    Hi, I'm also building the Revell A380. I was afraid I had caused the atrocious fuselage fit myself by introducing heat (fixing the nose weight with hot glue) but apparently it's just made like that. I did use the force method, gluing section by section and for me it turned out completely fine without too much pain. Pre-working in warm water probably will indeed make it easier to get a good fit with less stress in the joint. Also, the fuselage halves don't line up quite right so I'd probably remove the locator pins and align them manually. Some other issues you may already be aware of, both of which are easy to fix: the shape of the landing lights is wrong (just use the decals or mask when painting) and the instructions incorrectly call for the doors of the body landing gear to be open (cut a slot for the gear leg to stick through it). Looking forward to more videos at the workbench!

    it's got the same dreadful fuselage fit as the boeing 777......... you have to glue the lower fuselage together first, let it totally cure and then wedge the upper fuselage to fit the other half..... it's about 2 mm out, i did mine a week ago.... the fuselage halves are very thin plastic and i think this is the issue....... the rest of the kit is ok.......... but take care that the wings aren't bent, but the A380 has thick wings so should be ok........... but the 777 has wings that are almost paper thin and very long.........this is the modern technology you see....... very thin lightweight wings; nothing like the old DC10............. you can't glue the fuselage together in one go because one side will always gap out while you're doing the other........... no other model aircraft has this problem...... one final issue, it has no internal bulkheads so be careful if you squeeze it later on...............Revell has got this really wrong.

    Hello Deon, , I've encountered a new technical problem, my tablet I use for you tube viewing software finally wore out, so I'm back to the Work station, ( which has a different OS), until I can figure out which direction to go. The Canberra really looks good. It has some of the most attractive aerodynamics to it. Its interesting that the larger scale model moulding will occasionally present bigger problems. Checking on different fillers there are so many related to wood however, I did find an interesting "home made" filler that might work. You use a super glue and baking soda, mix until you get the consistency you want. I've not d\tried it but it does sound interesting. I had a very unusual idea for your A380 if you can't get the airframe to go together - You could make "two" models. Using half a frame each, mounted in a picture frame - kind of a 3D look - then paint two livery schemes. Cutting off the wings or close them off. Although it would be beautiful in full scale. I was very excited to get my B-70 this last week from Italeri, that is certainly a model builders challenge. Looking forward to seeing how the Spirit of St Louis comes out, especially the decals. Cheers until the next chat

    modeler's chaos! I also have the same thing at times, but that is due to painting efficiency. For example,, if I am going to build a Japanese aircraft I will usually build two or three which have similar paint schemes so I can paint all the interiors at the same time, as well as painting all the exteriors at the same time.

    For me, since a lot of my work history was on injection molding floors, your channel usually offers me examples of lousy molding practices exposed, since you actually take time to show the discrepancy in fuselage sides etc 😂. And 👍for modeling chaos! I wish I had the energy to follow suit!!

    Hi Deon. Yet another huge aircraft. That Airbus is going to take some work. I have a question. I have now seen two of your Shackleton's and they both look like the Frog version. What have you done to the cockpit interior ? Have you built it up or have you left it as is.? I am toying with the idea of making it a bit more realistic. This will mean that I have to raise the seats up onto raised sections to create the sunken walkway between them. I will also have to make the side consoles and improve the dashboard. I wasn't able to see what you have done with yours. Did you build yours as per the instructions and then just paint it black ? I would like to know and see what you did. Could you maybe show me the one that hasn't got its cockpit glazing on yet. I,ve also thought about fleshing out the interiors of the wheel wells. Its a lot of work to do both these areas but I,m not sure if its worth it or if I can be bothered to do so , its not like much can be seen when finished. I,d like to hear your thoughts. Regards.

