Build Log: Sig Clipped Wing Cub Kit - Electric Conversion
I decided that I needed a pandemic project in March of 2021, something to do while I was waiting for the vaccine roll out. I'd always wanted to build a kit model from a box of wood, so figured that with all this stay at home free time, I'd build one. This is my first build a kit plane that is not laser cut, and my first time working with Ultra cote covering. The build started in April of 2021 and finished just a few days into the new year of 2022.
This is my build log and first flight of a Sig Model 1/6th Scale Clipped Wing Cub. Build time was roughly 8 months of evenings, some heavy weekend work, and lots of learning along the way. I definitely should have started on an easier model, but for me, the difficulty was half the fun.
The total number of hours spent has been lost, I don't know. Somewhere between 400-500 probably. I fully understood there wasn't a lot of documentation in this kit going in (I think it's roughly 12 pages and doesn't exactly give you a play by play, you just have to know). I did find some instructions in old internet forums that gave me some ideas of what I wanted to do, could do, and so on. In the end, I built it as shown. While there are definitely some things I would have done differently/would like to re-do, I also would just like to fly it for a bit and enjoy it.
If you're thinking of building one of these gorgeous planes, maybe my build log serves you in some way. In ways to do and not to do, I'm sure.
I fully recognize the frames move by quickly. I had over 1000 photos to share of my build log and wanted to show as much of the process as I documented. So, in order to show as much as I could, and not make it a 40 minute video, I set the frame rate to 1 photo per second. If you wish, you may slow the video down on your own (and set to whatever music you like) for your viewing pleasure.

Goofing around indoors with the Beebrain V2 stock on HV Nectar batteries. Recorded from an LCD. I need a better way to do this, but my equipment is old, I know. Would love to be able to afford a new head set. White Ghosting is not as bad in the goggles head set, but still there. Going to attempt using black electrical tape on back of camera to fix it.

    I am thinking of building. Can you tell me what electric system you used? I don’t know a thing about electric motors or batteries. Your flys better than any electric I have seen. Thanks for the video.

      Hi, I'm running a Cobra C-3515/14 Motor Kv950 with a Cobra 60A ESC, a 5amp 3s 30C lipo with a 12x6 APC prop. This is a sig models j3 Clipped wing cub. This build took me just under 9 months and 400+ hours. I can't tell if you've flown gas model aircraft prior, or if you're looking for a first model. If you've flown before, there's enough power to do a wide variety of scale aerobatics with this power set up, but you'll need to be careful, as it will fly scale. If you've never flown an RC model before, I would not recommend this for a first aircraft.

      @@TheTavFox Thank you for getting back to me. The club has gone all electric. I did not want to. I am going to build a new Cub with your setup an see how I like it. I enjoyed flying one with a Fox .29. I love the sound of engines an the smell of burnt castor fuel. From your video everything seems to have been thought out well. I built fast when I was young an lost a lot of gear, but patience with accuracy is best I find. I wish I could do a video of mine to show how it will fly, but following your setup I think I will be ok.

      @@cwradio4571 The biggest recommendations I can make with Sig's model is to keep the tail section/empennage as light as possible. I would also recommend planning your battery bay set up before installing the firewall/balsa wood structures around the cowling/nose. I have nearly 4-5 oz of nose weight to get it to balance right, even with a massively oversized battery for the plane. There are a lot of options with how you can make the wing struts. Some people opt for removable and foldable cleaves to make the wing easier to remove for transport. I do not like to disassemble planes for transport, so mine is harder to remove/is more fixed. Lastly, I built the model as specified in the plans. There is no real "center spar" like modern models I'm accustomed to building. Were I making it again, I'd have replaced the wing supports with bass wood instead of using balsa or inlaid some carbon fiber to give the wing more strength. The struts are completely functional, and while I have been able to preform spins, loops, rolls, hammer heads and a variety of other scale maneuvers without the wings folding up, it still feels spooky to me.

    • @cwradio4571
      @cwradio4571 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@TheTavFox I will take all these considerations to heart. I agree the wing needs a better design. I never liked it from the beginning. Sig carries some nice gear but, this plane needs a major upgrade. I would like to see a new cowling design as well. I do plan on making a better strut mount as well. If they would upgrade the design the struts could be made easier.i will keep in touch, thanks again

    Great job. I built the same one(first build too) and fit it as a nitro. Just going to change to electric too. What motor did you use?

    • @TheTavFox
      @TheTavFox 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you! I'm running a Cobra C-3515/14 Motor Kv950 with a Cobra 60A ESC, a 5amp 3s 30C lipo with a 12x6 APC prop. I'm not 100% sold on this motor set up, only 3 flights on the plane so far. Feels like it could use a little more power, but it has enough power for scale flight. Not sure what flight times will be on the 5amp 3s pack. I landed with 11.9V remaining on the battery after 7 minutes of flight time and everything was cool to the touch. Should be interesting.

    • @TheTavFox
      @TheTavFox 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      So now I've had a few more flights on it and I think the motor I mentioned previously with the 12x6 prop is plenty of power for the plane to fly scale. I come in at around 5.5 lbs Anything heavier than that and I'd recommend a larger motor. Anything lighter and it'll fly nicer!

I want to know how that bullshit racist school get to target me and give me bicycle tickets that come to $1000 and suspended my license over what they say is riding my bike with no light and running a stop sign that never happened? I know that school is racist because when I live there the school didn't do anything about wite kids writing kkk on a black kids wall and than they put a bike lock around his neck and lock him to a bed. SMH old racist SJSU and their campus police are a bunch of racist punks too.
