Fascinating❤
I love Saint Hildegard. But she was not the first female composer to be known. It was Kassia. ❤
Really nice video. However, the music is too loud. Distracted from the speakers.
Thank you for the history about St. Hildegard. As God wills, may the Spirit open eyes to see Jesus appearing to the modern women Apostles: Saints Gertrude the Great, Margaret Mary, and Maria Faustina.
Thank You!
St. Kassia (Kassiani), (between 805; and 810 - before 865) was a Byzantine-Greek composer, hymnographer, and poet. and the first female composer to be documented by name. She holds a unique place in Byzantine music as the only known woman whose music appears in the Byzantine liturgy. Approximately 23 - more or less - of her hymns are extant, most of which are stichera. She was an abbess of a convent in the west of Constantinople. Kassiani wrote many hymns that are still used in the Byzantine liturgy today. She became known to the great Theodore the Studite while she was still a young girl, and he was impressed by her learning and literary style She not only wrote spiritual poetry but also composed music to accompany it. She is regarded as an "exceptional and rare phenomenon" among composers of her day. Her oeuvre as a whole demonstrates influence from classical Greek literature, which she studied early in life. The most famous of her compositions is the eponymous Hymn of Kassia (also known as the Troparion of Kassiani), which is chanted each year for Great and Holy Wednesday as a doxastichon occurring at the end of the aposticha of orthros and the lamp-lighting psalms of the Presanctified Liturgy. The music for the hymn is slow, sorrowful, and plaintive, lasting about ten to twenty minutes, depending on tempo and style of execution. It requires a very wide vocal range and is considered one of the most demanding pieces - if not the most demanding one - of solo Byzantine chant, and cantors take great pride in delivering it well. It is also sung by choirs in unison, often underpinned by Byzantine vocal bass drone. 261 works of secular literature are attributed to Kassia, consisting of epigrams and gnomic verses. Never set to music, they were written during the reigns of Theophilos and Michael III. Akin to the rest of her oeuvre, her writings demonstrate an influence from classical Greek literature, which she studied early in life. These literary genres were chiefly dominated by men, so her contributions would have been unusual; Byzantinist Andrew Mellas noted that "perhaps this was an advantage for Kassia and accounts for her originality". The genre of epigrams existed from classical antiquity and into the Byzantine Empire, being defined as somewhere in between the scope of lyric and epic poetry. Their exact organization was unformalized, ranging from the use of couplets to iambic pentameter, among others. The works are generally rooted in the long tradition, though they include her own unique innovations.[18] In this genre, she is credited with first synthesizing secular and sacred values. While the works are secular in character, they promoted ethical teachings for the lives of Christians. Byzantinist Marc Lauxtermann [de] described this approach as "An osmosis of ancient wisdom and monastic truth." Kassia abandoned typical themes found in Greek prosody, preferring to discuss more individual and personal issues. The themes Kassia covers include ethical ideals and weaknesses (her examples include 'foolishness' and 'friendship'), social structures, femininity (particularly 'beauty'),, and the defense of women's rights. This approach would have made the genre more relevant and accessible to the Byzantine people, though the extent of her epigrams' circulation remains unclear. Her epigrams are particularly reminiscent of similar works by her colleague Theodore the Studite and are characterized by a concise and straightforward presentation, often including witty or humorous elements. According to Mellas, it is probable that they were "a form of Catechism for her nuns and perhaps any friends of the monastery." The Orthodox Church celebrates Saint Kassiani's feast day on 7 September. Because of her strong defense of icon veneration, she is often depicted as the icon of the Sunday of Orthodoxy (the First Sunday of Great Lent). In 2022, Kassia was officially added to the Episcopal Church liturgical calendar with a feast day on 7 September. If you look for her name, you can hear a CD of her works and the Hymn here on YouYube. She is a worthy predecessor of Hildegard. Her music is not inferior to Hildegard's - it reflects the heritage of the ancient Roman Empire and Byzantine tradition.
Thank you! I love Hildegard’s music❤️ it makes my heart sing. I love that she was a polymath, a Renaissance woman!
