Down The Rio Grande Day 1 of 6: Canoeing Talley to Cross Canyons
***A week long canoe trip down the Rio Grande through Big Bend National Park***
On August 27th of 2021 we would depart Birmingham, Alabama and drive 18 hours to the historic ghost town of Terlingua, Texas where we would check in with the outfitters at Far Flung Outdoor Center to obtain the necessary permits and guidance about the mighty Rio Grande. After months of planning & worrying about water levels, weather, and the unfamiliar terrain, our nerves were beginning to turn to excitement; there was no turning back now.
We would begin our journey by taking a 3 hour shuttle ride on bumpy unpaved desert roads to the rarely used Talley put-in. The roads to Talley are often washed out after rainfall, making the put-in inaccessible. We were very thankful to make it without any issues. Our plan for day one was to make it past the potential class 2/3 rapids nicknamed The Rock Pile and The Tight Squeeze in Mariscal Canyon and find a campsite at the Cross Canyons. Luckily, the low water levels made the rapids nothing more than a couple of shoals that were no problem at all. Stay tuned for days 2-7!

Father’s Day Overnight Canoe Trip (with my son Boone)

My son Boone and I went for a short Father’s Day paddle and camp on The Cahaba River in Alabama. Neither one of us caught any fish but we had fun trying.
7 Day Solo Canoe Trip On The Current River

In April of 2021 I decided to set out on a week long solo canoe trip in the Ozark mountains of Missouri on The Current River. I paddled 88 miles from Baptist to Big Spring. Along the way, I visited several springs that feed into the river, such as Welch Spring, Cave Spring, Pulltite Spring, Round Spring, Blue Spring, & Big Spring. The springs are so powerful that they make the river level float...

Overnight canoe trip on the Conecuh River in south Alabama. Only a few drone shots because it took a dip in the water and the lens got water in it. It has since dried out after keeping it in rice for a few days.
Canoe Trip Down The Cahaba River

On February 27th, Becca & I took our two dogs and two canoes on a canoe camping trip. We started on The Little Cahaba River and floated to its confluence with the main Cahaba River where we would camp. The water was higher than normal and it submerged our intended campsites so we had to settle for the only gravel bar we could find. Music is by Startle the Heavens (which I am the creator of).

I had to take advantage of this rare snow day in Alabama. I’ve only had my drone for 3 days and figured this would be good practice from the canoe. I’m using a DJI Mini 2. The music is my own and I go under the name Startle the Heavens.

In July of 2020 we drove from Birmingham, Alabama to Ely, Minnesota to do a 5 day canoe trip in the Boundary Waters. We started at entry point 14 (Little Indian Sioux River) and took out at entry point 16 (Moose River) via Little Indian Sioux River, Upper & Lower...

    • @ben2thewild
      @ben2thewild ปีที่แล้ว

      We didn’t have any issues with bugs except for in certain sections like a muddy creek bed that had a lot of brush around it. I can’t remember the CFS but it was a pretty normal level. I think they control it by a dam so it’s usually close to the same unless it’s there’s been a ton of rain. We did use a shuttle service but I can’t remember the name. They will definitely clue you in on if the water was too high or low. Thank you for watching and the comment!

      @ben2thewild 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I can't remember if we had to get a permit from the outfitter or not but if so, they are easy to get. It's not like the long waiting list of the Grand Canyon. No real rapids! Easy float.