    Hello Deon, your technique to glue the Shackleton Bombay doors looks very interesting I have can old Otaki model of the C5A and two 1/48 Hercules. Those definitely have long gluing lines and I may have to use a similar technique. I'm also going to search for the C17, but no rush on that. I have even thought of scratch building a bulkhead to help on the C5 and Hercules.. They are on my future build list. For a sealer have you tried Mr. Surfacer 500 . It is a thick paint that can serve as a puddy type application.I've tried it several times , it takes several coats but drives like a paint.. I put tape on each side of the seam. Your seams are very good and this might work. I didn't realize you were building both Ryan's The Revell is the more detailed with an instrument panel and I believe two figures.. I think the challenge will be the nose and decals. I recall the Revell has a decal for the nose. Ironically inside the spinner there is a Swastica along with signatures of the Ryan team. That's just an historical note.My quest for the Canberra met with a budget brick wall, as did my hunt for the B1. However my B-70 should be arriving soon.On your search for a build of the B-1, try just inputting a Google search for " building model kits of the B1 or B70* that sometimes brings up the videos or kit manufactuer and when you click on them it will go to a a split screen. I go to " visit site" I'll retry the sequence and see how I did it the last time. Looking foward to continued videos on these builds. Cheers Bob

    Hello Deon, a very nice kit, how in the world do you find such an amazing variety. The decal sheet was quite nice and large. Another one to add to my hunt. . The US designation for this bomber was the B-57, and performed very well as a medium bomber in Southeast Asia. I'm not sure if all versions used the " shotgun shell" start up to spool the engines , it helped blow out a lot of carbon, ( like the original movie Flight of the Phoenix). Your gluing and painting skills will certainly make a 1very good looking model. I have used Scale Mates as well, a very detailed and interesting site. I found a lot of the UC- 64A Norseman, ( the aircraft Glenn Miller went MIA in during WW2), from a seller in Germany. The price was very good and ironically he found an excellent freight rate as well, which is unusual for shipment to the Colonies from Germany. Congratulations on a very nice acquisition. Oh, regarding the Airfix red box, I've noticed the larger kits are made in India Cheers Bob

    Dear Mr Workbench, There were two windows above the rear seats and one further on the port side for the navigator. The cockpit is somewhat detailed, whilst the bomb aimer's area is almost completely devoid of detail. You may choose to add some in, although, (I have found), not much of this detail will be seen owing to the dark coloured interior of aircraft of this vintage. The undercarriage doors you pointed out were the main undercarriage doors and there are two variants of wheels dependent upon which scheme you choose. The rocket launchers are wing mounted if you wish and the bombs will be installed into the bay. This is a large 1/48 scale kit and is quite straightforward project to complete. My own view is that it is a good palette for such modifications as you may wish to choose. Good luck! Regards, Z

    Hi Deon. You like them big don't you ? You always say that you don't have anymore shelf space well soon you will run out of ceiling space. That piece of glazing that you could not find a location for looks like there is a window on the port side just below the cockpit. As for the undercarriage detail well if your going to have it on the ground you won't be able to see much of it. I am sure that you have noticed that the Canberra sits very low to the ground , but its good to have the detail anyway. You,ve got to have it armed to the teeth. I must say that I was eyeing up a Italeri B57 the other day. All in black and fully armed up. I might have to look at that again. So the Hercules is retiring then. What are they replacing it with ? The C-117 or the Atlas 400 ? They are both impressive aircraft. I particularly like the Atlas with its big props. Let us know what they choose. Good video , regards.

    Hello Deon, a lot of work since your last video. I had no idea the Dornier was 1/144. The white Is quite spectacular and very smooth and glossy. Is it the paint that gives it the very smooth gloss or the use of your floor wax? The primer or under coat also make a big difference. I may have to start using the plastic spoon test, to astudy the impact of the finished combination. The spoon test is tedious because of the small surface area and having to mix small amounts for airbrushing but the advantage is not having to risk the model unless you have a lot of " paint mules" It is a challenge. I did have some excitement , I found a B- 70 at a good price. It is an Italleri kit from AMT moulds it is also 1/72. You have the best kit with the Commemorative version. And I think all of your current white work you are doing will definitely come in handy because of the size of the kit. It is like a big white whale. While searching I did find a wheels down version that was not bad, but you have to have the space.. I will keep you posted on its arrival, plus its most likely about 6 months out be for I build. Looking forward to your next video These are really helping me on setting up my build schedule Cheers Bob.

