youtube.com/@MendItMark?si=vR1qQn9O3KXR9sH7
This is a re-upload of a video by Mend It Mark of The £25,000 Pre-Amp that went Wrong Tom Evans Mastergroove SR MKIII phono pre-amplifier repair that was taken down from his channel due to a spurious copyright claim.
I have re-uploaded this video as a show of support for the Mend It Mark channel and for the right to repair. A link to Mark's channel is above my description. Just to reiterate I am hosting Mark's video. All credits to the video belong to Mark.

In defense of Tom Evans, i feel fairly sure he put a lot of work into the design of this and i'm sure it was thoroughly verified to give the specs quoted, even Mark didnt criticize that, in fact Mark was very clever in the stuff he could have said but didn't, leaving it up to the user to join the dots. My own personal opinion...£25k? possibly not. Build quality - some very odd build decisions. Finally, don't, just don't challenge Mark, we've seen the quality of his work under zero information conditions... Poor Tom.
CE Mark? You really think TE has the paperwork to support that claim if challenged?
Tom Evans is a w⚓
I am surprised it was not glued together but that is probably coming next. If the Chinese made this it will be built of 10MM aluminum and priced with 2 less zeros but an audiophool will never touch it. I wonder how this compares to my iFi Zen Phono.
I own a iFi zen phono and think it is a fantastic sounding phono stage for the money. I like the way that on the iFi website that they show close up pictures of the PCB and are upfront that they supposedly have custom op amps. For less than £200 it is a great product. As for spending £25k on a phono stage each to their own but that could buy a very complete audio system.
The dip switches are particularly tacky.
The jig is up, Mr Evans.
I'd love the next 10 customers of Tom Evans to pull out of the deal. Only this way he might realise that his little scam operation can't go on forever. Those "machines" will definitely fail and they will be getting repaired by third party techs. That Evans guy probably didn't expect that so soon.
Keep 'em coming, boys!!!!!!
This is the fifth time I stumble on this video. I have already watched it in full, but this time it reminded me to subscribe to Mend It Mark! Thanks. Take this, Algo. And take something else, Evans.
'high end' lol. it looks like a high school electronics project inside
44 minutes of my time well spent. Remind me to avoid buying anything from Tom Evens. He should be prosecuted for Fraud.
My World Audio Design KLP1 Pre-amp - Thank You, Noel Keywood, Hi-Fi World - is so damn simple, I can service and repair it myself and it Dead Quiet in operation. It cost a fraction of the price of the TE Mastergroove Pre-amp; albeit 30 years ago. Still going strong and I've finally gotten around to having the Electrolytic Capacitors replaced, as it was getting a bit noisy. Now I just need to replace the two 6922 Valves and it will be perfect again. Who says Electronics needs to be complicated? Russ. Hampshire.
Tom Evan’s signed his own demise by putting a copyright strike on Marks Video . He should have just left it alone , Mark doesn’t have a ton of subscribers and honestly if Tom kept his mouth shut it probably would have just went away . But because Mark exposed his BS and he didn’t like that , he has now made it 100 times worse for himself.
Imagine you are genius enough to make money and dumb enough to buy this. Must be a very selective buyers pool.
I think the most surprising part about all of this is that audiophiles are acting shocked SHOCKED that any overpriced audio equipment could be snake oil
I love this video 😊 My favorite video in TH-cam.
It seems streisand is here to stay.
I love that all us electronics designers are coming out of the woodwork and giving our 2p worth in the comments!
For a preamp that is supposed to be extremely low noise, there is not a screened cable in sight !
I would suggest that the best way of supporting Mend it Mark is to subscribe to his Patreon channel - I did when I saw the video taken down despite being as likely to fix electronics as to become the next pope!
I subscribed to Mark's patreon channel this morning
Rip off Evans PMSL DISASTERGROOVE more like.... keep re uping this
Great job!! How could TH-cam persecute a retired Santa Elf. He is just fixing the toys of the World! :-)
Thanks for sharing this since Mark can't anymore. He got Masterscrewed by Tom Evans Audio Design with that spurious copyright claim. They were just really upset he rather innocently exposed their Mastergroove's pre-amp as a highly overpriced Mastergoof.
