Team Goose Ruapehu VLOG 2024
มุมมอง 1432 หลายเดือนก่อน
Mt Ruapehu 2024 season VLOG capturing a number of different days on both sides of the volcano. Super stoked to have my 10yo son Jackson now riding up the chairlifts with me and sending it down the green runs with me! Overall it was a below average season for snow but both teams on either side did an amazing job with what little Mother Nature had to offer them.. Rock on 2025!
Channel Islands Two Happy Ride Review

This review is a follow up to the Happy review i did a couple of years ago. i replaced my stock 6'1 Happy with a stock 6'1 Two Happy for daily driving and had picked up an ex team riders 6'2 Two Happy as a slight step up from that. I surfed my 6'1 a fair bit here at home and it went super well in good head to over head waves with punch but hadn't surfed the 6'2 at all up to that point. I ended ...

Welcome to another Backyard Surf TV ride review. This time I managed to score some really fun waves and got to put my CI Happy model thru its paces at the legendary point break at Raglan! This Happy is a stock 6'1 x 19 1/4 x 2 1/2 coming in at 30.6L of volume and sits right in the middle of my quiver as my daily driver for good quality waves in the 3-5ft(head to overhead ) range. Would you recommend the AM2 for when it gets a bit hollower or more powerful? I’ve been riding it on the AM1 Blackstix and they go great on the waist-head high range.
yea the AM2s are my goto for bigger overhead more powerful walls where you need that hold but as i said in the vid i reckon the FT (Toledos) would have handled the overhead maldivian waves ok if i was in the ments or cloudbreak where the waves are heavier id prob goto the AM2s
How tall are you?
190cm / 6'3
Hey can the rook 15 work in 2-6 feet waves aslong as there’s some punch? For a more low advanced surfer? Maybe jbay 2-8feet
yep the Rook15 is basically your hot rod performance model for steep pockets and barreling waves or any wave that has lots of push to it. Its heavily rockered right thru the board so needs these types of waves to perform.. j bay would be the perfect canvas for it with point break power on tap ! mines a 6'3 step up(im 6'3) that goes good in solid 4-6ft (overhead to double O) point waves. Its a performance design so foil and rocker are highly sensitive for quick direction changes suitable for advanced and up only. you can see in this video how my 6'2 rook struggles in 2ft softer waves but as soon as its overhead and barreling or a wave with curve it works great: th-cam.com/video/Jnn0HLKHjDs/w-d-xo.html
@@wingman7nzepic, thanks. My brother had a proton which has even more rocker and he surfed it as a daily board😅 he said it was a magic backhand air board😂 but I think for a board like this to work in softer conditions the surfer really needs to be advanced like you said. I’d have to order mine with slight thicker rails and width, is yours a stock 6’3?
@@wingman7nzthis is the wave I surf the most th-cam.com/video/rpGdDb9nKX8/w-d-xo.htmlsi=npRSQNO2z_2VRR-b do you think it will work there because I usually surf a punchy beach break but when the points working I’ll be there instead
@@foxgd88 Never ridden the proton but think its the most rockered in the CI range maybe the CIPRO is up there too? Never got close to an air on my rooks ive always used them in bigger steeper surf not smaller punchy beachies although if scaled down they would prob go mental like your bros proton did. Yea my 6'3 is a custom step up(6'3x19x2 3/8 29L) and the 6'2 was stock in the other vid i sent. I honestly dont want to work too hard in softer waves these days so using proper daily drivers are more my jam for that stuff things like NB2's, OG Flyers, Happy Everydays be much better tools for the job. I have a 6'1 TwoHappy that is really good also for daily driving in head high waves with a bit of punch.
@@wingman7nzyes Thanks a lot , def have to get a two happy. But I saw Noel salas review on the rook 15 and he mentioned it’s a great board for progressive surfing on the more advanced level, definitely works better under light footed groms than most of us😂
Hey man, how do you compare the rocket wide vs the ultra Joe?
Ultra joes my bottom groveller for smallest and weakest waves I surf(basically 1-3ft and anything from flatter face to mellow bowls) the rocket wide I used as more of a daily driver for 2-3ft better shaped waves mellow to better shaped bowls. Both boards you could maybe surf up to 4ft(overhead high) but would have to use raked or carver fin template for extra hold.