      Hello Deon, Trying again, I think it is my work station compared to my tablet. We are definitely in sync on our projects. I was just looking at the F117. You may recall Testor's brought out a theoretical concept on what it looked like called the F-19, when the real one came out, they were barely close, so I am looking for a kit of the real one to build next to it. I'm getting a much better idea on your sanding technique. Those decals on the Typhoon are amazing it will take time and patience on those. Yes, I believe you are correct on the big airline model it is an Airbus based on the nose configuration. The DC 3 will be a fun build. You certainly can find amazing bargains, that helmet for your son is amazing and you have so many good kits. The investigation on the tragedy continues. They have much more information now. It appears to be a lot of human error between ATC but mostly the helicopter. I do not like that Bombardier aircraft I believe it is not engineered well for it is purpose.

    Hi Deon. Good morning. When I saw that crash helmet I was wandering if you had started on a new type of models to start building. You have a very eclectic mix of models. Cars , bikes , modern and old aircraft and some armour. You have many fingers in many pies. I think that we modellers are all the same. I have at least four or five models on the go at one time. Now watching you and others are starting to build model aircraft again. At one of my clubs we have a lucky dip competition and I was lucky to get a Typhoon II by Italeri. Its a lovely kit but it is a world of grey , and the stencils are numerous. But it looks like a simole enough build so I don't see a major problems with it. I know that you have the Frog Shackleton like me and watching you talk about putting up the Vulcan I was thinking that you could maybe use the stand that comes with the 'Shackleton ' kit . Drill a hole in the base and screw it to your wall. Then you can have the Vulcan flying off of the wall. I have decided to sand my Shackleton smooth purely for aesthetic reasons. The shape and size is all that I am trying to impart. So a good paintjob will make that happen I think. But I appreciate what your saying. I think that your F117 has a charcoal black upper surfaces. I think that the image on the cover deceives the onlooker because of the angle that the aircraft is dipicted at. So I would go with a satin or matt black finish on the top. As for the Gnat I think that it is its association with the Red Arrows and its trainer career that makes it still popular. I know that there are models of the Harvard but I don't know of their age or quality. Anyway good luck with your workload. It would be nice to see your stash one day. Regards.

  • @c123bthunderpig
    @c123bthunderpig 8 วันที่ผ่านมา

    Help Deon, thanks for explaining the sanding effect , as I recall the Albatross you showed a while back might be a candidate for that.. I'll check my stash for some more samples. I'd like to do my Albatross in the civilian version the singer Jimmy Buffett had, which was completely smooth , He must have restored some how as there are no rivets, I need to conduct more research. This is also a video I will follow close as I have the same Spirit of St Louis kit, I I also have a Revell kit that has a little more detail. The Revell kit has decals to highlight the " jeweling " of the nose which is odd because the kit is nicely detailed. I guess that aspect of the kit would have been difficult to mould. I'll be anxious to see how you finish out your kit in that area I did a Ford Tri Motor years ago , and recall the decals were very difficult because of the metal pattern. The Spirit of St Louis is not that pronounced but still might offer a challange . I did like that last kit you used as a demo for its aerodynamic lines. I couldn't quite see the aircraft type but it looks like a De Havilland . The Vega is coming along nicely. Does Chicken have some competition? I thought I heard a dog in the background Once again very helpful video Cheers Bob

    Hi Deon. The Vega is really coming together now. That undercarriage looks very intricate but strurdy none the less. I don,t know if you have considered filler instead of plasticard on the inside of the wing. I know that you wouldn't screw it up. I really like your precision in your work. The tailplanes and rudder are a perfect example. As for the 'Spirit of St Louis's wing maybe a strip of flat brass sheet would give you the strength that you require. Now the rivet problem. As you know I have been tackling a Shackleton MR.3 recently. Its still very early days on that project but I have decided to sand off all of the rivets. I am looking at going for a smooth finish on this kit. I may do some scribing when the build is complete. The reason for this is that I recently watched a video on YT of the preserved SAAF Shackleton and as they were pulling it out of the hanger and preparing it for flight I noticed how smooth it looked. It also had a lovely gloss finish paintjob. So that is the route that I want to go. A lot if not all of Airfix's aircraft were festooned with them so do you keep them or not ? I remember building their AC-47 gunship many years ago and that is rivet city. So for my 'Shack' build its going to be smooth. I look forward to seeing the Vega finished. I know it will look stunning. Regards.