£25,000,, 🤣
The cardboard shims for the panels had it for me! What a magnificent piece of audiofoolery. 🤣
If the manufacturer had done nothing this video would have been forgotten with Mend it Marks next upload. Now he opened a can of worms on himself. Lucky for him, rich, snobby, audiophile types down typically watch You Tube repair videos.
Thanks man! Hope there’s 100 more youtubers who share this.
That preamp is 3K at best.
ifi-audio.com/products/zen-phono-3/ look at this phono stage with similar claim but costs about £249 and weep. I have the cheaper iFi Zen phono which cost me about £179 and in my experience lives up to the manufacturers claims and sounds fantastic. £25k for a phono stage, really? TE has throughly priced himself out of the market
I mean it's a good design but £25,000 is silly, especially considering the pretty low build quality
Excellent - Think Tom Evans should have stayed quiet about his eye-wateringly priced second rate school project :)
Mark! Again you demonstrated your talent and craftsmanship. I always say: the more you use plumbing, the easier it is to clog up the drain!
This whole story is weird... Customer sends amp to Evans for repair. Claims Evans wants too much money to fix it, but doesn't say how much. Has Evens mail the amp to Mend it Mark and claims Mark won't be able to fix it (hearsay). Mark receives the amp, and shipping company damaged it as shown in Mark's video. Mark, not only fixes the amp, but repairs the damage quite nicely. Was the amp damaged when shipped from owner to Evans, or Evans to Mark. Or was the amp damaged, then sent to Evans? We don't know. The strange thing is, why did Mark go through all the trouble and hours to create a proper schematic for this amp with nicely punch holes and bound into a neat booklet? An amp he will never see again nor need a schematic for. Mark laughs about how cheap plastic stand-offs were used, shows metal stand-offs in his drawer as what should have been used, yet, replaces all the broken plastic stand-offs with more cheap plastic stand-offs. Wouldn't you upgrade it for your customer?, you had the parts in stock. Customer too cheap to spend 3 dollars more? Or was there some other reason.... We see a short video and think, wow, that was quick and easy fix. But what we didn't see were the numerous hours Mark put into this amp, reverse engineering it, creating a manufacturers grade schematic, and fixing the "shipping" damage. How much did the amp owner have to pay Mark? or was this all theater to trash Tom Evans? I'm not here to judge what the value of the amp is. Obviously, the owner bought it. New or used, working or broken, we don't know the real story. Did the owner buy it used "as is" fully knowing one of the channels didn't work, and trying to scam his way into a cheap fix to possibly flip the amp for a profit? Only the owner and Mark know the true story. And there is obviously a lot left out of the story. Meanwhile, the hivemind crowd with no critical thinking, jumps on the bandwagon to trash Evans.
I'd like to know if Tommy Evans built it with lead free solder..?
very cool!
Nice advertising campaign, Tom Evans Audio! Are cardboard shims what makes the case "custom"? ROTFL
Imagine paying £25k for that pile of garbage. You open it up thinking it must be like a Krell or Mark Levinson inside for build quality and find that its full of parts that Maplin rejected.
Thanks for reuploading
Don't think there will be a Mastergroove SR mkIIIl any time soon :)
I only found this channel thanks to Mr Evans! Thankyou Mr. Evans, ill be sure to blast Barbara Streisand over your meticulously designed alien tech!
Let's gooooo
Love
The second re-upload that was recommended by TH-cam. Literally right after I commented on the first one I saw, this was on the top row.
This preamp ought to go well, powered by a DCS battery and played through Tekton speakers
10:30-13:30 and 15:15-15:20 are where the re-created design document is leafed through page by page on screen. At 17:06, moreover, you can see how the exact position of each component and the precise shape of the board is diagrammed in the document.
Barbra Streisand suppression filters failed again.
Nice one Matt!!👍😂
Mark is amazing, that service manual is a work of art.
Thanks Matt.
This seems to be popping up everywhere. There is a Chinese idiom 欲蓋彌彰 which originates from the 4th century BC, meaning roughly "trying to conceal something makes it more conspicuous".
most expensive pre-amp ever made - for mark evans 😅