“Liber Scivius,” literally… “Know The Way”… I am compelled by the true Divine Light, the Holy Motherverse Sophia, to attest that Hildegard von Bingen was Her genuine and enlightened daughter, and an assignation of of “Matreus en Excelcis Dea,” the “Divine Feminine,” that knows no encumbrance save the Unknowable “One Without A Second,” may Her Glory know no boundaries… About a thousand years before her time, Lao Xi, in far off Cathay, also styled it “the Way,” when the parallelogram-atic scriptures of Jesus the Blessed Nazarene’s “Gnostic Gospels” were once buried in a desert, therein awaiting a liberation and surety for the ignoble and uncountable, and so verily deeply slumbering, unwashed masses… Two hundred and fifty years or so later, the so very well penised Papal pyrrhic priapics, tortured Jeanne d’ Arc for forty days, and then burned her at the stake for being a “witch”… see the painting “Joan of Arc is interrogated by The Cardinal of Winchester in her prison, 1431” by Paul Delaroche (1797-1856) if there are any lingering doubts or confusion in this matter, and make no mistake, payback will be besotted banshee bitch, I tell you what… btw, a millennia later, the “Holy Christian Church,” in their beatific wisdom, said, “what’s past is past,” and then magnanimously “canonized” her… “With fronds like these, who needs anemones?” - Mae West For all the good it will do you, my so benighted brahmins , “gird thy loins,” we’re comin’ for ya… This one’s “for the Girls”… best of luck with your ever diminishing dancing dervishes, and as mom always used to say, “write if you get work”… Sorry if I have perhaps upset anyone’s applecart, but Sophia requires my due attention to details, and I wouldn’t think of letting Her down… To the Conti’s and company, a truly gorgeous and liberating post, you bring light to offset the awful and so often times ambient darkness… - Namaste, Glenn Jones (“en route”)
Her music is difficult to sing.
Prayers for humility for all of us wanting to be seen as unruly mystics. Saint Hildegard, pray for us.
The sound track is a distraction. We don't need Downton Abbey's aural wallpaper.
Her music is very well appreciated when one is on mushrooms.... I hear from a friend.
Set and Setting noted.

Incredibly Beautiful ❤️🙏🏼❤️
I was recommended this video at the perfect time. Thank you.
Glad it was helpful!
Thank you Michael for this sharing and deep dive into Saint Hildegard’s musical creation.
I'm a 70 year old guy hadn't heard of her when I studied piano, organ and classical music. When I first listened to Canticles of Ecstasy in my 30s, I cried, was captivated and mesmerized. Later, when I played the video of the Order of The Virtues to a woman friend of mine, she cried too. Hidlegarde lives in my heart and mind forever🛐🕊️♀️🪷🙏🏼💟
I'm already an unruly mystic. I was going to bed when I heard "Hildagard" turned on TH-cam to find meditation music and this video was the first thing I saw. At this stage I'm not surprised. I know this is how good works, but it still makes me smile. Thank you for the video Xox
Franco was a good catholic. He fought against communism..the same who murdered thousands of catholic priests and nuns. Long live Franco .
She was a catholic saint.
Why do you interview New Agers and pagans. St Hildegard was Catholic and to be a saint, she would never interpret nature as these people do, who leave Jesus Christ out or reduce Him to "consciousness."
We may not know if they are new-agers and pagans, but it seems odd that most of the interviewees are not Catholic. What was the purpose of this video, to encourage people to be rebels?
@@jeme7339 I'm pretty sure they are because I was there once, until Our Lord came to me and I left it all behind.
Have you read her translated writings (from Latin) at 3:30 am when the world is quiet and there are no distractions? I did.
To accept that we can all walk saintly and mystical lives, and if that means being a rebel against injustices, so Yes.
Catholics are not required by law yet to wear their religion on their sleeve. Or pagans. Nor did I ask. We are All God's Children.
Wowowowo!!!! I love it!!!!!!
Thank you for that lovely wee film about Hildegard von Bingen. I could have listed to much more than that🙏😉
Our pleasure!
You made a film about Hildegard of Bingen , but at 2 min in you didn't even pronounce her name correctly? It's Bingen, not Bingham.
