Kilcashel Stone Fort | Co. Mayo, Ireland #History
Kilcashel Stone Fort & double Court Cairn is a National Monument located in east Mayo.
Kilcashel is taken from an Anglicized version of Irish Coill na Chaisil i.e. ‘wood of the stone fort.’ Most significant discoveries were three stone forts or cashels that lay upon a sandstone ridge, just above a hundred metre contour line.
Two have been destroyed but remaining stone fort is a national monument. It measured thirty metres in diameter. It consisted of a single circular wall of five metres in thickness also three metres in height. Within the fort were two creep-ways in a circular wall of the fort that led to an internal wall-chamber. A formal entranceway with a lintel stone, four sets of V-shaped steps set into the stone.
Several interesting features at Kilcashel area include: An undated enclosure, (destroyed during twentieth century) a wall terrace, a Bronze Age fulacha fiadh, a bullaun stone, two early medieval souterrains, three early medieval cashels & two early medieval house sites. Nine archaeological sites are located within a one kilometre radius of Kilcashel & a further forty sites within a two metres radius. Kilcashel landscape project identified several other archaeological features.
Entrance to Kilcashel Fort was located to the east, it consisted of a trillian doorway with double lintels.
Cashel was too small to function as a royal site but may indeed have predated seventh century Crill Gabhlach Law Tracts.
It provided protection from winds for inhabitants. Two hilltop cashels were linked by a cave through a six hundred & twenty metres long tunnel.
Thank so much for watching! 🐾

Exploring the Irish Countryside | Caves of Keash | 1080p
มุมมอง 129วันที่ผ่านมา
Thank you for joining me on another adventure on January 1st in the Irish countryside. This time is the caves of Keash in Keshcoran Co. Sligo. A wonderful web of undermountain tunnels. Only about a 20 minute walk from the carpark but it does get a little bit steep about half way up. The views from the caves are amazing which I'm sure you'll agree with. Thanks so much for watching my exploits! M...

Lovely video.
Thanks Barbe!
I was there in 2006. The energy there is amazing ❤
It really is full of energy, I felt almost deflated when I arrived back home.
Love history, looks great David. Watch your footing in the snow, very slippery ❤
Cheers Erin 😆
When the Irish government stops its sick fetish with palestinians and hanas and hating jews, ill be back.
Nice one... I love the snow!
Me too, I am a big kid in the snow hehe
I love ittttt
Really Kyle? Thank you, should I make other videos like it?
The sound of dripping water throughout the caves makes them seem that little bit less homely. Thanks for the share. Happy New Year and best of luck with your endeavours.
The sheep dung even more so Robin. I hope you and the family have a wonderful new year too! 🙂
@ have been a bit deciduous this winter so far, but all is well.
Hello
Hi Derek
Beautiful fields.. Ooh wow, the old traditional round huts looks similar to African huts (kikuyu)ones
Amazing caves and views ❤
I love them both Erin, thankfully they're not too far away 😊
Very beautiful views... Nice video..
Thanks Anne, it looks a lot like Kenya 😀
You did a lot of things and been to a lot of places last year David. Memories and experiences, that’s what life is all about 👍
Spot on Erin, we're here for a good time not a along time 😎

Hello, beautiful video. Happy New year for you all the best 😊
Thanks Musa, same to you. Have a great 2025 💪☺️
Great to see the Bushcraft shelter held up against the storm. The days are getting longer now we are over the mid winter so I’m sure you will be spending the night soon ❤
It's in a very sheltered spot in the woods, so I'm very happy it's still intact. Yup, overnighter will be next 😋
Congratulations David
Thanks so much Anne, I'm really excited about it! 😊
That little shelter is coming along nicely. I’ll use it if every Gabi throws me out. 😂😂😂
Me too 😂😂
Merry Christmas!🎉
Merry Christmas to you too Kyle and a very happy new year! 🍻
Great stuff David, I can’t wait to see your woods 🌲🌿🌳🍁🍂🍃🪺🍄🌺

