    I agree with you 100%. The D40 is a fantastic camera. I have had multiple high-end Nikon, Pentax and Fujifilm DSLRS, but the 'ancient' D40 is still one of my favorites. Simple to use and amazing image quality straight out of the camera.

    It's bigger brother, the Nikon D50, is also one of my favorite cameras. The image quality is really high and it produces beautiful colors. It shares the same sensor as the D40 but a bit more versatile as it can also use virtually any Nikon lens.

    Great job Herb. I have a Nikon D40X with a kit lens. I also have an older Nikkor 35-70 AF f2.8 lens with manual aperature ring that I had on an old film camera. When I try to use it on the D40X, the screen reads, "Lock lens aperature ring at minimum aperature." Everything locks up until I change the lens from f2.8 to f22. However in the viewfinder, with the lens set to f22, I can see aperature settings of f2.8 under certain exposure setting in manual mode. What is going on? This makes no sense to me. I want to use this lens exclusively for shooting at f2.8 when I want to. Thanks for your great videos. I appreciate your knowledge and presentation style.

      Yes, they work without an SD card. You can record a few photos in the internal memory. You most likely need to use better batteries. The S760 won't turn on with very cheap batteries or ones that are not new.

      @@lhofattomamma Next thing to try is if you have a slight film of corrosion on your battery contacts. This can happen over time if the camera is not used for a while. take some fine sandpaper or a screwdriver and lightly (!) rub on the battery contacts on the battery door. VERY carefully do the same thing on the contacts in the camera body. Do you have contact spray or WD40 in your house? If so, take a little drip of it on your finger and tap on the battery contacts. Put the batteries back in the camera and turn it on again. See if this helps.

    Very nice, I was also a long time Nikon only shooter. My first Canon was also the 350Xt, I used it with a converter and a Nikon Ai 50 1.4 for a long time. Then got a Canon lens and the bokeh is very different from my Nikons and the color palette as well. It was a nice and welcome change,. increased my "paint brushes" if you will. Im getting a 50D soon to compliment the 350xt, since I like to have two bodies when I shoot. I still love my Nikons and I shoot them often and wont ever sell them but Canon is just as good. Surprised it took me so long to try them, I guess it just speaks to the quality of Nikon.

    My first DSLR was the K100D in 2006. Today I still own a K100D and an *ist DS, the predecessor of the K100D. One advantage of the *ist DS over the K100D is its prism viewfinder, which is much better for manual focusing. The *ist series started with the *ist D (prism viewfinder), followed by the *ist DS and the *ist DL. Note that the DL has a mirror viewfinder rather than a prism, just like the K100D/K100Ds/K110D. All *ist models lack IBIS. One nice feature of the *ist D is the flap in the base plate that allows easy access to the button cell that stores date and time settings. Unfortunately, Pentax omitted this handy feature from all subsequent bodies. Also worth mentioning is the so-called debug mode. All *ist models as well as the K100D and K110D have this mode available in the firmware. Not so with the K100Ds, you have to download this software separately (Pentaxforums is a source for such stuff). Debug mode allows fine tuning of the AF to compensate for front or rear focus, a feature not available on the mentioned models per se. AF tuning can only store one value at a time, so when I change lenses I quickly switch into debug mode to set the appropriate value for that lens. Once you get used to it, it takes about 15 seconds. Note, however, that there are settings in debug mode that can potentially damage your camera, so please read up well on what to do and what to avoid before you decide to try it out. Gruß und cheers!

    Thanks for this great video. I still love shooting with my K100D, it's a great camera and lots of fun to use. Unlike some other big brands, Pentax didn't de-feature their cameras to protect sales of upper-end models, they gave you everything and the kitchen sink. It's a shame the market didn't fully recognise it at the time. Here's a fun tip if you want to feel like you're shooting an old Spotmatic with manual light meter switch: When using K lenses enable the optical preview, this stops down the lens but also turns on the meter so you can manually set your exposure in real time by adjusting the shutter speed. It works on all my Pentax bodies.

    • @HerbsVintageTech
      @HerbsVintageTech 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yes, just like the X100F did. The problem with upscaling in the camera is, that you always will end up with a jpg and you are locked in what the camera software can do. If the camera would turn out a cropped raw file, you can choose an external upscaler (like Gigapixel or similar) and those get better as time goes on.

    It is what you like. Any camera is relevant. Are you able to tell the story with said camera? Is it helping you? Got the glass you need? Great! Everything is preference, and what makes you happy. A D40, or Z7 mk.2 or Z9, D850, it goes on and on. That is just Nikon. I had a D40, and had a ball with it. Small, light, and good lens support for my needs, but ultimately for what I was doing I landed on used D700, and D800. I shoot used Sony A7iii x 2 . I had a Canon 1DX, sadly it died a too soon death. I get the deal with the CCD, and CMOS deal, but not concerned about. Too busy telling the best story I can and not worrying whatis inside my camera. I am about my technique, the composition, and more. It ends always the same way. The kind of story you want to tell. I could really care less the sensor inside. I shot wonderful images with a Nikon D200, and D40,70s, D3200, 7100, 700, 800, just to name a few. I have the D800 and 700 now. They fill my needs well. I have Sony too. The 24mp sensor has a bigger demand on the lenses used. If you want to see a difference to the D40 in resolution, you have to use good glass. the 35mm 1.8 AF-S for example. Honestly, though, if you think you will take better photos with the D3300 compared to the D40, you will be disappointed. The ease of the D40 is its biggest asset. @@HerbsVintageTech Thank you for your answer to my question. I really enjoy using the D40 I must say. I also have a D700 and a d200, which are both quite chunky for traveling. And I actually prefer the output of the D40 sensor to the CCD-sensor of the D200! I think at 800 ISO the D40 has cleaner files. Just one more thing about traveling light: I have a Fujifilm xe2 (similar to your xe2s). When do you decide to go "mirrorless" when you plan a trip, for example. Do you take one DSLR and one mirroless with you. What would be your thought process on that?

      @@armingutschick9105 The 6MP CCD sensor is definitely cleaner at 800ISO compared to the 10MP CCDs. I will make a video about a travel setup sometime It's something I'm really passionate about. It depends a bit where I'm going and what I plan to do. If I go on a city trip, I sometimes just end up taking my Ricoh GR3. It's such a versatile camera and on a crowded subway I just don't want any camera bag. The rest depends purely on my mood. Sometimes I pick the D40, sometimes the K100D, sometimes the XE2s. I also really like the Sony RX1. I have several travel setups in small bags that I just grab and go. The secret for travel is a small bag. Years ago I decided on a bag size and if the gear doesn't fit, it stays home. Another very important step for a travel setup is to know what focal lengths you use the most. I lot of people try to cover every focal length from super wide to telephoto for travel "just in case". That leads to a lot of gear that is just heavy and in the way.

    Love the D40 It's my first dslr, get it for $160 with 18-105 lens It's never about megapixels, i've been using S mode (1500x1000) just fine for social media

      Some of my D40 photos were published in books, magazines and catalogues. I have seen movie posters printed from 6mp files. Megapixels don't matter, sensor size does.

    The D40 has a synchronizing speed of 1/500 of a sec when using a Nikon flash or third-party flash. If you use a manual flash then you can go all the way to 1/4000 of a sec which is the max speed of the D40 - a real magic camera. The D70 and D70s can go to 1/8000.

    I have both K100D Super and *ist D. The latter's shutter sound is much quieter.
