so those are the only ones I feel comfortable commenting on. SGC probably did grade the vintage cards well; you just likely missed some things. SGC has a terrific reputation for vintage. The cards you graded that I typically grade, I immediately spotted flaws. The '94 UD Jason Kidd had numerous corners. The back lower left looked bad before you even picked it up and flipped it over. The front corners were bad too. I don't know if you missed that or if SGC damaged them. The Topps Shaq was at the least off center with the bottom having a notably larger border. 1990 Fleer Jordan was quite OC left to right and there were at least two yellow print defects on the front (one on his shorts and one on the name plate area). Plus the scan of the back of the card made it look like the top right of the card may have some discoloration. It could just be a bad photo/scan. It's hard to say without the card in hand. 1990 Hoops Jordan was definitely OC top to bottom. I could see it from the back with there being a notably larger border at the top compared to the bottom. If you don't have a centering tool or ruler, I suggest buying one. It'll help immensely. Grading is still stupidly expensive to waste money grading junk wax cards and get 7s, 8s, and 9s. You need 10s to make it worth your investment, frankly.

    • @Cardcrushers
      @Cardcrushers 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Really appreciate your feedback , i must need to look much closer , you made some excellent points but also some were a mystery

    • @Cardcrushers
      @Cardcrushers 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      How many points do you think they take off for centering? Or corners ?

    • @JChamberlin
      @JChamberlin 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@Cardcrushers Yeah, some are a mystery. It's difficult for me to comment on cards I'm seeing on a video as opposed to having them in-hand. I suspect some of the flaws you are encountering which are resulting in 5s and 6s are surface-related. I noticed in a video from you where you're using high magnification to look for surface flaws. In my experience, magnification isn't as useful as having a good lamp on your desk. The trick is to tilt the card and have the light hit the card at just the right angle to show the surface. It's amazing how many cards have fingernail-like dents, creases, or wrinkles in them. They don't always go all the way through the card. People tend to miss them when they're on the back of the card. We instinctively spend more time examining the front of our cards than the back so people miss them.

    • @JChamberlin
      @JChamberlin 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@Cardcrushers It's impossible for me to answer this because it depends on how bad each is. It's not as simple as saying "oh, this card is off centered, so I'll deduct one point". In reality, a card that has 60/40 front centering is going to receive a higher grade than a card with 65/35 centering, assuming there are no additional flaws. Corners are the same. Sometimes a corner will have just a touch of white, while others will be so beat that it looked like a six-year-old took a pair of scissors to it and tried to give the card rounded corners. The grade depends on how bad each specific flaw of the card is, not so much the quantity of flaws. One of the things I recommend to people is spending time on eBay. If you think a specific card of yours deserves a 9, look at what a PSA/SGC 9 actually looks like. How comparable are they? eBay photos won't typically show surface flaws like creases or dents, but you should still be able to see a card's centering, edges, and corners and get a feel for what a 9 actually looks like.

  • @JChamberlin
    @JChamberlin 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

    SGC doesn't grade old autos because they need to be authenticated. If I recall correctly, they used to a long time ago, either through someone in-house or a third party company. The only autos they deal with today are the newer ones where Panini, Topps, Upper Deck, etc have authenticated the autos. If you want the Jerry West auto graded, you'll have to send it to a company like PSA and have the autograph authenticated by them.