Many congrats to you! 🥂🎉
Thanks so much Kimberly, I'm over the moon! 😊
@@TheWanderingIrishmanOh, I bet. Looks very beautiful!
if you want a good saw like you were using. very similar, look into the store Lee Valley, I think it might be a Canadian store but in carpentry school we used a Japanese blade from a particular brand and it was golden.
Thanks for the tip Mr, I'll check it out 😊
Hello, Happy holidays for you 🌲🌲
Happy holidays to you too Musa 😊
Hello, good afternoon. Could you please tell me, what exact day was this video recorded? Thank you so much!
March this year, I think on the 12th.
@ thanks !!!
How tall are you sir
177cm
Very relaxing watching you build a shelter in the woods. This is a skill most people have lost because of modernity and convenience. Getting back to nature is the meaning of life ❤
Absolutely. I'll be doing a lot more of this soon when I get my woodlands 😊
I choose Quality of life over Lifestyle David, keep up the good work ❤
Hello, I understand your point of view. I prefer to live in the city, I have all this close to the city and North of Portugal is beautiful. Thank you for this Nice video 😊
I understand that Musa, most people will live in cities because that's what they are used to or they have family etc. I grew up in the city too and didn't realise my calling until I made the change, now I can't go back 😉😊
Merry Christmas to you Mr Irishman...
And many happy return to you and your family Anne, have a great Christmas 🎇╰(*°▽°*)╯
Hello very nice video, enjoy your day tomorrow.😊

Have a look at Collins McNicholas regarding online security jobs in Sligo
Thanks, I had someone from there get on to me already. Seems to be mostly Galway, Clare and Clifden jobs, but I'll keep searching.
Couldn't be property tax, just couldn't. FFS, you haven't bought it yet, are you being scammed or what! Jaysus, name and shame. It sounds more like you are being charged Residential Zoned land tax, which is different from LPT, RZT is charged at 3%. Have a look at Citizens information, I cannot see why you are liable at this stage, when you haven't bought it yet. It sounds just cray cray, are you sure of your info, perhaps it is an estimate of the tax you will be liable for should you go ahead with the sale. If the price is 50k for the land, it would be reasonable to expect a RZT of 1500. Perhaps your solicitor can make a case for you to be exempt is the land is not residential. You need to look into this more thoroughly.
I read it wrong haha thanks. It's stamp duty, a one off. This dream might come true yet. Fingers crossed!
Some of us are working more hours. Can’t watch live. 👍 Don’t forget to back up on other platforms.
No worries, I knew that. Thaks for watching afterwards and the comment. What platforms would you suggest?
Any other Americans here thinking about escaping the impending disasters? My drunk Irish grandfather is laughing at me from heaven.
haha I'm sure there are many more thinking the same.
Am going to live in Sligo when I retire in 2 years.. Am selling up in Dublin… Can’t wait🧐🇮🇪
You won't regret it Karyl, as long as you don't mind the rain. Best decision I ever made!
@ am counting the days,almost..love nature and wildlife.. have 4 hens too.. tks for replying
@karylhogan5758 if you're a nature lover, Sligo will be heaven for you. All the best with the move my friend 💪
This looks beautiful!
Thanks Sophia, it really is.
I'm in the Potomac Highlands of WV and an acquaintance from Ireland says it looks like Northern Ireland here.
I'm gonna have to check that out Hanz, Appalachian Trail, right?
@TheWanderingIrishman Not quite. Only a small part of the AT goes through the far east of WV. Green Bank Observatory aka the dead zone is where I'm referencing.
I'll check it for sure, sounds interesting. Thanks Hanz 🙂
I grew up in NY, had the city experience. It was friendly, believe it or not. Lots of parties no matter how small your apartment was. Now in Seattle, splitting time between here and the rural mountains on the eastern side of the state. People are courteous in small towns and countryside- even on the roads because you are likely to know them or someone they know. You can tell the city people visiting because they are rude on the road, cutting you off, flashing their lights, etc. I prefer the countryside as long as I have the company of good books. I can have long slow intuitive creative thinking time. Less distraction. I’ve spent 3 months on a mountain alone- with dogs and horses. You get to see the world in a different way. I’m still trying to find land of my own. Maybe an island off the west coast of Ireland. 😂
You really do see the world in a different way. I now prefer the woods to a beach any day. Peace and tranquility trumps any other environment. I never thought I would fall in love with the countryside so much, but here we are. Unfortunately not many horses where I live but lots of cows and sheep. Books are an essential part of country living. I'm buying some land here and hope to have it soon, you're more than welcome to visit :)
Any deer on your walks? Thankfully, they have rebounded in Ireland over the past 40 years, mostly due to Forrest plantations. They must be in the Ox hills? Enjoyed your walk along.
Funny you should mention that Gerry. I was walking in the woods some time last year and heard a dog attack something. I caught up and seen it was a young fawn. I managed to save it's life and get rid of the dog thankfully. Such a beautiful animal.
What a lovely smile! It's great living out in the countryside, I don't miss towns/built up areas one bit! Love your views, makes me want to get out & walk & breath in the fresher air! 👍
There's really a lot to be said for it, I love it here so much. Thanks for watching my friend and the lovely compliment :)
No Ipas centers near you, I presume??
Not yet haha
