Bienvenidos! This channel started as a way for me to share videos of my local train club and Steelers-themed model railroad, but over time shifted more toward documenting the real-life railroading found in Pittsburgh, around the US, and occasionally abroad. You'll find several O loco reviews, O, HO and G layout videos, clips of light rail trolley wraps, standard Class I and Amtrak fare in multiple cities, and the storied shortlines of Pittsburgh and a few other places. I'm not here to make money, this channel is a way for me to share unusual, anachronistic, or occasionally bland trains that I have time to see.
If you subscribe to me, I might subscribe to you. Leave a comment and say hi, and I'll check out your work!
I post once a week (Fridays 12:00 PM), so I try to put time and effort into those videos which I do post.

[4K60] Smoking it up: Hocking Valley 701 Leads Excursion Trains on the Scenic Railroad
After finding myself in the Hocking Valley region of Ohio for a family reunion, I discovered that nearby, the @hockingvalleyscenicrailway1014 offered scenic train rides along the Hocking River from Nelsonville as far as the outskirts of Logan, OH. I decided to pay a visit and chase the day's two excursions along this former C&O coal route, which today were led by one of several Paducah rebuilt-Geeps I saw that year. The train crew were all railfans and excited to see me out, and engineer Mark gave a particularly great show with the former Sprint cable GP10M.

[4K60] Wheeling and Lake Erie's Mifflin Branch and Mingo Yard Action
มุมมอง 25921 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา
This video combines two separate outings. First, while waiting for NS C54 to start their day, @conwayproductions and I observed Wheeling's 218 (Brewster - Rook) drop two units, which a local crew then used to drop stone cars down "The Slide" into Mingo Jct. yard. The second day was a weekend visit to Rook Yard, where an unknown 61x-series crew headed light out of the yard to pick up two gondola...
[4K60] The List: Providence & Worcester Super 7 on CSO-3
มุมมอง 14814 วันที่ผ่านมา
While a lot of attention has gone to the Super 7s of the Ohio Central (mostly because Ohio and Pittsburgh foamers are nuts), there was one lone B23-S7 assigned to the Connecticut Southern, and which mostly ran on the CSO-3. In March 2023, I combined a trip to see a friend at UConn and cousins with a chase of CSO-3, hosted by the excellent photographer Dave Blaze ( DaveBlazePhotograp...
[4K60] MDDE Worton "Rocket" Part 3 of 3: the Run to Townsend
มุมมอง 11721 วันที่ผ่านมา
The "epic" conclusion to a rainy afternoon chase of Maryland & Delaware's Worton job with Black River & Western SW1200 1202. This part constitutes the actual 'rocket' portion of the trip, on the 40-mph stretch from Massey to the DCR interchange at Townsend. With the condition of the roads and my inexperience with this chase, I didn't clean up, but it was a good first attempt. 1202 was on loan f...
[4K60] Ohio Central B23-S7s 4094 and 4099 on the CNL-1
มุมมอง 204หลายเดือนก่อน
Of all the much-hyped and much-shot B23-S7s (also known as B23-7Rs or Super 7s), 4094 was probably my favorite because of its peeling black-and-orange paint that reflected its tumultuous ownership history: Monongahela, then Conrail, then (briefly) NS, then New Castle Industrial, Ohio Central, and finally G&W. As of this writing, while the last two Super 7s in service still work the CNL-1, the j...
[4K60] Youngstown Belt Action Around Brier Hill Yard, Feat. the Ohio Central GP11 duo
มุมมอง 198หลายเดือนก่อน
At the time I recorded this video, and until shortly after I edited the video, the Youngstown Belt's pair of Ohio Central-painted GP11s were slated for scrapping sometime this year. Since then, informal sources have suggested these units are sticking around, through some deal or another. I'm glad they are, but it kinda made this annoying day unnecessary; I ping-ponged between the two OC jobs an...
[4K60] MDDE Train Runs in Reverse for 8 miles...Last Gasps of Fall on the Federalsburg line
มุมมอง 344หลายเดือนก่อน
I took advantage of geography and shot some trains in some of the last areas to see the leaves change each fall. On this day, after working industries in Federalsburg, the crew was forced to run in reverse the entire way to the DCR interchange in Seaford; DCR was upgrading the yard tracks, and the normal runaround was out-of-service. While not a particularly long day, as the crew said, between ...
[4K60] Tenth Anniversary: The Best* Catches, 2014 - 2024
มุมมอง 133หลายเดือนก่อน
This final video answers the question: What am I proudest of having seen in ten years or so of being trackside? This video highlights trains that were one-offs or very unlikely to happen again, and shots that may happen again, but were so 'epic' that I had to include them. Like all of these ten-year videos, it suffers from recency bias, partly because my early camera work is so poor, partly bec...
Tenth Anniversary Series: Best shots of real trains, from Virginia to Pittsburgh

