So the ghost leviathans were added to the game as a means to prevent the player from leaving the boundaries of the map. They actually have the most fleshed out lore of any creature in the game if you look well enough. The way the void versions work is quite simple. As soon as you enter you have a few seconds before an adult ghost leviiathan spawns with full aggro towards you. After enough time two more will show up. And if you somehow kill one (which is virtually impossible under those conditions) another should spawn. It may not seem like it either but the adult ghosts are over 100 meters long. That's godzilla territory in size. Early on there were concepts of what can be done with the void to prevent players from venturing out of bounds. The most interesting idea was giant tentacles coming out from the depths to prey on you. But they eventually settled on the ghost leviathans since it was a simpler thing to implement. By the way if you have time look up a certain mod called A GARGANTUAN RETURN - Teaser Trailer. But do this after you find a specific location called The Lost River and explore it. There's something interesting there you need to see. It's an incredible mod that stars a very interesting creature. And it's come a long way since that very first teaser