@@wingman7nz cool thanks! Considering one of the two but rocket wide seems a bit more versatile.
Yea if after more of a daily driver for waist to head+ the rocket wides your whip as can surf it up and down the range more easily than the ultra which to me is more of an out and out grovel board.. Enjoy!
Sick trip bro, how did you find the crowds, a bit more mellow and chilled vibes compared with other parts of Indo etc ? Or were the crowd still pretty heavy at some spots like Cokes ?
Cheers was an insane trip tbh! Crowd wise its way diff to Indo definitely more chilled in water and even though numbers wise some spots get as busy its mainly full of lower intermediate or beginners with only a handful of guys that are experienced. This causes a diff issue where instead of the usual mad jockeying for the peak you are usually taking off and having to avoid all the surfers on the inside which can really ruin your rides at times. This only happened a few times though when all the boats turned up at the same spot at same time. I had many epic sessions with just our boat or one other on it so was definitely worth doing the trip there for those 100% :) ..the locals all surf to a reasonable standard with some sponsored rippers in the mix now too but found them all very welcoming if you respected the lineup!
Where did you stay? You didn't need to buy a surf pass?
I stayed at Jailbreak Surf Inn, Himmafushi no need for a surf pass at Jails, Sultans Cokes or Chickens as they are not private spots. Only Pasta and Lohis you need to be a resort guest to surf there.
@@wingman7nz I'm looking to stay right on cokes Reef edge Inn, as I'd like a right hander. So no alcohol on those public islands? Is it easy to organise transport to surf breaks? How was jailbreaks to surf?
@@action24061974 the Maldives is a Moslem country so no Alcohol unless your at a resort. Cokes is a great wave perhaps the best in the Nth Male Atoll although i didn't score it good on my trip. Boats to the surf spots are easily organized through your accommodation and they usually offer 2 x transfers per day(unless goes flat or onshore). I found Jails a super fun high performance wave if you get the right one from the outside point it will wall up through 3 long sections offering 6+ turns and up to 300m rides. It can barrel at jails too like cokes but i think the better barrels are found at cokes that's why it is regarded the premier wave in the area.
Looks amazing. How shallow/deep are the reefs where these waves are breaking?
Cheers def one of the best surf trips ive done! the reefs are not super shallow like indo slabs(ie-less than knee deep) on the outside sections and this allows for more roll ins although it does get fairly shallow on the inside sections of each reef(where its barreling). Cokes is prob the most shallow of all of the Nth Male Atoll waves and also the most powerful. I felt like that was the spot you had to be more selective so as not to end up on the reef esp if bigger swell and lower tide.
I'm trying to decide whether it would be better for me to stay on Himmafushi or Thulusdhoo (planning on going beginning of august). I'm a somewhat experienced surfer and it seems cokes is a better wave and could be less crowded but also more exposed to winds. I did some research and I think I can surf jails/sultans/honkys even if I don't stay near himmafushi by finding a boat that takes me there. Having just been there, would you recommend himmafushi?
good question! i would def have split my trip into a week on both islands had i known that chickens is about the only left in the nth male atoll that deals with the predominate trade from the wsw/wnw(all the others rely on no wind/glassy or nth winds. Being a goofy foot i was craving lefts by the second week and stayin in thulusdhoo would have been great for access to chickens which is a really underrated wave. Also Cokes is the heaviest and most hollow wave there and if your looking to get barreled that would be the wave to pitch camp at but as you said it does face the wind more up there and jails/sultans are really sheltered. You can get there from Himmafushi but its a long boat trip up and some resorts will only do it once a week. I would split my trip between both.
@@wingman7nz Thank you for the detailed reply!
@@matteociccozzi2385 no worries glad i could help.. enjoy paradise !!
Do you still like spinetek in choppier onshore conditions?
Yes with the ultra joe model I do as it is high volume and doesn’t get effected by wind and chop as much as a lower volume epoxy shortboard would
happy or fever? differences?
the fever is prob the more user friendly everyday shorty with its wider tail block and less refined tail thickness the happy has less entry rocker so gets in easy but needs a good wall to do your best surfing on it.
@@wingman7nz thanks, also good surfing good reviews!
@@jump171 cheers hopefully cam knock a couple more out this year.. hard to get the footage thou !
