Tig welding a vertical (3F) multi-run fillet weld
Before attempting vertical TIG welding, make sure you have the right tools and technique. Watch this video to learn how to master vertical TIG welding!
Vertical TIG welding (PF), which involves welding along a vertical surface, demands precise control to counteract gravity's pull on the molten weld pool. Here are essential tips to elevate your vertical TIG welding technique:
Key Tips for Vertical TIG Welding
Adjust Current & Travel Speed: Lower the current slightly to prevent overheating, and move steadily to avoid a sagging weld pool.
Use the Right Torch Angle: Position the torch slightly upward at an angle, around 5-10 degrees, to control the molten metal and keep it from dripping.
Control Heat Input: Use a pulsed TIG setting if available; this helps control heat, especially on thicker materials.
Tack Weld Often: Place tack welds along the joint before starting to prevent distortion and keep the pieces aligned.
Focus on Consistent Filler Metal Addition: Feeding filler metal consistently and in small amounts helps maintain a controlled weld pool.
Practice for Better Coordination: Vertical welding requires fine control over both the torch and filler rod, so consistent practice is key.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
Overheating the Weld Pool: Too much heat can make the weld pool too fluid, increasing the risk of a sagging or uneven weld.
Improper Torch Angle: An incorrect angle can lead to poor fusion or cause the molten pool to flow unevenly.
Skipping Tack Welds: This can lead to misalignment, distortion, and poor joint integrity.

Tig weld a corner joint one of two ways!
your non standard dip technique and the vast control trips me up and blows my mind. very authentic style and I can tell you have loads of control and comfort in your ability with not only the torch but the rod. I strive to be your level one day. Thanks for the vid you have a sub!
Appreciate that, and pleased it’s helping.
From mig to stick, first pic was a mig weld not stick
@ocean7027 well spotted.didnt have a pic of a rubbish stick weld.
your welds look amazing. genuinely inspirational. i'm about a month into learning how to weld and hope i can be as great one day
Thankyou glad we can be of assistance. You’ll know how to weld in no time, just be patient and it will come and keep learning.
Please could you do a TIG overhead open root plate butt next
That’s going to be a challenging one. Will add it to the to do list. ✅
@@weldtechsolutions Cheers👌Very challenging to get reinforcement on the root side.
What size wire and plate are you using?
@@weldtechsolutions Done a few mock ups on 10mm thick carbon steel plate using 2.4 S6 wire. 2.4 gap with <1mm landing edge. Feeding wire from the torch/prep side instead of back-feeding which you’d normally do on carbon pipe
What alternative tungsten do you recommend over the red tipped tungsten's ?👍
Ceriated tungsten which is the grey colour tip they are the safest alternative or lanthanated (blue/gold) tip
@@weldtechsolutions Much obliged 👍
Top video lads👍
Thanks 👍
Wow very amazing ❤ how long have you been making video like this ???
What?!? Always remember WHAT?!?! OF IM RUNNING AT ABOUT 125amps what do I need to remember?!???!!!!
Sorry we make shorts with a 15 second snapshot from the full video. If you watch the full video it will explain it throughly.
Full video on our channel and in the description.
Nice to find an English welding channel instead of the yankee dross ,but title says 3G commentary says 2G ,but its 5F come on boys

Everyone's a G these days . 5F sake were only welders lol.
@@weldtechsolutions it's all about getting the little things right, nothing wrong with being a welder 💪
@Phillip-q9s very true.we will make sure we improve moving forward.thanks for keeping us on our toes.😀
Last time i checked that's 135 MAG
Correct it is mag welding however for the benefit of everyone we use the term mig as that’s what most know it by. But yes it is mag welding 🫶🏻
This will be a big help, Definitely need to work on my angles, Again nice one 👍
I get the slag to make tea for when I’m done, this guy just keeps her at the back…😂😂😂
Great video Lads👍
Recently found your channel. Your videos are so good. I'm learning to weld and find them very helpful. I like that you're in the UK, too, as most of the stuff I've seen on here seems to be American. Thanks for what you are doing. Keep it up. 👍
Welcome aboard!
Hey, nice viedo. What wire size are you using? I have been welding 12mm plate, 15 degree bottom plate angle, 45 degree top plate angle. I am struggling to get fusion between runs at wfs 4m per minute at 22V with a push technique at 10 degree travel angle using 0.9 wire size.
What is your gap size? The settings here are based on 1mm wire so slight adjustments will need to be made for 0.8 wire. The root for us was 17.5 volts and wire speed 4.4 metres per minute with 2.4mm gap.
What if its off center outside of the square
Again top draw, are you a test centre/welding college?
We are looking to go that way in the future. But currently we are not. Glad you enjoyed it 😃

Best 6013 bead i’ve seen. I hate 6013. Rather give me 6011.
Always nice to hear! Completely agree, this was supposed to be done with 6011 but somebody kinda forgot the rods so 6013 it was 😃. Will be using 6011 in a few more videos in the future.

