2024 Kentucky Bourbon Regatta Race 4
Follow the Brothers on Gadzooks! through Race 4 of the 2024 Kentucky Bourbon Regatta on beautiful Kentucky Lake. Winds pick up as they start the race at the favored end at the gun. Excitement ensues upwind with a tight cross opportunity just before the first windward mark. The fleet spreads and mixes throughout the race, putting the Gadzooks! on track for a first-ever regatta win. Do they pull it out?

Watch Gadzooks! for the first half of this drifter work their way around to the windward mark. RC called for twice around this W/L course, but our battery died after 1.5 legs. We were still able to identify things we should improve on. Can you help us out?

Mast Rake on Flying Scot: Setting & Measuring
มุมมอง 3122 หลายเดือนก่อน
There are several challenges with properly measuring and setting the mast rake on a Flying Scot. This video discusses the various techniques of measuring and cross-references the aft rake with the forward rake, identifying where the aft rake shackle should be. The best practice is to raise the main halyard with the 100’ tape already attached in the mast-down position so you know exactly what th...

Thanks for sharing! I'm contemplating a 3-camera program and switching to the DJI ecosystem where I put a 360 on the tiller as you do, but mount a second 360 on the boom about about a foot forward of the point where the vang attaches to the boom. This makes for some great shots during the hoist and will never tangle with your jib sheets or get bumped by the crew because they avoid the vang when the boom swings through, with few exceptions. The boom mount would be universal c-clamp mount or similar. I want to test a "jib cam" in Tampa next week that suctions cups to side of the starboard seat forward of the crew facing upward. This should make for a great shot of the jib and and jib leach when on port tack, but is probably garbage on starboard tack. Any reasons why you think I might want to reconsider my approach? DJI Action 5 has 4 hour power in one battery and youtube says it connects seamlessly to my DJI Mic 2 transmitters (6 hours of battery life) without needing a receiver. If the soon-to-be-released DJI 360 is up to typical DJI standards, I should be able to have all three cameras start simultaneously when I hit the button the DJI remote and the sound from 2 wireless mics already synced. It would be lovely if the new DJI 360 also connected to two wireless DJI mics and had 4 hour power in one battery. It would be so nice to be able to be able to turn all your cameras on 10 minutes before the start of the first race and not have to replace a battery. Lining up each file would be so much easier and make multi-cam editing in DaVinci Resolve less cumbersome. I had resigned that I would only doing the first race of the day going forward because battery changes between races does not allow much time to relax and decompress between races. I certainly don't expect my crew to understand how to operate the camera and we're there to have fun. So basically, I hope I do really well in the first race. : -) Besides, editing one race with multiple of cameras give me plenty of work to do when I get home. I'm REALLY hoping for big battery life on the DJI 360 and also hope the DJI remote works with multiple cameras as advertised. Can't wait for DJI to make the announcement. If the DJI 360 doesn't look promising, I'm going with the Insta 360 because the quality of your videos are better then what I was able to produce with the Go Pro Max. Thanks so much for your efforts and sharing your content. It's nice to have action camera and video editing enthusiasts we can turn to for help and insight. Cheers!
Thanks Eric. Indeed, I have thought the boom mount makes more sense than just atop the deck behind the mast step, and agree that would be useful, but I've been hesitant to drill another hole in the boom, given the strain that's already on it under full vang. That said, a C-clamp style mount might work really well. I'm not sure a suction cup mount on the starboard seat will do a whole lot, but it's worth a try, probably inside the starboard turtle. One thing we'd love to do is put a camera atop the mast. We've done some prototyping, but the challenge is battery life and starting the camera remotely. I think we'll probably try something at Eustis tho. We won't be at Tampa this year, so I'll be waiting for your results to see what we get. I do think you'll still have to do some alignment with audio, tho, but probably much less. Sometimes it takes me a while to find points where I can do alignment, and if all cameras start simultaneously, that'll be a huge help. I'm finalizing a video on our processing technique. We don't use DaVinci resolve (yet) because 1) we're not familiar with it; and 2) it's yet another learning curve. My bet is that the freeware version won't do auto-alignment, but the $300 version very well might. And since iMovie and Insta360 are fully available on any platform, that gives us a start to share with others. Clearly more to come -- for both of us!!!!
I have not raced a Flying Scot. I raced a J 24 for a while, and we always figured that if nobody sank from a too-aggressive crossing, we were not really trying hard enough. You seem like such gentlemen. 😲 And brothers getting along without bickering?? What's that all about?
We have our moments. That's why we have public domain looney tunes music available to us. 😜
Fun!! Well sailed. All you need is a pretty girl on board to drive your views up. As far as helping you, nothing at all. You did really well.
Thanks. Yes, a pretty girl in a bikini would go a long ways toward vewership increase, but my brother wouldn't like it because then he'd be off the boat! Thanks for the comment.
Does Buc-ees pay for the product placement?
Um, not that we know about...! We have no paid endorsements. :)
@ thank you for all of your videos! Enjoy watching and learning.
Great race guys - the margins are getting finer and finer. Won't be long now. Thanks as always for taking the time and effort to produce such high quality race coverage.
Wonderful. I’ve come across a couple of them in the last two weeks, but I wish more folks would make sailing vids-just like this one!- with minimal edits and no music. Just perfect. Thank you guys!
Thanks! We publish as many of our full races as we are able to record. Those full races are much like this one. We also publish a number of shorts with music or other exciting components. Our real reason for doing these is to improve our skills, and we also hope that our transparency makes others better, too! Appreciate your comment!