Wicked waves how long ago was all this?
Cheers Tom! vids from 2018-2020 shot on both east and west coasts :)
whats your contact.. facebook? insta? or email? regarding old boards .. nice vids subscribed
cheers mate.. hit me up on insta @wingman7nz !
That Fever looks too narrow given the style of riding. A bit more rail volume would be good. Go for the Rusty Blade,… or the Rusty 1984,… or the Lost Rad Ripper.
Fantastically captured surroundings, impressive mountains! 🔥🔥🥾🥾
Cheers was amazing to finally get up to that Crater Lake! Views and a run back down to die for!❤❤
You mentioned in another comment that you traded your Fever for a Happy? Curious which you liked better? I’ve had both and I think I liked the Happy better overall. Seemed like it was faster, especially in weaker or smaller surf. For me the Fever really bogs in weak surf. The Fever goes rail to rail better, cut backs feel awesome with it and I might prefer it when conditions are ideal. Both boards worked well when the waves are good and have some size/power but the Happy for me is more versatile.
yea i traded this spinetek fever for a pu happy as i went down to a 5'11 OG flyer in spinetek which grovels better than a fever and brought the happy in as my better wave daily driver. The happy definitely has lower entry rocker which may help it out grovel the fever but yea that lower entry sometimes didnt fit the pocket as well as the fever so a bit of a trade off there. Ive ended up selling my happy and now have the two happy in the same 6'1 stock dims and another custom 6'2. Hopefully i can bang out reviews on both the OG and the two happy once i get my soloshot fixed. feel free to subscribe so you dont miss future reviews :)
You must like the Two Happy better than the Fever and OG Happy? My Fever is on the way out so I’m going to be in shopping for a new HPSB soon. I had an OG Flyer as well awhile back, I liked it but the the one I had was a little big for me.
@@jt3366 i think it all comes down to these shapers trying to find that magic rocker in a HPSB esp in the daily driver category which the happy, fever and two happy all sit in with their staged rockers. The fever has the most nose rocker of the 3 while the happy has the least, they are kinda opposite in terms of rocker while the two happy has gone in the middle of the 2 rocker wise. Ive got to do more testing with the two happy but at this stage its been a super fun daily HPSB!
Hey mate, is this board in epoxy or pu?
It’s an epoxy.. went good in glassy or light wind conditions didn’t like strong offshores very much so it got traded for a pu happy in the end :)
Sweet review, have you tried quads?
Thanks :) i have tried quad setup in both a #4 groveler and my Ultra Joe. They go fast and great for waves with time to setup turns but for the waves i surf around here i prefer to be on thrusters or 2+1
nice one mate!
Cheers Jacko glad i finally got this one done!
Nice stuff!
Cheers Davo hopefully some useful info in there for ya :)
Great review! I’m looking to order up a 5’7” UJ in spinetek. Im excited about going stringer less EPS, but nervous at the same time since it makes for an pricey board that i dont know how well they hold up. Hows the durability of your Spinetek? Would you buy again? I was at my local shop feeling a rocket wide Spinetek and a guy started talking to me about how he just snapped his in what sounded like head high surf. Would you be nervous riding yours in dumpier beach break?
ive owned 6 diff spineteks since jumping on one in 2018 and surfed them all hard in a variety of conditions. the only thing that ive noticed is the decks do give way to foot pressures but i like that as it kinda helps your front foot sit in the sweet spot(bit like how taj burrow used to have them shaped into his boards). I havent snapped a spinetek yet and rate the overall durability really well. I did crease the nose in one of my NB2's but any board would have done the same in that situation where the board is pile driven down into a super shallow sand bank!
@@wingman7nz Thanks for your input! I'll try and stay away from pile driving my freshie on the first day out! haha
Nice review and footage….have you managed to check out the Two Happy? Be interested in a comparison….I had a few Happy models and the low entry worked well, not sure I want more entry rocker…cheers
Cheers for the kind words! I just got hold of a two happy recently but haven’t had time to take it for a spin yet. Im aiming to get some footage and do a review this summer. Make sure to subscribe so you don’t miss it!
Just a quick update I liked the Two Happy so much that i sold my happy and got another Two Happy in 6'2 as a slight step up

Cheers mate do you have or have you used a soloshot before ? What did you think of the happy review ?
