What a beautiful story of the real humankind!

There is a lot i like about this movie, as a Kiwi. One thing is the dignified warm portrayal of the Germans. Another is the true-to-life teasing and self depricating humourous banter of Maori. As a collective culture, that humour is the grease that oils the cogs. Another is our national anthem, sung at the end. The Maori verse is always sung first and is not a direct translation of the English version (of which there are many verses, but we usually just sing one, or two at most). The anthem is unusual in that it is a prayer, primarily beseeching the almighty to build us together in love/aroha. This means it positions us in humility and aspiration, rather than grandiose posing - a safer kind of pride in one's country, i think.. It was overwhelmingly apt and moving when sung at the national memorial service for the victims of the Christchurch terrorist Mosque shootings in 2015. Like the haka, it draws on depths that are beyond naming. At my little community primary school's graduation ceremony the other day, I was moved to see a Moslem mother originally from the subcontinent, in headscarf, almost in tears video recording her son performing the haka with his Maori and Pakeha (European decent) classmates, as a salute to the remaining senior school, who were rising in response. It is beautiful and deeply moving to see children and the younger generations of adults from all cultures spontaneously give haka with everything they can draw on as their deepest expression of sympathy, respect and aroha at various occasions nowadays. Singing the anthem in both languages and performing the haka together have taken our bicultural relations forward greatly. What a blessing. Im so glad when folk from other cultures recognise that they are being deeply honoured and respected when a haka is performed for them, simultaneously with the participants dignifying themselves.

this film showed Maori had guns...Maori were given spades to dig the tenches and only given guns when they were put on the front line..just like going to a gunfight with a knife

Not sure why i found it sad, but when the Germans started saluting after the Haka, i began to cry.
