Hanon is a great tool, for many reason, that many pedagogy of the piano must realize. Whether you are a beginner, or a seasoned pianist or one, who has left the piano for many years and have decided to return to this monster of a keyboard with 88 teeth, Hanon, places you on the path to rejuvenation . What developments are meant for the fingers, hands, wrists, etc, are just mere reasons, why you should get into the Hanon Studies. These parallelism can be approach from many different ways paraphrasing as you go along, from the octaves to the tenths which will decrease any borders of repetition. Articulations involving, staccato vs. legato within each passage. Mainly, these exercises can be played musically, like children themes all based upon the C Major Scale. Many conservatories throughout the world focus all 12 tonalities. But, the true basis of this study is to search your mind from such a stiffening mindset pattern to that that leads to technical freedom, as if your brain, hands, wrist, arms, are functioning on auto pilot. You can accomplish many ways of getting your life necessities done, just going through the excesses without total concentration of doing them, make your coffee, do Hanon, things you must finish with a deadline, while doing Hanon. I would say that these studies are quick to develop the brain, mind, etc, as much as they are in developing your fingers to play the piano. There is insight in discovery, look to this as not just an exercise, but a path to secure your present as well as your future. My piano students are totally aware of this aspect. Show less Reply

Hello Janci...Although I studied this piece a long time ago,I took pleasure watching your very instructive tutorial...However,you didn't insert the ornaments, lower mordents for most of them, except for the last one on bar 30..It impacts the fingering..I have a question: how should I understand in the second part, the quarter note rests on some of the notes(left hand)...Does it mean I have to hold the note longer, like a slur?...Being French,I'm trying to find the proper translation of "voicing"...Would it be "expressiveness","harmony",or something else? Thanks for your explanation...

I saw a demo where Jacob Collier beat 31 vs 32 with each hand on his chest, and you could actually hear the interval progressing one through the other, with the alignment at the end. It was nuts. I guess you can train yourself to do anything. That 4 to 3 and back instantaneous transition looks difficult, as well, to a lesser degree, probably. I expect doing instantaneous accurate transitions such as 3,4,5,6,7 or some such would be even more difficult. All of those upper level scales look basically nuts, to me. ;-)

One of the points with Hanon exercises is to develop strength in the 4th and 5th fingers. How may I ask are you supposed to develop strength in those fingers if you compensate by this enormous rotation of the hand outwards everytime you use 4 and 5? :D

I don't shop with Amazon, so I used my local music store to get my books. I ordered the Faber and Alfred books since we are in a French speaking area. They sent the Faber Volume 1, but the Alfred Volume 2. So I was using Faber. But when I went in to talk music at the store, I saw that I didn't know how to talk music in French. They had a La Methode Rose as a bilingual book, but it was French and British. Later on I found John Thompson, and I have Volume 1 and 2. The Thompson has become my favorite. I didn't buy the first introductory book of Thompson, which I would use if I was an absolute beginner. LMR is not a beginners book, nor a childrens book. But I've gone back to it several times as a sightreading exercise. And I learned the Alberti bass very well.

"Boomer" of 65 years of age here. Ignore my comments as appropriate. I started when I was 12 or 13 years old. I had a private piano teacher for a once-a-week 30-minute lesson for three years. I was assigned the John Thompson Adult Preparatory Course Book 1, and that was followed by the John Thompson Modern Piano Course, books 1 and 2. I suppose the methodology and pedagogy was not up to what is expected these days. But, and "for my money" the most important thing for a beginning student who is not hugely motivated from the start, I enjoyed most of the music in the books. The emphasis was on classical music, simplified arrangements of famous classical themes, and also of some spirituals and other folk songs. In addition to easier unsimplified classical pieces. My teacher would play through various of the pieces for me, and if I liked a given piece, that was great motivation to try to learn it myself. In any case, my love of the piano and music in general increased gradually, and over time I became crazy about the piano. The main thing, to me, is that the music was attractive enough to hold my interest. I've read through some pieces in Faber and Alfred in the past, and I felt they were ho-hum. Ho-hum is not good enough to inspire much enjoyment. If I were a piano teacher--I'm not--I would always play through pieces for my students if they were not familiar with the music, so that the students could hear if the music interested them enough to want to try to learn a given piece. Ideally, I suppose, students should be able to listen to all of the pieces in various methods to see which method had the music that was most attractive to them. And then choose that method. It doesn't matter how great the "pedagogical content" is if the music doesn't engage students. Then again, what engages me might well bore younger people these days. In any case, thank you very much for this thorough and comprehensive review of four piano methods. I respect your obvious command of the principles of piano pedagogy!

Curious! Instead of straightening your fingers over the black keys, why not just keep the finger curved, lift your wrist, and play more into the black keys? If your fingers are curled, they are in a straight line instead of the curve you show when playing a 5-finger C-scale. If they are curved, rather than straight, you have more control to keep each note even.
