Opeenhoping zwerfafval Prins Hendrikkanaal Katwijk
Op 4 juni 2021 zijn we met een klein kajakteam naar Katwijk gepeddeld om een hotspot van zwerfafval aan te pakken.

Grote hoeveelheden afval in de Leidse wateren gedurende de festiviteiten rond 3 oktober. De tienduizenden festivalbekers behoren dankzij een succesvol statiegeldsysteem inmiddels tot het verleden.

In Leiden wordt veelvuldig afval uit het water gevist met kano's. Op 6 oktober 2018 lag de focus op de ontelbare plastic wegwerpbekers, afkomstig van de festiviteiten rond 3 oktober. Inmiddels behoren dit soort beelden tot het verleden, want in 2019 zijn statiegeldbekers ingevoerd!

Jutters Katwijk bestaat uit vrijwilligers die twee keer per week het strand opgaan en grote hoeveelheden afval verwijderen.
How to separate nurdles from beach sand

Plastic pellets (nurdles) are easiest to separate from dry sand, but with a bit of effort wet sand is possible too. Use a sieve with a fine mesh which easily lets the sand through, but retains the nurdles.

Op 6 oktober troffen we vuilniszakken vol plastic festivalbekers aan in de mooie Leidse grachten. Maar dankzij het invoeren van een statiegeldsysteem behoren de beelden in deze video tot het verleden!

Good idea, but he can't do the whole beach. He needs one of those tractors that separates the nurdles and returns the sand..

Leakage during transport, mainly from ships...
Hard on the knees, just another million square metres to fix this beach! In the mean time they keep washing up! 😭

You need to get a company to make a machine that could easily drive along, pick up the top layer of sand, screen it and conveyor the nurdles into a hopper. I would talk with some of the large water bottle companies.
How did you build this sieve? I want to make one to help clean my beaches in Michigan
In fact it's just a fine mesh (like anti mosquito screen), supported by chicken wire. The one in de video is a bit different: a sheet of perforated aluminium. Very sturdy, but expensive. And the holes are too far apart and a bit too big.

What sieve size you are using?
Around a millimeter. Just big enough to let the sand through.
