Keeping it real while starting our homestead from scratch.
Forced to Destroy our Greenhouse
On this video we will be taking apart our destroyed greenhouse. The greenhouse sustained a lot of damage during Hurricane Helene and we didn't feel comfortable putting it back after it broke anchor so we decided it was time for it to go.
Hopefully in the future we will be able to build a more solid structure.
Thank you for Watching!

Welcome to the 5.0.F. family! We are glad that you are here.
We officially started this Homestead in 2022 but we have spent many years preparing for it and now it is finally happening. When we bought this property it was completely destroyed. We spent months living in our camper in the driveway while we renovated our home. Now we’re in the process of renovating the rest of the property one project at a time.
Stick around and see the transformation and learn along beside us. As we grow our own food, livestock, and family.

150 jars 🫙 plus what you gave away and ate. 🎉😂 I don’t can. Yes my guess was right.
Please don’t ever go out your house when there’s a storm or hurricane it’s so dangerous please be safe.
Thank you, I will definitely stay inside next time.
You do not go outside when shit is flying around.
Very true words. When it happened I definitely wasn’t thinking.
As you know the main definition of HOMESTEADER is someone who is SELF SUFFICIENT in all aspects of living life…. Naturally. To me, it’s all about how much of a compromise a homesteader is doing. Back in the 1800’s and early 1900’s it was much more needed to be self sufficient and therefore be more of what you’re calling a true homesteader. I just really appreciate people like you that are doing as much as you can for your family to be self sufficient… Maybe to a few homesteaders out there they would disagree, But to the subscribers that watch you I think they see that you are homesteading and they are not going to split hairs about the HOMESTEADING word. Please continue what you’ve set out to do. Doug
@@DougTaylor2011 we are doing our best to become more self sufficient but it is a big learning curve. I think I forget that how we are living is so very different from the majority. I feel like it is normal but that is only because I am seeing it from my own perspective. Thank you for your encouragement! Have a great weekend Doug!!

You're in Alabama? I'm very jealous. I didn't see a single rock when you were tilling. With the same size bed in up state NY , as a kid I would have tilled for twice the time (because of all the rock jams) and picked rock for 2 days (I know, after walking to and from school up hill both ways). That always amazed me that every year we plowed or tilled, there never seemed to be fewer rocks. Our primary crop was rocks. It looked like we had rock burial cairns all over the place from the rock we picked each year. Most of it came in handy eventually (I built rock retaining walls for hire with a lot of it). I love the use of garden fabric! I only had one weed free experience where we grew potatoes under black plastic. It was the only garden I didn't have to weed. Did you do any of this in Alaska? Not a terrible growing zone in Kodiak (7). And the soil! Other than drainage problems in the low lands it's rich from what I hear. You would have the challenge of very large grazing and foraging animals to deal with, as the towns name would suggest. Berry big berry eating bears, and how many deer does it take to destroy a garden?
Our area has been heavily farmed so many rocks have been removed already. We do get some I even made a comment to my kids that we grow rocks every winter because there is always more rocks in the spring. 🤣 I hope the plastic helps us not to have to weed. Thanks for watching! Hope you have a great week
Love eating green beans but I never liked picking them. We blanched and froze to feed 4 people through the winter (looks like you have a few more than that) and planted accordingly(along with meat birds we raised). When they came in, they came in with a vengeance. We were in a 4b to 5a zone so you don't have a lot of time to get it done. I'd maul the plants but you can't kill a string bean plant unless you rip it out of the ground so as soon as is rained, or the wind blew, the plants recovered. Green beans, snow peas regular peas... If I list everything it'll just look like a Burpees seed catalog selection for that growing zone.
You are what you eat and chickens produce a lot of nitrogen anyway...
That is a pretty big garden you have going on. When I was younger we had a good size garden as well. Thanks for the video.
It’s very large. I hope I can keep up with it this year. Thanks for watching!
I have never had great success with corn. Love to hear what you have learned
I learned a few things. First corn is a heavy feeder. Fertilize at planting, when it’s knee high, and when you first see tassels. I use earth tone organic fertilizer. Plant them close and in a clump not long rows. They pollinate using wind so it’s better clumped together than spread out in a single long row. I am using long rows but I will have 3 rows running together. Finally don’t wait to long to pick or it will be very starchy. That was my downfall I waited to long to pick. Hope that helps! Thanks for watching!
@@fiveoaksfarm5043 We did the old Indian trick at least one years and threw fish heads in the hole then planted corn on top of it. I don't remember what the results were. I'm sure it worked but I know we also used fish emulsion which takes a lot less time to catch...

