65 years ago my Grade 7 teacher read to us just before the departure bell and these readings included chapters from Richard Halliburton's 'Book of Marvels.' The description of Pompeii and Vesuvius has remained with me. Then several years ago I found a used copy of the book and stuck inside were the newspaper articles describing his death at sea.

I am Māori from New Zealand who moved to Tennessee 2 years ago. My family and I are going to the Powwow in Union City this weekend. Its been a lifelong dream of mine to rekindle an experience that I had as a child. Around 1988 a group of Native Americans came to my village in Te Reinga and performed on our Marae(which is a sacred space, gathering place for Māori). I remember how connected i felt, the drums, the singing, dancing, and beautiful regalia i saw. Im so grateful to be able to experience this again as an adult. This is going to be so nostalgic. ❤

I can see Belfast and Moosehead Lake Railroad steam locomotive #1149. Built in 1913 by the Motala Verkstad NOHAB (Nydqvist & Holm AB) for the Swedish State Railways (originally the Royal Railway Board) for express passenger and freight trains (mixed traffic engine), it is one of 96 locomotives built for SJ between 1909 and 1919. They shared some characteristics with the Prussian P 8 class mixed traffic 4-6-0s, classified as engines with 4 axle leading trucks, 6 driving wheels and no trailing wheels. #1149 was then acquired by the Belfast and Moosehead Lake Railroad in 1994 and was commonly known by the company as the “Spirit of Unity”. #1149 then received retubing in 1998 in compliance with FRA standards. It ran on excursions between Unity and Burham Junction until sometime in 2006. B&ML operations were suspended in 2007 and did not return until 2009. Unfortunately, there were not enough people who had any interest in foreign locomotives to make patronage on the old Maine short line. It was sold in 2010 to the Great Smoky Mountains Railroad. However, GSMR found the move too costly and it was sold and moved to Union City, Tennessee where visitors can enjoy seeing it up close.