@@wingman7nz great review. The footage is good too. Really helps to see how the board goes.
@@terenceingram7786 cheers mate appreciate the feedback I’ll try to get another review up soon. Might be a wetsuit review and comparison
Ultra Joel vs c4 lost which one is the best ??
Haven’t ridden the lost puddle jumper but my dims in that model come in around 33.5L on the 5’9 so perhaps a touch more performance than the UJ but maybe a slight sacrifice in some paddling and down the line speed on flatter sections. But without riding the PJ I couldn’t give you a definitive answer.. sorry !
What did you film with a potato?

I currently have a 7ft foamie but I am starting to perform some basic maneuvers I’m around 5’6 and the waves are pretty small and mushy. I want something that is a good step up is this a good fit.
If your ready to jump off the softboards and onto a glassed one the UJ is def a great stepping stone. Have you tried a shorter softboard something around your own height just to get used to the drop in length? You could try that first then look at getting onto an UJ in appropriate dims after that?
Yes I have a 5’6 foamie and it worked pretty well I’m still getting used to paddling so after I get stronger I will get an UJ
@@soniamancuso3964 Awesome! keep surfing as much as you can to build up that paddle fitness and board control, look fwd to hearing what you think of the Ultra Joe when you get hold of one :)
Rocket wide or Ultra Joe for go to groveller ?
for pure groveling i'll take the UJ over the RW however if the waves have got some sort of bowl and an opportunity to do more performance turns i would prefer the RW with its more performance outline.
If you are having trouble setting up and calibrating your SOLOSHOT3 I made this step by step video to help you so It works every time. th-cam.com/video/hIubKBTIyT0/w-d-xo.html
CIS rocket wide vs ultra joe for 1-4 foot surf? paddling, manouvrability, speed, flow? pros and cons for each other? cheers
Hey Diogo in 1-4ft i found the UJ is the one im reaching for when the wave shape is flatter and less powerful as the outline and extra width/volume give it a paddle/speed advantage over the RW. If the waves start to get steeper with more of a bowly power pocket i would reach for the RW as with its more performance outline (pulled in nose etc) it has a distinct advantage for maneuvers in the pocket
Cool Thxxx....
Cheers Kyle !
How does the rocket wide and the ultra joe compare in the 1-4ft (knee to chest high) softer surf? can the rocket wide do it as good as the ultra Joe but better?
The Rocket Wide can grovel prety good in the small weak stuff (knee to chest high) but the Ultra Joe does it better due to the fuller outline toward the nose and a bit of extra volume throughout the board. The RW has the advantage over the UJ though when it comes to doing more critical pocket surfing in better quality small waves eg- waist to head high bowly surf. Check the review i did of both boards in the Ride Reviews section
Good question! I am considering both as well for 1-3 foot week beach breaks

Nice little video! I’ve been thinking about upgrading to the soloshot3. Is this the 25 or the 65?
sorry for the late reply man just seen your comment now! mines the optic 65 and i would recommend this one if a lot of your surf spots are further from shore the extra zoom helps a lot otherwise you would lose a lot of quality when zooming up in your editing software afterwards. Happy Surfing !
@@wingman7nz thanks for the reply! I ended up going with the 65 and couldn’t be happier with the results. Do you know what settings you use to get your best results from the camera?

Hi wingman, I love your videos. are all your videos with the soloshot? And what types of tech problems have you been experiencing? it is with tracking? zooms? angles? I would love to buy a soloshot but am afraid of all the problems with it. thanks so much
Cheers and thanks for reaching out! all my recent vids(2018 onwards) are soloshot. Its worked good for me about an 80% hit rate so way i look at it is thats 80% more footage had i not got one. Best advise if you do get one is to follow all the advise from soloshot about where and when to use it also to keep the unit/tag updated and get a decent tripod. I always try to use it at less crowded spots too i find that helps with wave count on video. All the best !
Very informative and nice clean edit! Thanks man!
Cheers Buddy! appreciate the feedback :)
Lovely man! Would you say this has been a helpful tool for your progression and worth the money?
Totally recommend getting one and putting in the time to video yourself. The biggest problem the average surfer has is not being able to see themselves surf and creating bad habits. The Soloshot shows you how you really surf not how you think you surf :) it is the ultimate self training tool !
