THE KHOEKHOE SAGA - Trailer
The Khoekhoe Saga chronicles the history of South Africa’s Khoekhoe (Hottentot) herders as never told before. Set against the backdrop of breath-taking land and seascapes, comes a story of heroes and villains as an ancient culture clash with the world’s largest multinational company, the Dutch East India Company and later Great Britain.
Told from the perspective of Khoekhoe descendants, this epic film also explores the rich cultural legacy of a forgotten people. The film traces the origins and dispersement of the Khoekhoe in the south of the African Continent. It also explains the difference between the Khoekhoe and the San (Bushmen). Tribes settled all along the Cape coast as far as the Fish River in the east and the mouth of the Gariep (Orange River) in the north-west.
For decades school text books totally ignored the Khoekhoe history, their resistance to the European settlement and subsequent dispossession of land, livestock and water resources. Khoekhoe herders fought bravely with fire hardened sticks against a military force armed with cannons and muskets. The first prisoners on Robben Island were the Khoekhoe leaders, such as Autshumato and David Stuurman, who dared to resist the Dutch VOC.
Within a fifty year period the Khoekhoe lost all their land and water resources, and their status dwindled from being owners of large herds of livestock to servants on farms. Many migrated north to escape colonial rule. One such group are the Griqua, a group mixed with Khoekhoe and runaway slaves led by Adam Kok.
Presenter, Rehane Abrahams spends time with descendants of the Hessequa and also takes a country-wide journey to trace the trek of the Griqua. She finally arrives in Kokstad where she meets descendants of those that made the journey more than a hundred years ago. Dr Willa Boezak gives us insight into the spiritual life of the Khoekhoe and explain the reasons for their quick adaptation and conversion to Christianity.
This landmark film uses modern interpretation of historical records by historians, rock art, and excavations by archaeologists, to reveal a new narrative. It’s a story of survival of one of the oldest cultures on the planet, who faced an unexpected threat to its way of life in 1652 when the Dutch East India Company sets up a refreshment station at the Southern Cape of Africa. It is a thought-provoking film that explores the cultural genocide, and dispossession of land inflicted on South Africa’s indigenous people, the Khoekhoe. Today Khoekhoe, San and Griqua revivalists demand recognition of this neglected history and seek reparation for the injustices of the not too distant past.

Pest Act of 1770 - Did you know Legislation On Indigenous People in South Africa? Bushmen, Koranas, Griqua Bergenaars & Khoi-Khoi were declared a plague and were exterminated by the commandos. Legislation was extracted from the Statute Books in 1798. In this period of 28 years, 7 months and 19 days, crime/genocide against humanity/the indigenous population was implemented to the extreme. 1 987 000 land people from the Point of Africa were killed in this dark period of Africa for no reason. Bags full of human heads of the children of the land were taken to the Cape after a hunting session and were evaluated for land, animals, slaves, position and money. Bodies of the murdered were many times chopped up and fed to the dogs of the killers. Their dogs were bred and trained as native hunting dogs. This legislation classified the indigenous children/peoples as animals. Heads of the Bushmen, Khoi-Khoi, Koranas & Griquas were coveted trophies and were displayed along with wild animal heads on the walls of their houses. Children of the land people, the Bushmen, were captured after such a hunting session and kept in specially made pens like animals until the next hunting session. A day before the hunt they were released and big bets were made/placed on the death of our children as to who could track down and shoot the released children'. Drinking water holes of indigenous people were poisoned with a slow-acting poison known as '!kita'. It had a 21 day cycle that consumed the body like AIDS, only much, much faster. An attack by the Commandos was very simple, nothing and no one is left alive. The sinews of the livestock that were not shot were cut so that they could be eaten by the wild animals without being able to defend themselves. Wives and daughters of the indigenous land people were brutally molested and raped where they were killed after these evil acts. Pregnant women's children were cut up alive and burned in the fire.

It must be remembered that the KHOI and SAN were forced to move and even scatter , because of the ever expanding presence of the black Bantu/ Nguni tribes . Some khoi clans were completely wiped out , their cattle stolen and their women and children forcefully adopted into the nguni tribes . The Bushmen/San suffered similar fates , preferring to take refuge in caves .

Funny how, you guys push multi-racial people as khoe, who have ancestry, from all over the globe, with Khoe being in the minority (only the coloureds of the Northern Cape, have large amounts of Khoe ancestry). Majority of coloureds have in fact mainly western/Asiatic customs, names, languages and ancestry. But will ignore, the Nama/Nguni/Basotho/Herero etc, whose languages contain large amounts of Khoe, sometimes even serve as the root of the language (Xhosa, Nama, Herero, Damara), they orginal would pray to Khoe 'gods' such as Qamata, their music is of Khoe origin, Umrhube/Umngokolo, have khoe originating surnames, and have anywhere between, 20-60% Khoe ancestry. But yeah, lets bring a majority, Indo-European West African mix with no language or customary roots, to represent the "Khoe'.

@@rudolfrieger2350 Thanks for the correction. There are still plenty "pure' Khoe communities, in Namibia, Botswana, Northern Cape and Eastern Cape. I can give you contacts, as I have parts of my family in Southern Namibia, that are 'pure', or I can give you contacts to the more hybridized part of my family, that are in the Northern and Eastern Cape, where they typically live in Nama, San, Xhosa, Sotho and Tswana clustered communities. Its just always tiring, seeing multi-racial people, mainly of Asian/European heritage, that don't speak our languages, or practice our customs, speaking for us. Its almost as if the world thinks we no longer exist. To such an extent that mixed race people have to speak for us.