I'll readily admit my choice of composition is frequently...unusual, and often bad. That said, there were a few times, mostly in the last three years, where I feel like a decent job at it. I said there would be a shitpost or two, and here it is....I am by no means nostalgic for Dash 9s, there are still hundreds roaming around on both BNSF and NS. That said, they were the largest class of locomotives still in the old Thoroughbred paint, which was always nice to see. This video is potentially part 1 of 2*, and for technical reasons focuses on only the Dash 9s I caught leading after...
Tenth Anniversary Series: Best of Crews and Scanner Conversations
มุมมอง 3162 หลายเดือนก่อน
As y'all are well aware, scanners are a great tool for understanding what may be going on with some railroad operations, but for me, part of the enjoyment of having a scanner is being able to hear some of the often humorous, and occasionally schadenfreude-inducing, conversations between railroaders. This video showcases the best of these conversations, as well as some of the coolest crews I had...

Yeah yeah, minor spoilers, it's pretentious, but if if you're someone who cares and wants to see full-length videos of a chase before a compilation, there's a few chases from 2024 that won't come out until next year. This video is another snapshot of the real train action I've seen around Pittsburgh between 2021 and 2024. It's not all of my favorite shots of these lines (that's in a future vide...

October 2024 (specifically the 13th) marks ten years since I started publishing on TH-cam, with a 59 second clip of three O gauge trains at the D.A.R.E. Model Railroad clip that I posted because it exceeded the OGR Forum's size limit. Thanks Mike! In the early 1900s, the Pennsylvania Railroad looked to connect their Philadelphia and Erie main line to Pittsburgh with a secondary line that would handle only freight and take some pressure off the main line. This line, the Low Grade Secondary, extended from a connection with the P&E at Driftwood, PA, to Red Bank and a connection with the (original) Allegheny Valley Railroad. The...

This was one of the last solo runs for the unit, as the following week MDDE returned to service, and the 1202 was exchanged to DCR in April. After the runaround, I bumped my white ba...

