I have always considered Beethoven's 16 String Quartets as his "Lost Symphonies" - The quartet is the distillation of an entire orchestra down to its bare minimum (except of course for the trio) - Moreover, the symphony and the quartet share the same form of 4 movements - This performance by the Ariel Quartet is the best I have heard!

I’m always amazed at all the directions LVB found to explore starting from a few simple phrases that interested him, such as the opening notes that are essentially the fugue motif from both opus 131 and opus 133. Just a fragment and he opens up worlds within worlds from it, never exhausting the possibilities.

The audience rating of performances of Beethven‘s music is immeasurableand off the charts becouse these performances are comfortable and graceful and moved and beautiful and skilful

The musicianship is a given, the accuracy is astonishing!

Morning Pro Musica, broadcast out of Boston, broadcast this one morning while I drove to work. I had to hunt down the CD, a box set. None disappointing. The late quartets. The guy was deaf while writing this. Doing it from memory of what sounds work together. Amazing.

If I'm assuming correctly Beethoven wrote his late compositions in the state of deafness. The music here is loaded with dense energetic fiber. Maybe the inner ear was vibrating this sort of fusion dissonance and irregular modulatory exchange in phrasing. However it goes : and rightly beyond my conjecture, opus 132 is as robust as a giant oak

Man hört Beethovens Wut, Ohnmacht, Zerknirschtheit dieser Jahre (erfolglose ernstgemeinte Liebschaft, Napoleon wütet, der Kaiser getürmt). Dieses Quartett tut weh, bereitet Schmerzen, der 2. Satz depressiv, ich frage: was ist am 3. Satz seriös? überzogene Skalen im 4. Satz - kein Hinsetzen und genießen. Müsste ich derzeit etwas komponieren, würde es wohl ähnlich klingen. Bravo Ariel Quartett, all dieses bravourös zum Klingen gebracht.

A good quarter. They still need to reach "consensus" as to be able to play four different voices having an equally important conversation. First violin sometimes wants to play louder than the other members. I think the cellist is the one who exhibits the best musicianship. I have no doubt they have the potential to become a great quarter-- something close to lets say the Guarneri String Quartet?

The opus 135 quartet was a set work when I did A level music in 1987. I used to know it inside out, upside down & backwards lol. It's years since I listened to it, but it all came rushing back very quickly. It's magnificent.

One of the members of my string quartet described the Vivace movement as "unsafe at any speed" because of the crazy syncopation and other "simple" (crazy hard) rhythmic issues.

i cried the fiest time listenting to the third movement，the alban berg quartet live 1989 version