Just breathe... I am not perfection.
@@SaintHildegardMoviebless you 🙏🏻🌟I appreciate your message ❤
I have two friends who were a former nun and priest. Both had said to me, separately on an occasion, that they were taught in the church to understand God; they were never taught how to understand spirituality. I'm reading many comments here that are very critical of this video and its unorthodox language, so to speak. What we are hearing here is not 'new age.' It is simply a beautiful blending of society's evolution of our own newer understanding today that there is no God without spirituality. The interpretations are the same. We need to be more open-minded - just like Hildegard's people in their day. She was certainly ahead of her time. Or rather, she was perfectly incarnated for her time, so that God could guide her to those people who would assist her in being just the legend that was necessary; for their time, and ours today. I thank you for this video, as I've listened and loved Hildegard's music. And now, I can say I've learned so much more about this woman, whom the heavens allowed to express her creativity for all generations to follow and be blessed by. May I add a side note: that I noticed she passed shortly before the birth of St. Francis of Assisi. Curious. Did she reincarnate as Francis? Who knows. There is wonderment galore abounding for those whose imaginations are blushing with more questions of 'why we are here.' ;)
Thank you for your additional comments. I understand that some people are seeing something different based upon their own relationship with Jesus. I am okay with that. The Head Abbess of Hildegard von Bingen Abbey (Benedictine) in Bingen, Germany personally gave me her approval of the film after I first screened it at the 2014 International Hildegard Congress. She said these kind words of "thank you for making her story more accessible to a younger audience. She is now in her eighties, and has clearly devoted her entire life as a Bride of Christ. I am not sure if those that speak differently in the comments are more qualified than her. But I respect their choice to say something different.
"ORA ET LABORA". THE BENEDICTINE RULE!
Thank you very much for this video. I always want to know more of her life. She was a way ahead of her time.
You're very 🤗
I wish that people stop refering to God as a male. The word God is plural . We are now in 2024 and still God is referd to as a male... whake up and clean up the language, who are holding women back
Old habits die hard.
This is terrible, NOT Catholic God have mercy 😢
Very informative! Thank You!
Thanks for watching!
Wonderful. So inspiring
Love ❤❤❤
This goes with the kabala, Maslow’s hierarchy of needs-individuation, self actualization with transcendent function
Creativity allowed me to formulate a dialogue with the unconscious and to conduct auto psychotherapy and switch the locus of control
Art is the only way I'm going to get through the disaster of my country. I think that's pretty typical response to oppression, creativity.
Want to listen but can’t take music
Turn on the closed captions and turn off the sound.
Good suggestion. The music was properly mixed for theater screenings.
St Hildegard looks pretty glam in your cover picture for the video! I think she had a glamour photo shoot! ;)
There are no known images of her likeness during her lifetime so this is an artistic interpretation (like later images).
🤍
💖
The spirit of creativity is an aspect of the Divine given freely to all who seek it and who love it. St Hildegard is one who shows us the way. ❤
Exactly. Stop with the Music already. I clicking off this
Our very existence is Awareness having a relationship with Itself.
why oh why does loud distracting music overshadow wonderful videos like this, i find it difficult to hear what is being said as the music is louder than the person speaking thank you for the beautiful knowledge shared
I agree. However, music is often used to seduce moods of the audience.
@helenpatterson3858 yes I'm aware of the power of music to hepe up emotions.. I'm really saying the volume of the music is on some videos are louder than the speakers voice. Speaking from my own experience I find it distracting.. its also not helpful for people who have hearing problems..
Sorry to hear. I would suggest turning off the music and turning on the captions. The dialog and music was stereo mixed professionally for theatrical, and might sound different depending upon your own device of choice. I would suggest watching via a television through a streaming service like Amazon (full movie) or via Chromecast from TH-cam.
Thank you, I'd never heard of Saint Hildegard of Bingen, as a creative, this really speaks to me. ❤ (and I love that it's not some AI generated piece of crap)
Beautiful meditation at the end ❤
It really is!
She was well ahead of her times. Such an inspiration!
Thank you for sharing✨
Thanks for watching!
What a wonderful video! Good job, thank you for sharing!
