Those homework videos are really helpful! Keep up the good work
Thank you! What are your fencing goals these times?
@@bentblades I'm just starting my journey with fencing, so my main goal for now is to get the basics, thank you for asking
@@ДмитроГерасименко-х1ж You are welcome and good luck! HEMA fencing is an amazing combat sport
My coach says me that we not allowed to have our knee come forward like you do. Bc it's increase a risk of trauma. What do you think about that advice?
That's a very good question. Take a look at the next video on lunges. Your coach is right - it increases the risk of trauma if (and most newbies do this) your lunge has an essential vertical component (i.e. when you put your weight on your knee). If your lunge is horizontal and comes from the explosive move of your front foot, then it's relatively safe. Also, your coach probably says your knee shouldn't go behind your toes, and this is where I stop my lunges usually (mind the camera angle), which is a little bit on the edge. I make these videos primarily for my own group so I know that I don't have people who tend to put a lot of weight on the knee. You want to be safe - don't go past vertical, you want to see what is technically possible - watch Olympic fencers :-)
@bentblades wow, Thank you for your detailed answer and for your time! I appreciate it!
Good
Nice form 👌
Why red one so defensive?
Цікавий випад але чи він достатньо ефективний? Досить легко на такій великій дистанції підлаштуватися під таку атаку плюс втрачаєш стабільність. Такий рух "all in".
amazing
Very interesting video. I definitely think that the spacing that the attack is initiated from is very important. Space is time, and without enough you simply can't react no matter how good you are, at a point it stops being a response to what your opponent does and a guess. This is also why binding at medium ranges is so important, as it allows you to limit the actions available to your opponent, similar to a clinch in unarmed fighting.
There is an interesting video by Robert Childs somewhere where he explains that having a contact with your opponent's blade makes your reaction time better
@@bentblades yes that's the whole concept of the edel krieg in German fencing theory, you want to bind with the opponent from long range with a strike as you close to mid range and you kind of stick to their blade mostly making it hard for them to strike around from one side to the other (freely abnehmen) such that they make a relatively large opportunity to attack if they do go around. Otherwise it's very much like clinch fighting with a weapon where you jockey for positioning on the opponent's blade and make tight direct cuts and thrusts at them once you get control of the bind.
Thanks a lot! That is some great stuff! Maybe Roworth had this in mind when he included the slip in his system. I wish you all the best and hope you are well.
Well, a slip as an action is a very common action in, let's say, competitive HEMA. What I think is important is that the speed we are dealing with is explains why you often need both a retreat and a defensive sword action. Some actions are just too fast to be blocked staying withing the same distance
Nice! But very "suicidal" so there are too many doubles ;) do you guys have a background in the olimpic fencing?
I wouldn't call is suicidal. There is only one double exchange in this fight, at 1:01. It's just fast, but all exchanges except one are clean points to one of the sides. In Ukrainian typical tournament rulesets we have a limitation of three doubles per fight, if reached, it is a double-loss for both fencers. So we are very conscious about doubles. However, we distinct doubles and afterblows, and after-blows are countable with 1 point discount for the second hit. Also, Ihor is one of the fastest guys in HEMA I ever meet, so most of the ABs will be just a clean hit against most of the fencers. No, we don't have a background in Olympic fencing but we do learn wherever possible, obviously including OF too
Thanks, I think I can see your point. The rulset definitely "dictates" the optimal approach. Too explain my (mostly irrelevant here) point of view: considering historical fencing, the ruleset is different: to receive even a minor hit is nearly unacceptable. In this approach the fencing in this video is like gambling with your life :) Again, you guys are very good, do not pay attention to my grumble ;)
@@andrmoro8430 I see what you're saying and couldn't agree more. We both are definitely a tournament oriented sporty jumpy-jumpy fencers. I agree that historical aproach would dramatically change the style. It made me wondering what ruleset would be optimal to make the value of the only clean hit high enough. I definitely should talk to my pals in the US, I bet they played a lot with it in the WMA
In terms of the standards of the Olympic fencing you're performing fleches from a distance too far. Maybe twice far than it should be. As the logic is that your blade should hit the opponent even before your leg ends it's step.
I totally agree on that and I was told so several times. In this particular case I wanted to make it long but this is also a personal technique flaw
Круте пізнавальне відео з цікавими висновками. Окреме дякую за українську в парі з англійською!⚔️🔥👍

Great fight, I am impressed with the speed and accuracy! Wish I could train with you guys once in a while! Fuckin senseless war.
A spear is a very linear weapon, so it narrows down the skillset requirements to distance management, precision and a central line control. I know several rapier fencers who like spear a lot for the same rerason they like a single rapier
Hard to imagine what a real fight would be like I assume something like this
It's hard to say, a spear wasn't a popular duelling weapon, but HEMA competition rules are often designed to motivate a behaviour similar to a real swordfight, so yeah, may be
Nice

Footwork is important :-)

Well thats pretty cool!
I like these fights, pretty much the only spear tournamnt I ever participated, but yeah, it was interesting
Nice one. Keep making videos like these :) I've read somewhere that tennis players don't really see the ball coming. So they judge where from the ball is coming from how and where the other player is standing. Probably its not entirely true there's a good point. I've felt something similar during fencing.
I think that is true. I saw young ping pong players practicing without a ball - exactly to learn how to make conclusions from the opponent position, not the ball coming...
Excellent video. I would like to think I would not be alone in asking that the Grandmaster's techniques be displayed in future videos.
I'll talk to the Granmaster, may be he will reveal some new knowledge to us
Very cool and interesting!
Thank you!
What was interesting - when the blade is practically 10 inches from the target for the thrust, for the cut it is very far, practically two blade lengths from it. But thanks to the fingers and wrist work it is getting to the target at the same exact moment. Next time I'll try to measure the velocity of the saber's tip, it's fascinating
