How To Running Braid & French Braid your horse for schooling - FULL TUTORIAL
This is a basic tutorial on how to execute a Running Braid vs. a French braid, the differences between them, and the different uses.
There are MANY many variables to consider when determining which braid to use and why, but the basics are as follows:
First, both of these braids are intended for breeds whose standards require long, natural manes. I highly suggest shortening your horse's mane and using rosette ("button") or hunter braids if the breed does not specifically require or show long standing tradition of displaying a long, natural mane.
The RUNNING braid is the easier braid to execute. If you are inexperienced, start with this one. It also looks better and holds better integrity in thicker manes such as those of Fresians and other draft breeds. It is ideal for super long thick manes, and lays lower and looser on the horse, so consider this braid for horses who are more sensitive.
The FRENCH braid is more attractive, but requires more skill to execute well. This braid is lovely for show (although, be sure to FINISH it for show, with yarn, as opposed to with bands as in this tutorial), for clinics, or for schooling/lessons. If your horse has a long mane that might not be quite as thick, such as some Iberian horses, quarter horses, or even some less fortunate Fresians, the running braid is the way to go. It is tighter to the mane, but moves with the neck very well.
If you have an specific questions, suggestions, or, God forbid, challenges, feel free to comment or e-mail me! I'm always happy to help a fellow Equestrian understand how to better turn out their horse, OR, justify my methods to anyone who doesn't understand them, as well as learn from someone else who has even more excellent ideas!

      Heavy Metal I keep seeing you throwing your unwanted opinion on everyones comments. How old are you? 12? We get it, you’re a little miss/mr know it all. Clearly nobody knows more about horses than you, right? I mean... you seem pretty flashy with all your knowledge there buddy. Just a little news flash for ya; everyone has their own vision and techniques on how they deal with THEIR horses, you would know that if you attended events and pony clubs. Which in sure you’ve done all of that, right? keep out of it and respect people’s ways. You don’t know everything

    how long can u leave either of these braids in at a time? hours? days?

    • @even1642
      @even1642 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Horse girl 88 a few bourse, you don't want to leave it in for to long, the hair can get thinned and damage the mane

    • @shanarama1965
      @shanarama1965 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      i think any braid should be taken out after up to two days, no more. if its a tight plait; thats iffy, because its so tightened it can damage the mane in the smallest amount if time. A running braid, or the braid in this video, i believe can stay as long as standard maintenance braids can. (2 days MAX)

    How long can the running braid last

    • @kaylaj4958
      @kaylaj4958 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Juan EspinozA depends on your horse my horse hers lasted 2 day and on my Shetland pony it lasted a week

    • @kaylaj4958
      @kaylaj4958 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Juan EspinozA but the French braid can last up to a month but don't recommend that because you need to keep the mane clean and it's hard to clean in a braid

    Nicely explained. I have a saddlebred stud I'm planning using for dressage, and I don't want to lose his glorious mane. I've always done a running braid, but now I'll have to try a French braid as well.

    • @hunthevalley

      it might not be tight enough. Do not let the horse lower his head after braiding. Hair spray.

      I buy yarn that is the same color as my horses mane and then tie sections of the braid together at regular intervals. That has really helped keep her braid from falling out.