Amper????
Full video here: th-cam.com/video/Q5U_9vryqSY/w-d-xo.htmlsi=dgAgCR7QDdpjl8C0 I believe it was somewhere around 110-115amps .
hobby welding only have 240 volt ac only welding setand only 6013 welding rods think get ac 7018 rods to expensive
I agree, if welding is a hobby welding with E7018 makes no sense when E6013 are so much cheaper. What sorts of things do you weld?

In the usa, structural fusion totals to 6 passes. Im interested in 3 passes for fusion. Why the difference?
It depends on the thickness of the steel and what the weld procedure says I guess. We just did 3 on this particular video however you have given us an idea to complete a 6 pass run so watch out for that 😃
@@weldtechsolutions wow thank you for your speedy reply! Im taking notes for sure.
This video gave me the confidence to have a go, so far not so great but improving, I've posted it and give you a mention in the vid with your link for others in the same boat if that's ok.✌
Totally fine Daz thanks for that. It’s all about practicing and following the technique. You will get there 🙌🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻
What kind of lens is that over the camera ?
Hi just a basic shade 10 glass.
Sick, when you gonna do 3f stick? I'd love to see your opinions and preferred weaving techniques.
It’s on the agenda 😁. It’s like you can read minds 👀👍🏻👍🏻

Nice, spot on about the steady hand, and especially safety glasses under ones hood. God bless sir, work safe.

Ac, or dc, machine?
Dc machine
Hello brother I have a very big problem with 6013 I can only weld it flat position other positions puddle drips and never stick to base metal. What should I do please help me I have inverter welding machine which hase positive and negative cords. Should I change it like you?
Hi what size rods are you using and what amps are you running them on.
@@weldtechsolutions Hi brother Thanks for replying I used amperage from 60 to 100 to weld with 6013 overhead and vertical positions but no success but i have never known about changing polarity. Evertime i weld vertical puddle just flows down and drips to the ground. Size of rods 2.5 mm 3 mm
@vorsprung2330 I would use electrode positive. Amps for a 2.5mm I would look at around 80 for vertical and around 90 for overhead. You rod angle for vertical needs to be around 15 degrees pointing up. When you put a slight weave on vertical thats to spread the heat to keep your weld pool cooler so you can defy gravity. Ill have a look at vids that would help you and get back to you.
th-cam.com/video/Fg0IQf-aG0w/w-d-xo.html Is worth a look
th-cam.com/video/Q5U_9vryqSY/w-d-xo.html
It doesn't matter what you're welding, it doesnt matter if it's coded work or not. A cursive technique or some other technique that involves you leaving the root and focusing more on the side wall penetration is much better for corner joints.
Three runs easy to cap the gap, four if you wanna run a thinner bead and make it fancy. But it really depends more on the welders skill and preference. Personally, id do three just so its done and looks standard. You throw anything fancy or extra in there and it might just screw everything up. Fancy is for art, standard is for work, never let them know you can make it look pretty.
Very helpful
Pleased to hear it 🙌🏻
same wire speed for the root pass?
Sorry yes after the root pass is in turn up the volts and wire speed slightly.
I seem to struggle with delivering a decent root pass at the college. Open v butt on 6mm. Did a test piece, but unfortunately it snapped during root facebend. Back in tomorrow so trying to see how it's done.
Great video, and great joint/exercise to skill build. Your prep on that is great too !! Been training the non-dominant hand for about 2 years now, Had 8 years of tig experience with one hand prior, went to a beginners tig night class and taught the other hand from the basic joints. In work I started giving my left hand easy jobs, welds that were short, - got hidden/ground off, Then as it got more proficiency started putting it on symetrical joints, so that my right hand was basically showing my left how to do it. "Copy this". The dividens have payed off 2 years later, in a production/turn-table job now for a small company, It has minimised fatiguing being able to swap hands, makes some joints easier. All the overtime under the sun is more sustainable - obviously we shouldn't be burning ourselves out, but in this world - sometimes ya just gotta make the money. Well worth it to train up the non-dominant hand to anybody who is thinking about it. And if anyone is wanting to make a 6G test easier, This will serve you well.
Thankyou so much for that detailed and amazing explanation and your own personal expirence on it! Great advice given too pleased your enjoyed the video.
