OFF SEASON | 2024 Run VLOG #21
A weekly video series featuring my training for the week. This week we recap my off-season. I finished up my last race for the year, the Squamish 50km in my last video. We take a look at my thought process behind off-season, next steps and finally a not-so-epic beer mile. Cheers! Time to recharge and reset before building for 2025's adventures.

    Is it safe to say that one should be able to do half of the race distance when one starts to train for a specific race? For example, the 50K training plan of the book that you showed on camera has long runs of 12 miles at the beginning but goes up to around 25 miles. So probably safe to say that one should be able to run at least 15 miles to realistically finish that 50K (31 miles) training plan.

    • @tanisbolton
      @tanisbolton 2 วันที่ผ่านมา

      It definitely depends on your running history. This book has a few tiers of training plans based on beginner intermediate advanced. No one really should be above 4hrs on a training run for 50ks or else you're leaving the race effort in training due to the long amount of recovery needed. So id say get a base season in so that you feel comfortable starting at 2hrs long runs at the start of the block

    I think your analysis is spot-on! I too am a road runner who switched to trails, and even six years after making that change and proclaiming how much happier I am with the relatively chill vibes of the trail and ultra community, I sometimes lapse back into being hyper-critical of myself when I don't hit a self-imposed expectation or goal. This video (and the accompanying blog post) were really nice reminders to focus on the lessons and triumphs that come from days that don't go according to plan. And for what it's worth, I was at the finish, saw you cross the line, and while I could tell you didn't have the day you wanted, all I felt was amazement at another athlete who ran that wasp-choked, frog-strewn, smokey, weirdly hot, lack-of-flow having meat grinder of a course (I did the 50 miler the day before) and FINISHED. And in the top 20, no less. I think you're amazing, and I know you'll go back and tear it up sometime soon!

    The Google Earth advice is amazing. Marvelous! I also liked your Excel version of a training plan. MUCH better than what I have been putting together.

    This is what coaching should look like ... self or from somebody else. Following a template training plan is not it. Your level of specificity is impressive. I do something similar but after watching this realize that I can do better at the longer range planning. One observation regarding training specificity for effort (in addition to elevation per distance) is in Jason Koop's "Training Essential for Ultrarunning 2E". On page p386-387 he shows an example of mapping the duration of the climbs to effort (he uses RPE) and training for that. This works particularly well on the treadmill (or as David Roche calls it, "treadhills"). One other thing, I uses Ultrapacer for race estimation. I have to adjust the normalized pace for conditions like surface, weather, current fitness, but it is very good.

      Thanks Eric. I have that book too - I should definitely check that out. I'm adding the uphill treadmill this year actually because of david roche! I've been binging the swap podcast on my runs lately. I like the idea of RPE since it's sometimes hard to simulate the actual elevation gain

      @@tanisbolton What other people call easy runs I call "podcast runs" because of listening to SWAP and ignoring any metrics. Regarding RPE, I personally have trouble using only that as a measure of effort, but try to triangulate it with other data.

    Like you, I have a road half-marathon (United NYC) before my trail races. And while I do see it as a bit of a benchmark on my fitness as I build up for the season, I know that avoiding injury is job #1 and I'm not anywhere near my peak. And I shouldn't run it as if I am. In my case, I have a boatload of metrics and tracking as well as an annual plan that is shaping up, so I'll hopefully have the discipline to run it at the correct effort and managed correctly. Because if I don't, it doesn't bode well for my goal races later on. Just some thoughts on taking the long view.

      I did the United NYC half in 2018 it was so cold that day my feet were numb till about the 5 k mark

      Thanks for the input Eric! It's great to see what others are doing for training. It's definitely a balance act between racing and training as races do eat into training time if you include recovery as well. Good luck at NYC!

    The NYC Marathon was my last race of 2023 and afterwards, my fitness took a nose dive. I was planning to (nordic) ski as a bridge to 2024 training, but it hasn't really snowed in Vermont. My A race for this year is Speedgoat and as a way to level up my fitness, I started olympic weightlifting. Not easy to start, but I've found that having two sports is fun, even if a bit hard on the body. Like you, I just back off when needed. The gloominess of (snow-less) winter running gets to me after about 2 hrs. Also like you, I have a half-marathon (NYC) in March and decided to embrace road training for that -- also to turn up the fitness. I'm still doing back-to-back long trail and hilly country-road runs on the weekend, but the midweek speed is better for my mood. Hopefully it won't rain so much this year and I'll be able to actually run in the mountains in the spring (vs slogging through and around pools of mud).

      Sounds like a great year! It seems like more rain than snow for most places this year. Good luck at speedgoat- such an epic run