[4K60] Union Pacific's Missouri-Kansas-Texas Heritage Unit on Norfolk Southern's H-line
That was a very nice catch on some Street running I was not aware of. Talk about the classic back alley look with the old siren the roof lines and old brick buildings plus the old Depot. This train would have passed by the area I usually watch them at in Milwaukee. This train originated at Tunnel City WI home of the last active RR tunnel in the state and the vast majority of production goes to PA & WV in 100 car trains with power setup two up front. It does rate quite a bit of foreign power add now KCS units. You picked a great Detour for the afternoon thanks for sharing
Thank you for watching Paul! The only reason we knew about the train was likely because folks out your way gave the initial head's up. The background is appreciated!
Interesting as it doesn't really even look like a steel processing plant but the coil cars give it away. Those driveways with the tracks what is indicative of how the rail system was at Allis Chalmers in West Allis WI and is either now torn down or converted to other usage. Poor old LTEX equipment sure looks rough even when they put new paint on it
That's a good observation! There's a portion of the building that has the requisite vents and more cupola-styled roof, but the rest of the shed looks like it's much newer build.
This opening shot is fantastic! Great video
Thank you! I know the rest of the video is kinda eh (I was back in a handheld mood by this point because I think my tripod was broken), but I'm glad you liked the Mingo shot.
What fun ❤😅
Great catch. Are all these empties to be loaded with brick?
I believe so, yes.
Long hood is the front.
It's true that LHF is forward for the locomotive, but the engine was shoving the train the entire way there, hence why I said reverse.
That Alco RS-3 has been repowered with an EMD prime mover. You can tell by the sound. Also, the Alco 244 engine had only a single exhaust stack. That old 244 engine was not one of Alco’s better designs.
Nice catches! I think mdde should acquire some more gp10's for freight and use the alcos for the festival's they have
As it stands, DCR/Carload Express has more than enough power, so chances are if the purchase is approved any new units will end up being MP15s. Personally I don't mind, I'll miss the RS-3ms, but the off-center headlights make the MP15s pretty funky, and a few have decent horns.
No coupler on the cab end?
Yep! I'm not sure anyone's ever heard why, but best guess is that it was either damaged or removed for space reasons; all the spurs at the facility, as you saw, are trailing, so they didn't need it.
This is the same railroad in the movie unstoppable right??thank u
Similar abbreviation, but no, the AWVR from unstoppable was fictional. There were a few scenes shot with Wheeling & Lake Erie locomotives, including some shot on the WE in West Virginia nearby, but not the AVR.
pitt rail fan... thank you for the great shots !!! i model the bprr/we/avr/ce and "youins" help a great deal !! i owe you a cold yuengling !!!
Glad you find my shots helpful! If you ever post videos of your layout it will be cool to see it.
@@pittsburghrailfan 10-4, prf !!! i have been to pittsburgh at least 30 times in my life, as i retired from westinghouse west valley and was sent there for teaching/training "stuff" for an entire 33 year career !!! its the best place to live on the planet... ab charles/primantis' "sammiches"/steelers/pirates/bobby rubinos, which is now gone, for what was some of the best bbq around !!! i can honestly say the folks there are some of the kindest in the world and took me to the igloo many times for penguins games and "lingers"... you are VERY fortunate to be living in that area of our country...please keep the videos coming and blessings to you,prf !!! denny
Ooh neat Iron Senergy repainted the Cumberland mine SD38s. Weird little disjointed rail operation, that one. Kind of surprised that mine is still running.
I don't think it was a full repaint, at least when I was there almost a year ago, they just put giant stickers on the side. You and me both, I know it's one of the bigger mines in the area, I'm still very curious why Iron Senergy bought the mine.
That K3LA on 9052 is gold!
Beautiful scenes, and I love those horns!
Love the old PREX geeps! Nice!
Thanks!
Very nice I remember those reroutes like it was yesterday.
Thanks Jacob! It would be nice to get back and shoot these signals again, even if C54 and C65 are now fully at night.
Very nice video, if you don’t mind me asking, what camera do you use?
Fuji XT-4, 16-80mm lens, Rode VideoMic NTG external microphone.
Nice to see MDDE pick up some more power! They actually needed another loco....if business is picking up for them perhaps they should consider purchasing some geep 38's and retire the old alco's.
Business seems to be OK, but the 1202 was just on short-term lease while both Massey RS-3ms were down, and the 1823 was needed for propane season.
@@pittsburghrailfan I like this railroad alot...they should consider getting some more power. I remember wen they had some f-7's
Nicely done!
Thank you!
Nice Video!!
Thank you!
How come that signal is not vertical?
I think that’s done by the manufacturer to indicate that it’s a position indicator signal and not a block or absolute signal; it only shows the switch alignment, not whether another train is present. The branch is unsignaled and controlled via requesting track warrants from the dispatcher.
Where is the Clairton Yard and what is its purpose and whom serviced?
Clairton, PA, it's Wheeling's eastern interchange with NS, from what I understand.
at what time did you see NRWO, im thinking of going to see it myself
I hate to say it, but if you look at the text in the video, there's timestamps for when I saw the train at each spot.
Ah! Millington! I was working as a contractor for Maryland SHA on the project to fix some of the drainage problem in that town. At the crossing you were standing at, catty-corner from you, is a rental property. Starting about 11:00 AM, the tenants stagger out, hang on the porch, drink, smoke and joke until after sundown. The Contractor was repairing the curb and sidewalk in front of the that building, they all just sat or leaned over the railing to watch. I also worked on a Sewage plant in Sudlersville, that you could see the tracks of that line from the job trailer. COVID ruined that sweet job I had, now every job since has been crappy temp position.
That job sounds fun, hopefully you find something more permanent soon!
My buddy's auto body shop is right by the Federalsburg headquarters, he hates that thing blowing the horn by his window every day but I love going up there to see and hear it.
With 100° heat, that scenery looks damn'd good right about now!
Definitely concur, it's a lot easier to keep warm then than keep cold right now!
Nice video
Thank you!
@@pittsburghrailfan you’re welcome
Great video! Say,what ever become of the gp10 they had? You dont see that amymore!?
It’s out in Selbyville on the Snow Hill line, so it’s a ways away and doesn’t run that often. I have a video of it coming out sometime in February or March of 2025, and I may see it again come falls
@@pittsburghrailfan so does selbyville/snow hill have their own shortline and what is it called or is that part of mdde?
Yep, it’s one of MDDE’s lines, still in the Veterans unit patch job over the W&W/BDRV markings.
@@pittsburghrailfan cool! Thanks!
@@thepozfromoz5166 And I just learned that the GP10 went to Massey today, as both of the RS3Ms used there are out-of-service. There's usually at least one crew running out of there at 7 am on weekdays this time of year.
My son is special needs and he loves trains 🚆🚂🚃🚄🚅🚇🚈🚉🚊🚝🚞🚋🛤 especially Alco's like all of those and he hopes that the former Relco HH660 #603 at 23:52 will be restored to operation if it has not been already.