    I like the old Airfix raised rivets, some of the kits looked very accurate when compared to photos of the real aircraft, I try to keep from sanding them off.

    i really dont know why planes and helicoptors dont interact well. have you ever consider, making a model, of a , mid air collision of two aircrafts? is there even a supplier that sells models you can build that are a moment in time of a collision at its best!? thats a idea??!

      lol - i know... so either i have minions or theres voodoo afoot. But no seriously I'm just not set up for actually recording general model building, and the house is noisy with people. Plus most of it might be pretty boring with sanding, fitting, sanding glueing . etc.

    Hi Deon. You have done a good job on the 2CV. Those parts came out quite nicely. I still think that the F1 front wheels might be big enough on the back of that car and then use the original kit wheels on the front , but thats my personal choice. As for the boot lid you could use it as the spoiler like on the Fiat 500 Abarth race car. Or use the F1 front spoiler on the back of the roof. Offer them up to the car with a bit of blue tac to see what you think. The Winnie Mae is getting there. I thought that the wings looked square enough. I think that maybe a little more work will be needed to close that gap but you may still need to end up using some filler. The B1 is still at the prepping stage but its good to see your thinking on the painting. It looks like a pretty smooth surface so I can't really see you having to many issues. Good video , regards.

    another viewer in the north with insomnia meaning I can catch your video earlier than normal. I am fascinated by your use of sanding for highlighting. Do you think it would be possible to use the technique effectively on aircraft painted in RAF "fast silver" such as the Vampire? Really enjoying the work you are doing on the Vega and Citroen as well.

    • @deonjansen
      @deonjansen 9 วันที่ผ่านมา

      it can be used on silver but id say its less effective and does depend on the plastic colour and basecoat colours underneath, you need a dark grey plastic or black and depending on the nature of the silver, you stand to dull it to a degree. anythings possible so best is to practice on a scrappy model at first

    Hello Deon - a bit of insomnia up here in the Northern Hemisphere, which is good as can catch your video. I know you have done the sanding of the surface before for detail highlights, the most recent being the Vulcan, I've not tried that technique and will be anxiously following your progress in the B1. My quest to locate a B1 and B-70 has not been fruitful. . There are some available but still out of budget. I found a B70 in 1/180 scale - an old , a Lindberg kit I have my eye on. I did find three kits at a wonderful price from a hobby shop sale in Canada, so I'm certainly not without exciting acquisitions and my quest continues. Happy Modeling Cheers Bob

      Yes dont go spending more than a small amount, wait for models at reasonable prices to come across your path. Paying high prices puts a sour taste in ones mouth. There are enough models around to keep busy on other projects. Im just watching news on the Regional jet and Blackhawk crash

    • @c123bthunderpig
      @c123bthunderpig 10 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @deonjansen yes I agree on model pricing, I've had good luck being patient. Something went very wrong with that crash. I've been to Regan Airport several times. There are three major airports with heavy traffic I'm afraid a very bad mistake was made by pilots and ATC. They say the Blackhawk was " training" which doesn't make since in that area. . I think the insomnia has worn off, I hope they have more news in the morning and maybe survivors

    • @deonjansen
      @deonjansen 9 วันที่ผ่านมา

      No survivors, 67 dead. it was stated as a training mission simply because it wasnt an official VIP mission, so its not that actual training was occurring. It was an accident waiting to happen because technically those 2 routes cross without valid enough separation in altitude, helicopter was at 300' instead of 200' but also was clearly not visual with the correct aircraft on finals, so double fault on the blackhawk, but a setup which allowed this to happen too easily. radio frequencies also an issue. ATC should really have emphasized the number of aircraft in the area, number of aircraft on approach, and probably diverted the path a bit, but this is all standard operating procudere for the area, so really - just a setup destined to fail at some point and now it did. There will be many local changes due to this accident, including frequency changes im sure

