For a fleeting moment, we stood there, as if time had stopped for us. Neither of us spoke, neither of us moved. We just looked at each other, almost shocked that anyone could see so deeply into us. Then, as quickly as it happened, we would both continue on our way, our paths crossing in silence. This became our daily ritual, and in my mind, I began to call that place “The Hill of Love and Distance.” Day after day, she grew even lovelier, her dresses reflecting the colors of the sky, the sun, or the flowers. And every day, we stopped and stared, locked in some unspoken connection, as though our hearts were speaking in a language our mouths weren’t allowed to use. But one day, she wasn’t there. At first, I thought it was a fluke. Perhaps I had come too early or too late. The next day, I adjusted my timing, even if it meant risking being late for school. Still, she was gone. The days turned into weeks, and with each empty crossing of the hill, my heart broke a little more. Had she moved away? Or worse... had she found someone else to marry? I replayed all the missed chances in my mind, all the times I could have smiled or whispered a simple “hello.” Maybe I was waiting for her to give me a sign-a smile, a glance, something to push me past my fear. But now, I live in the world of “what could have been.” Should I have defied my parents’ strict rules? Should I have risked it all for a chance to turn “The Hill of Love and Distance” into simply “The Hill of Love”?