You are so lucky they did your surgery with the scope.they tried that with me but there was too much infection so they had to stop and then cut me open to take my stones and gallbladder out.
That is terrible. Hopefully you healed well.
@@fiveoaksfarm5043 yes i did thanks.i could drive or do any steps for 8 weeks.
I healed completly but it was almost a year before. I was completly back to normal.
My husband got very sick on the 17’th of December, by the 19’th he was not holding anything down and severe abdominal pain. Our doc ordered a STAT cat scan BUT OUR HEALTH SYSTEM SAID IT WOULD BE 4 days before they could get him in…..WTH ITS A STAT ORDER. We went to a hospital out of our network as his bloodwork came back very very bad as he was almost septic. They gave him. Scan and sent him right to their ER to be seen for emergency surgery for a gallbladder like yours. We sat in that er for 7 hours! 😡😡😡. He was in so much pain that we almost left! They admitted him and he had surgery at 7 am the next morning. His labs were still bad and he had lost 19 pounds but they sent him home after two days. 3 days later we were back at that ER for pain and vomiting, another scan showed his abdomen was full of bile and infection because he was leaking around the surgical clip. They were not equipped to deal with this type f emergency so they sent him to a bigger hospital where they went in and drained all the fluid and placed a stent to help with the back pressure. Put him on the same I’ve antibiotics he had in the first hospital that didn’t work and when I asked why they said oh it should be fine now, we drained out all the fluid. After 5 days they send him home. For the next 3 days he did not get better, still nausea and fever and losing weight down to 25 total lost. We were thru with that health system and went back to our own hospitals ER, another scan showed an abscess around the surgical site near the clip! Back to admit, much stronger antibiotics and another scan and abscess drain with the help of infectious disease doctor. Thankfully they had him on the right antibiotics that time and he was allowed to go him after 4 days. I’m sorry you had to go thru that, we are sending prayers to you.
Wow, I’m so sorry to hear your Husband had to go through this. The health care system is not the same as it used to be. Thanks for the prayers and we will lift up your husband in prayers also for continued healing and not to be miserable due to surgery. I’m still not the same and I have not had really good sleep since my gallbladder was taken out. I have to sleep sitting up 85 percent of the time because I’m so miserable in my stomach. Thanks for watching!
I am so sorry this happened to you. Our hospital system is definitely broken and finding someone who cares is so difficult. God bless and thank you for your prayers
I'm a little late finding your vlog, but I'll catch up!
Thank you! Welcome to the 5 Oaks Family, Pat!
I know all about them microbursts having watched a lot of videos on what it does to planes while they are flying. I've been in what is called "straight line winds" more than once. Straight line winds are more often confused with tornados than microbursts are. The only way to tell the difference between straight line winds and tornados is if the trees are twisted. Back where I used to live we had a nice sized forest with a ton of trees. It was there that we had the straight line winds those few times. We also had what seemed to have been an EF2 tornado briefly touch down in our woods as it took out a very large oak tree. The way you can tell it was a tornado was that the tree was twisted completely around 180 degree from the trunk. On the Fujita Tornado Damage Scale an EF0 has winds at 73 and deals light damage. Damage being: "Some damage to chimneys; branches broken off trees; shallow-rooted trees pushed over; sign boards damaged." EF1 has winds at 73-112 and deals moderate damage. Damage being: "Peels surface off roofs; mobile homes pushed off foundations or overturned; moving autos blown off roads." An EF2 hs winds at 113-157 and deals considerable damage. Damage being: "Roofs torn off frame houses; mobile homes demolished; boxcars overturned; large trees snapped or uprooted; light-object missiles generated; cars lifted off ground"
Prayers