    Hello Deon, the Vulcan is amazing, with all the challenges it presented , it is a very stunning model. I'm going to carefully look at mine and when I get ready may just do he white scheme based on your experience even though it calls for the grey green camo. I absolutely love that B70, I had no idea there was such a fantastic kit of that made. Definitely wheels up to show the advanced design. Its a shame that program was cancelled because of the tremendous amount of data accumulated, it actually used less fuel at top speed and the aerodynamic data was transfered to the Space Shuttle program. Another kit to put on my quest list. Once again the Vulcan is awesome. Standing by for the B1 and that beautiful B70. Cheers Bob

    Hi Deon. Sorry about the mis identification of your nationality , go N.Z. I am very pleased to see the Vulcan is completed , you have done a good job. I have been lucky enough to have seen the Vulcan many times at airshows and it is an impressive beast. I don,t know if it ever got down to your part of the world. Looking at the roundels they look like the one's I have on my Shackleton. Very faded. More pink and pale blue. I don,t know if they are supposed to be that colour on the Vulcan or if you have had the same problem as me. The Winnie Mae is coming along nicely. I did think that the glazing would be a problem. The way that it is embedded into the wing would always have been a problem area. Now the Valkyrie. Wow what an aircraft. I never realised that it was that big , thats a huge model. I hope that you have plenty of glue. If your going to go wheels up you might want to think about making a stand for it. I have recntly done a FW190 and what I did was glue a small piece of plastic tube inside the fuselage mounted vertically. I drilled a small hole into bottom of the wing then I got a wire coat hanger cut it to the required length bent the ends and now all I have to do is push it into the hole , the other end plugs into a block of wood. Simple. If you want a stand for the Valkyrie it will need to be a bit more substantial. I look forward to seeing you build it. Nice work. Regards.

      Brian, the Vulcan did get down to NZ in the 1950's - 1970's. One of them famously almost crashed at the opening of Wellington airport in 1959. It touched down short of the runway and destroyed the left landing gear, and punctured the fuel tank, then took off again and made a well-controlled crash landing at Ohakea airbase.

    Hello Deon, on the positive side that Vulcan is an excellent platform for improving your filler skills, I learned a lot from this video. Over the years using the Xacto blades I have developed many distinctive scars on several fingers, one required stiches, it is indeed a risk. Oh, someday if you're looking for another bash kit, the Russians took the engines from a Mig 25 I believe they retired that because it was too difficult to maintain because of airframe metals capable of handling the engines However, they took the engines out mounted them on a truck and use them to de-ice the runways.The cruise missiles for your B1 are strictly from the imagination of the model manufacture The B1 has a remarkable ordnance range, and have experimented with external pylons but there are several technical problems considering the aircraft missions. The ordinance delivery system is a very sophisticated internal system.. It can carry JASSMs but internally. It will be very interesting to see how the Vulcan finishes out. Cheers Bob

    Hi Deon. Thankyou for the name drop and yes it was me who asked you about the Shackleton decals. I have the original Frog one's that you showed , (small sheet). My sheet is heavily curved and very faded , I am hoping that the guy who gave me the model has some spare one's. He has since told me that he bought a load more a long time ago when you could get them easily so I am hoping that he can find them in his stash , fingers crssed. I could buy some but I am on a very limited budget and even in the UK they are quite expensive. I was hoping to do a SAAF version because everyone does the RAF version. Thankyou for showing me what you have. I would not expect you to send me any but I know that you are in S.A. All I would ask of you is that if and when you build your kit that if you have any decals left over please let me know. Now onto the Vulcan. These older Airfix kits are a challenge. You have had to use a lot of filler in places and I don,t think that you have finished with it yet. Holding a Vulcan to paint is difficult. I would go in through the intakes , there bigger so you could cut a couple of pieces of softwood with a slight wedge shape and then make a small frame from a coathanger , drill two small holes in the wood and then push the coathanger ends into the holes in the wood , it sounds complicated but I am sure that you understand what I mean. The other option is to go in through one of the engine exhausts , thats before you close them up. No cutting or filling . I look forward to seeing how you get on. Regards.
