My universal remote seems to pair (when I press a button on it, the Craftsman light flashes on the device that opens the garage door). However, even though it flashes, the door doesn't open. Hitting the button attached to the garage doesn't have this problem. Any ideas?

Worked for mine but BOTH of them only work if you are standing directly underneath the remote even after putting in new batteries. Quite useless but thank you for the very clear instructions!

What if the door is closed and won't open and the light is blinking on a Chamberlin 1/3 hp opener?

Easy peasy? NOPE. My door opener unit shows the instruction right on the opener as to HOW to pair the remote using the "LEARN" button .....and it does not work. The remote batteries both read 3.3 volts. Now the questions is "where to go to find out what is wrong". .