Insanely Pittsburgh Railways here at Castle Shannon was ripped out as adding do to track gauge issues with the past Pittsburgh & Castle Shannon RR and the Pittsburgh & Southern there was a deadly Railroad war years ago.

Sick catches of Amtrak, MARC, & VRE in the DMV area. Also sick shots of MARC HHP-8s 4912 doing yard moves & leading MARC 440 to Baltimore & 4915 leading MARC #430 to Baltimore.
Do you know why AVR-3 is storing tanker cars in the Washington, PA siding I just saw a new batch today do you know why they are doing that during the late Winter or Spring
I'm assuming because it makes them money, and that's where they have space, there's not many other sidings on the railroad other than in Glenwood that they aren't using. At least back in January they were using the yard to store SPMX plastics hoppers.
It's definitely a remarkable train presentation !! Greetings from India.
Will WE still drop off natural gas cars for the AVR to pick up and will AVR take them to the siding for the B&P to take and will the AVR run light back
Yep, WE still drops off tank cars. Those run on AVR-3 or on an extra/AVR-5 to Glenwood, then relay up on the regular AVR-1 night freight that interchanges with B&P.
A beautiful winter morning, fascinating EBT equipment, and loads of hardy fans enjoying it all. I'm jealous! ❤😂
Good video.
I know how trains do take empty cars at night do you know way they made their local run at night to
AVR-3 ran at night because of the ballast train working during the day, if that's what you're asking.
Do you have any videos of AVR-3 coming at night in 2021 and them switching out the ballast cars at Tylerdale siding and by V-bat.
I have one terrible shot of AVR-3 at night in 2021, I was chasing the WE billet train and out-of-position/didn't trust my ears. th-cam.com/video/Kcf59KADcJ4/w-d-xo.html. Unfortunately, the one time I caught a ballast train I had to break off for a prior engagement, so I only caught them at Bruceton. th-cam.com/video/Q-OTVCDzRDg/w-d-xo.html
Nice video bud! I love a nice chase on a gloomy day, and with killer power too!
Thanks Dan!
I like how you can see the similarities between the HHP-8 and Acela power cars.
I heard it was a deliberate design choice from Bombardier-Alstom
So how far up from the Hampton Road crossing is the famous Phil the groundhog 🤣🤣
Very cool & somewhat rear military catch. This was equipment from the 4th Battalion 3rd Air Defense Artillery Regiment (4-3 ADA) (Patriot Missile) @ Fort Sill, OK. They had completed a deployment in January of 2023 as part of Operation Enduring Freedom - Spartan Shield in the United Arab Emirates. My most likely guess is the equipment is heading to Letterkenny Army Depot in PA for heavy repair or upgrade.
Fascinating context! Thank you for adding the information.
