I’d avoid holding them like that. Your oils on the pads of your fingers will remove the scales. I’d use the sides of your fingers instead
I can't decide if I need elastic or not. What do you recommend?
What I’m having an issue with is once they pea in the belly band I can’t just place it in the laundry bin because it was start to smell up our entire laundry room like urine. I even tried rinsing them out as soon as their soiled with my washing machine prior to leaving them inside the washing machine until I can get a full load of wash but that still makes the laundry room stink like urine. Can anyone suggest what they do to keep the smell contained? I don’t want to run the washing machine for just one belly band when it gets soiled and I definitely don’t want to hand wash them as much as they wear them. There’s got to be a good system that works for these. I’m new to this whole belly band thing so any suggestions would greatly be appreciated.
wondering about the waterproof fabric you use.
Is it better to trim the hair back around that area or does it protect the skin? My baby boy is 15 and a small yorkie who marks all the time. He is starting to have so health issues so we have gone to belly bands. We got him a wiper warmer and some salve . But he's still sensitive . I used to use Poise pads. My daughter pointed out that I’m paying the “pink” tax and that the Depends Men’s Guards pads are just as effective and you get more pads per pack and at a lesser price. It’s saved me a ton of money.I’ve been wrapping my pooch for 8 years. He’s 100% incontinent.
Great tip. Where has been the best price you've found? Prevail use to be so much cheaper than Poise, but now the best price is usually Poise from Amazon or a store brand. When I priced checked last, the Depends Male Guards were about the same as Poise. Walmart has the depends guards on sale right now and they are a few cents cheaper. Male Guards are .26 cents vs Level 5 Poise are .28. Amazon has the guards for .26 if you get the larger pack and you can subscribe and save for 15% more off as well.
Those pads are overkill unless it’s a huge dog. You could use a much smaller poise pad
Hi Tami. I definitely encourage some testing to find the right pad for your dog. I've fostered mostly pomeranians (30 of them now), they are small dogs in the 8-12 lb range and I prefer a level 5 pad. You can sometimes use a level 3-4 poise pad for these smaller dogs, but I like level 5 for the extra width it has vs the smaller pads. I use to use level 4, but they changed the design to a slimmer one, so while the absorption was good, the band sometimes go dirty quicker than I'd like. Some people can even use a maxi pad and Stayfree now has "multi-fluid absorption" pads. Chi's and the tiniest dogs can often use a smaller pad, but a level 4-5 is where most people should start. It's really about the amount of fluid your dog is eliminating at a time and how frequently you change the pad. If you are having leaks, just try a higher level pad and more frequent changes. If you have a medium or large dog, start with a level 5 and move up. You can certainly cut the pad in half to save some money.

A belly band will not stay on my short haired dog. He always manages to wriggle it off. Any suggestions? (I put it in fairly tight so that’s not it.)

Where should the elastic be-around the legs or just around where the pad goes?
Or all the way around waist and back side (both edges all the way around!)
My elastic is about half of the band and is closer to the center and not on the ends (where the Velcro pieces are), varies a bit by size. You can see examples of elastic bands in my shop. Please message me there if you have anymore questions. Thanks!!
Ha ha ha My one dog figured out how to get them off. He backs his butt up under our lounge chair then hikes his butt up and walks away which pulls the diaper off. He is one smart dog! My other two keep theirs on.
