Death of an Icon: What Happened to the SR-71 Blackbird
The SR-71 Blackbird is the fastest plane on earth. For three decades, the Blackbird was the premier reconnaissance platform operated by the United States Air Force and the CIA, giving the Soviet Union fits as they tried to come up with a way to counter it. They built the MiG-31 with the hopes of shooting it down, but they never did. So if the SR-71 was such a formidable weapon, why was it canceled with nothing taking its place? On this episode of Revealing History, we answer that question and more.

We make every attempt to be as accurate as possible in our storytelling by consulting multiple sources when possible and utilizing historically accurate images and videos. Because versions of events can change depending on the source, or because of the perspectives of those relating those events, or because we simply make a mistake, sometimes not all the facts are indeed, the facts. We also attempt when possible to use media in the form of images and videos that help to tell the story as accurately as possible. That can be challenging as there is oftentimes no media of a particular event. If you find that we are in error, please let us know in the comments and we will post the corrections here. The GRIM and BRUTAL Reality of a WWI Pilot

On this episode of Revealing History, we take a look at the grim and brut...

@@RevealingHistory Not as much as a corroborated contemporary reference, no. Any WW1 pilot autobiography that mentions ? Newspapers from the period? Magazines? I would like to see. Do you remember the ridiculous "whole nine yards" and how it supposedly referred to the length of ammo belts in aircraft? It became an accepted fact when it was a clearly used before the invention of aircraft. I'll be happy to accept that the "20 minuters" was a real expression when I see proof, until then I think it's more urban myth.

In 1983 I started working for a new start-up company in Silicon Valley. The company was less than one years old when I joined. The CEO of the company was General Johnny Johnson, and at the age of 18 years old he was piloting a B17 over Berlin. I asked him once if he had ever seen an ME-262, and he said that there was one time, in 1944, when something went through his formation going a lot faster than it should have been going. He was quite a guy, and in his company speeches he would sprinkle in tidbits like "The flak gets thicker as you get closer to the target" in reference to the opposition our company was facing trying to go public. I was very sad when he retired and was replaced, I never appreciated the other CEOs we had as much as I appreciated him.

These was an interesting story of the young British Ace Albert Ball. He disappeared over German lines on his last flight. Germans saw a plane crash on fire and the sight was investigated, Albert had no wounds and his aircraft had no bullet holes, making it look like an accident. However the Germans tried to give Manfred von Richthofen the "kill", but he was on leave. So the kill was given to his brother Lothar. Just goes to show what turds the Germans were and you have to wonder how many of Richthofen's score were real.

Example of fighter pilot given was not a fighter pilot but a person that pretends to be one, occasionally. The astronauts had to return all gifts given them. They were not allowed to profit from the excursion. Shepard also worked for a beer company. Unsure of his title but CEO's don't wear "blue collar" shirts with the company logo on them. As seen in "Moonshot".

I understand that while it appeared to the mission commander on Atlantis that NASA was downplaying the potential impacts of the damage received, he was less sanguine about their fate. He had apparently prepared a short speech of some choice words that he was going to get over the radio as a last call in the event that the shuttle did show signs of breaking up on re-entry. Thankfully, the speech was never needed.