Yes! Brand new this morning
I need some royalties for that LOL

Nice to meet you guys at the Bourbon Cup! Great info on your channel. Keep up the great work
It was great seeing you guys at the Glow, Yes the shifts were friggin crazy the first day!
Still one of my top 3 favorite short videos of your channel and it sill brings tears to my eyes when I watch it!
Guys....9 tacks up wind!!! If would have tacked on that first header after the start it would have been 3 tacks to the top mark.
Fun class! Appreciate your efforts taking us along, great use of the 360 cameras!
Have a great regatta. Wishing the brothers who sail the best.
@@jamesjilek3946 Thanks Jim!
Really enjoyable race and great recovery. One minor suggestion - maybe leave the final result out of the video description - it's a bit of a spoiler 😉
Excellent point! Thanks for the suggestion!
Great start! Good eye to windward where you could tack onto port
Thanks. Still, our finish was horrible. Hope you are well Mark! Come to Kentucky Lake. :)
Wow, that was pretty shit! Starting in the wrong end and not able to come to the line in time or near the committee boat. And then ... "Starboard .. Starboard!" ... (other boat:) "I'm on starboard" .. "oh right.. My bad" ... Well absolute beginners here.. But, having fun..
Do you feel better now? More superior to others who have the courage to share (and not edit out) their learning journey? Note also that any mistakes were owned immediately. Will you be as ready to own your bullying comment?
@@fargarden I feel fantastic. Thanks for asking. 100% factual what I write, it is you who choose to be offended on their behalf. Feeling superior at racing? Hell yes, as I have raced all my life in several classes - some at world elite level. Feeling superior at anything else - nope, don't have the background to do that. There is no insult in labelling someone a beginner, if you are not aware of it - when they very clearly are. Its just racing, snowflake! Have a great day, and try not to get your knickers in a twist.
That right shift at the top of the last windward leg, and your gybe set to take the shift downwind on the last leg gained you 6 places! Good eyes!
@@plnwtn thanks. All weekend we took gybe sets to get away from the fleet. Sometimes they weren’t right, but this one was spot on.
17:33 is pretty fun!
😎
Yeah, confusion set in. Had I not gotten confused we probably would have placed better. More coffee, less beer.😅
Great video very helpful when you do not have a crane handy.
As a future Scot owner these types of videos are super helpful!
Hey Wendy, it's great to hear you'll be getting a Scot! Also, nice to see you at The Glow. Hope to see you again soon.
Love the music - haha
Sorry guys! My bad on that one for sure!
Got to see that whole thing unfold right in front of us. Those 2 boats were glued together for a while.😮
...and glue ain't fast! 😂
See you soon. I’ll be there around 3:00.
After the start, you guys are both sitting on the lee side of the boat, inducing more heel. Is this a low breeze technique to keep less of the boat wet and reduce drag? I was always told flatter is faster? Thanks for the videos.
Thanks for you comment and questions. In a typical wind you will maximize your speed at a 7 degree heal. In light winds, you need an even more dramatic heal to open up the leaches. The winning boats know these techniques, and they are specific to the Scot.
@@SailingWithMyBrother Time to order a Lev-o-gage… Thanks for the info. Love the channel and the videos.
We are not paid by any companies mentioned in this video...unfortunately! :)
Wow! Great video and break down of the event. How quickly things can happen!
This is an EXCELLENT instructional video. Thank you Kevin and Dorothy!!!
Boat was going really nicely - well done gentlemen. I've never sailed an FJ or even seen one race. I am curious, is it the norm to sail with so much heel - especially downwind? You also appeared to keep tension on the windward sheet whilst beating - is that deliberate or does it just happen?
This is an FS - Flying Scot. FJ is a Flying Junior. All good. Optimal heal is around 7 degrees. This maximizes the length of the boat to width, giving it a chance to go faster than flat. Flat is slow and the Flying Scot is a tricky boat to make it go fast. Depending upon the winds, we will have some slight tension on the windward jib sheet. In higher winds, there will be more tension.
@@kendallkunz7952 thank you for that informative reply (sorry to misidentify the class)!
@@brianlambert4685 No worries on FJ vs. FS. Where/what do you sail?
Great technique, beautiful boats!😊
Thanks! Get one, there are many across the price spectrum, and very fun!
Great race! Really high standard of presentation, course overview, start-time, on-board commentary and decision making processes.
Thanks for such a kind comment!😊
Awesome! And those outfits 😂🔥
Thanks 😆. We have fun with them. Follow us and yo'ull see all our different getups.
You guys need to move way forward in light air
Thanks @zelmer34234. We moved back because there were pretty solid rollers coming in from the direction of the wind. When we move forward, the boat stopped.
What’s the boat? Reminiscent of my Buccaneer 18 but definitely not that.
Flying Scot! :)
boring beyond belief
